I realize that every city has its own thrift/vintage culture and it's hard to find a market where you find that perfect combination of affordable + chic + a bargain. The difference between affordable and a bargain meaning that you're selling clothes at an affordable price (let's say a woman's sweater for 10 euros) and also at a comparative bargain considering the original value (so, not an H&M sweater for 10 euros). The selection here was more "vintage" (old) than thrift (inexpensive), and generally overpriced by my standards. The jewelry was housed across the street, and that selection was small. Encountered a much better vintage option further north in the city.

Jamie W and I have been to the smaller Time Out Markets in NYC (Union Square and DUMBO), but we could never find our footing in these places. This one has the distinction of being the original Time Out Market, so it's had over a dozen years since its opening in 2014 to develop its cred with dilettante foodies and insufferable vloggers. At the same time, the rigid conformity of the food vendors to the Time Out brand makes this place feel far removed from the family-run businesses where you can get a more authentic ambiance and for the most part, cheaper prices. Paying the equivalent of $8 for an overdecorated donut may produce momentary Instagram gratification but little else (Photo 8). That's not to say the layout here isn't well organized, but basically you're relegated to long communal tables where your movements are restricted. Being elbows-to-elbow with famished, arm-waving tourists is not ideal. We were even here during off-peak hours, so I'm presuming it becomes more chaotic and cacophonous during lunch and dinner rushes, especially with the reverberations created from the high ceilings (Photo 9). With dozens upon dozens of food choices, this place is ideal for large groups who have no interest in exploring their own dining options, the ones who are perfectly satisfied with hanging out in food courts in shopping malls. The lady was sorta rude with another customer, and the guy that helped me got all offended because I called this wacky cocktail ring "costume" jewelry, since it is sterling. Yeah, but it still isn't fine jewelry with gem stones, easy killer. You certainly may find a unique Portuguese piece here, but be prepared to deal with attitude.

The store is on a beautiful classic cobblestone road in Lisbon on a row of other vintage stores. I loved their curated selection and ended up buying two pairs of Levi's shorts (medium and light wash) and a beautiful winter plaid trench coat. They also take credit card! We loved this flea market and spent a good amount of time walking around here. Several locals told…read moreus about it and I was thrilled that we were here on a Saturday and could go. There were tons and tons of vendors with all sorts of things at great prices for several city blocks with roads blocked off for pedestrians making it easy to shop. There was a nice mix of antiques and ceramics and old and new. I got a few small keepsakes as well as some totes and clothing for my daughter at fair prices. Definitely worth the visit. Plus, we walked through the charming Alfama and did additional shopping and snacking along the way. Several really cute breakfast spots can be found here.
