My Mom has been a frequent customer to Luurs over the past several years and it has been a pleasant experience overall. Unfortunately, during our visit last week we experienced an extremely rude cashier. After the gentleman wrote down our inventory, we took the paper to the cashier. Instead of greeting us, she proceeds to snatch the paper out of my Mother's hand and begins to ring up the order. She doesn't say "Hi" or "Welcome to Luurs", nothing. I did notice after we left she greeted the next customer. Having said that, I don't know why she was so rude to us. The other workers were friendly. However, this employee needs to be trained on how to conduct good customer service to ALL patrons if she will be front facing to customers. read more

I went to a certain very popular home improvement store with large orange letters and they actually had rows tomato plants, pothos (houseplant), marigolds and a ninebark shrub on the same shelf labeled "Perennials". SMH. That would NEVER happen at Luur's. Everyone working there is an actual horticulture worker. Their healthy and attractive native plant selection is unmatched. They're pricey, but you are getting good, unique plants that took years to grow, and it shows in the quality of what you'll put in your garden. read more

Wow. Went in for a couple quick outdoor plants. As a small business owner, I would never want to make my customer feel the way I felt walking into this store today. I wanted to support small business but ended up feeling they didn't value their customers. I questioned myself when entering if they even owned the place bc their faces were of complete disgust when I showed up 4 mins to close. Not the cheapest place but its one stop shopping for gardeners. As far as their warranty-I think all landscaping places offering warranty's-are stupid. B/c there are far too many variables to determine the true cause of Bush, Fir/Evergreen failures. Evergreens don't like wet conditions-they are finicky and especially vulnerable the first year. You gotta watch them carefully. If they make it past the first year you have a much better chance. read more

Bought a few trees from here. They died within 5 months of buying. Their policy is to give you 1/2 money back if it's within 6 months (and they did come through on that). But I also paid for delivery, bag of fertilizer, etc. They weren't budging on giving anything else. Only 1/2 my money back. The trees they sold me were clearly bad (and they don't have any others in stock now "because they were all dying anyway" according to the employee I talked to, but their policy is what it is, I suppose. Buyer beware. You're much better off going to Schwarz's nursery in Addison. They have a 2 year guarantee and they'll give you 100% of your money back, not half. I'll be going to Schwarzs for everything from now on. read more

Luurs Garden Center - Flowers & Gifts Near Me - Hillside, Illinois

Word on the street is if you're looking for a garden shop in Elmhurst, you need to hit up Luurs. Now technically, Luurs is located in Hillside, but the people of Elmhurst have accepted it into their fold, so you know it's golden. Plus, all their signs are designed to look like Elmhurst, and really that's what counts, right? I'm kidding. Luurs is a lovely garden center, with magnificent blooming florals in all shapes, sizes and colors. With trickling fountains, garden accessories and everything you need to make your yard go from drab to fab. I just finished a massive landscape project and was really tempted by some hydrangeas that would look pretty spectacular in our front yard, but I've promised my wife and the gaping hole in our bank account that I would lay off the home improvement projects for at least the rest of the summer. Fine. But next year? Oh man. Luurs is gonna get to know my credit card number, lemme tellya. They also have a nifty gift shop filled with artwork, greeting cards and small gifts for every garden lover on your list. Not to mention the fact that the two folks I spoke with were super friendly and helpful. Oh! Speaking of helpful? Check out the signs on each of the plants. They tell you exactly what you need to know about planting the..uh... plants. Like, did you know some plants need a certain amount of sunlight? The signs tell you this, so if you're a dummy like me, you don't plant something that requires sun in your shade garden. Told you I'm a newb. read more

The selection at Luurs can't be beat. It is overwhelming for a novice like me but a nice gentlemen walked me through the various plants and made some very helpful recommendations. They do guarantee a lot of their plants for one year so I felt more comfortable purchasing there. The prices are not cheap but I think the quality, selection and guarantee makes it worth it. read more

Chocolate Mint plant??? Oh yeah, it's an herb! I ate it! I drive by this place AT LEAST 3 times a week and have never stopped...UNTIL TODAY! I wanted to get a Mother's Day plant instead of the normal dying bouquet and a friend suggested I come with her to Luurs since she was going there to buy some plants for the garden. Seriously, you pull up and it's flowers as far as the eye can see! And you don't have to have a green thumb to know what you're doing. I don't even have a garden (kill most plants anyways) and I was throwing plants in our wheel barrow left and right! Everything is so beautiful. So much in fact that we ended up there for like 2 hours and now I'm growing Basil and Yellow Tomatoes on my apartment patio! Now, since I'm slightly an organic foodie I found myself wandering through the herbs and veggies and trying to decide what to grow. There is staff all over the place to let you know what will grow best where you're going to plant them. Talk about organic, you can find everything you need to start a massive veggie garden - ready to go now or (if you need cheaper) in 30-60 days. On the note of cheap - HOLY CHEAP. Most of the herbs and veggie plants are $1.99!! You can always get a larger size ready to bloom but the price jumps a little - and the cheaper the better! This summer I'm growing a garden! This place is breathtaking. I was attempting to find potato bulbs to plant and attempting here. I pulled up in the parking lot next to it and after exiting my car I was struck still by how beautiful the place is. Rows and rows of flowers lined the parking lot leading up to the brick walk, hanging plants in vibrate purple and green gently blowing in the breeze, the sounds of a water fountain bubbling in the background along with the whispering of trees overhead. A well kept house sits atop the hill at the center of all these beautiful flowers. The staff was very helpful and although they didn't carry what I was looking for they referred me to a location that would. If I thought they'd let me, I'd bring a book and sit and read. read more

A beautiful garden center. I just went today to get some Mums for the fall. Everything is still looking beautiful even at the end of the season. On tip of the great plants, I spent quite a bit of time just looking around because they had some beautiful outdoor pieces and holiday pieces. Sure...As some have suggested, it is a little pricey and you can get flowers a whole lot cheaper at Home Depot. But you get what you pay for. The hanging baskets are worth every penny, and you're not going to find this quality at a hardware store. If you know what you're buying, this shop should be a destination. read more

What I like about this garden shop is the convenience. Since I normally drive all the way out to Naperville, this shop is about 1/2 the distance. They have a large quantity of the usual suspects. Geraniums, pansies, impatiences, etc.. My husband and I came out here on the weekend before Mother's day to get some stuff for my garden. They had a decent selection of tomatoes, peppers and herbs. The prices were decent as well. Great place to come for some of the good old standbys. However, if you are looking for something unusual, you might not be able to get it here. read more

This place is great. You get exactly what you pay for-these aren't the sub-par plants and trees you find at Home Depot. My husband and I aren't the most knowledgeable about flowers, trees and shrubs and the staff has always been very helpful in guiding us towards the right purchases for our needs. Just know how much sun an area gets and an idea of what you're looking for and the staff will present all the options that will work for what you have in mind. They'll load up your purchases and do all the heavy lifting so your experience will be a breeze. The hardest part is making decisions because they have quite the variety of flowers, shrubs and trees...and a vegetable section. read more

They are not the friendliest people, especially if you have to return something. They are rude and look for every excuse not to give a refund. They don't tell you their return policy, but staple it to your receipt. If you knew what it was ahead of time you would not make the purchase. This is probably why they don't say anything. I would NEVER shop at this place again. After finally getting my refund for the shrub I returned I left there fighting mad for the way they treated me. They are greedy, and uncaring to their customers. Plants aren't all that healthy either. Vern Goers is a much better choice to do your shopping. I purchased 2 bushes and a tree from Luurs on 05/29/2018. By June they were showing signs of distress to which I was told that it may just be "shock" to watch them closely. Well by August 01, the bushes were completely brown (dead). Spoke with a lady there who said she was sure they would just replace them since it had been less than 2 months for 2@89.95 each. My landscaper and I took them in on 08/19/2018 and the Owner, who was extremely rude, just said " Give her half off new ones without even looking at me or the bushes . I will Never shop there again and I would certainly recommend anyone else to Look for a better nursery that will at least stand behind their products that have died in such a short time. The roots never took. Keep searching, there is a great place in Addison and Desplaines. Better service as well!! read more

Not sure what the fuss is about - I made a special trip out there to get plants, and left without any. I was the only customer (maybe that should have been a clue?) but each person I asked for help with shade plants just pointed me to the hostas. I wandered around on my own, and did find a number of shade tolerant plants that seemed healthy enough (for July), but they did not have anything that I have not seen at other nurseries, or at Home Depot (and for a lot less $). The last straw was dealing with checking out - the cashier was obviously having a bad day. I finally left everything and simply went to another nursery. We have been purchasing plants and flowers from Luurs since 1995 and will continue forever. They sell great plants and their service is terrific too. Over the years, I've gotten to know the owners, Jim and Carol and we have become friends. Patrick, their son, and the entire staff are knowledgeable and friendly, too. The owner is totally rude and customer service is terrible if you have an issue that in the least way inconveniences them. I've spent thousands of dollars here in the past few years and they wouldn't exchange three dead plants that I didn't notice amongst the several hundred that I bought. I was just trying to avoid buying a whole six pack since I only needed a couple. Instead, they were completely rude and after telling my wife I could come get a couple replacement plants I was instead chastised by the overly angry owner who proceeded to tell me he had sold thousands of flats and no one had ever had a problem before. I would have been happy to buy a replacement if they had just told me they didn't do exchanges. Instead they told me I could exchange a couple plants and then changed their mind when I drove all the way over. Won't be shopping there again. Check out The Growing Place in Wheaton or wannamaker's in Downers Grove, both places staffed by much more pleasant and helpful people. read more
