Over the past decade, I've graciously bled pools of sweat in gyms all over this metro, from CrossFit barns to bootcamp-style conditioning, most recently completing about 18 months at Orangetheory, where I sustained several minor and debilitating injuries. I gave it my all, spent a pretty penny on physical therapy, and finally decided to ditch the treadmill for spin classes. But Spenga's much more than a spin scene. You do 20 minutes on a bike, 20 more on the floor (free weights, kettlebell, TRX, BOSU), and 20 minutes of yoga. Originally, I definitely had reservations, but now that I'm about two months in, I can emphatically state the following: * I burn 700-900 calories per class * The yoga is super good for me * The music's pretty good (better than OTF) * It's more affordable than OTF * The instructors are polished and personable * The facility is spacious and clean * I'm injury free From a community standpoint, this place is more of a drop-in-get-it-done-and-leave kinda situation, which is great with me, but if you're more motivated by a gym full of besties, look elsewhere. I'll note they could get better at correcting form, and I would appreciate more class options, but I've never lost a penny from a late cancellation (there's no need to reserve ahead of time) and I could be wrong, but I think I'm actually seeing the results of these workouts. So far...so good…read more I'm sure my scoring of this place will change as time goes on and I see the results with my kids. I asked...no hounded...my children's father to get them enrolled in Jiu Jitsu because my daughter was in it before and she loved it. This is the place he chose. First and foremost...Chaz is AWESOME. He helped me when I was struggling to learn the ropes from belt tying to what was up with the student cards. He's the best. Professor Wes, I think it is, is great as well. He's really good with the kids. He's firm but knows how to laugh with them as well when it's appropriate. He seems very kind and patient. He takes time with the parents as well which is important to me. The issues I have are that I've watched the kids sparring and although Professor Wes is in there, he can only watch so many at a time. It looks like there might be junior instructors in the classes as well so I think they help but I see these kids rolling without a lot of correction. I'm just wondering how they learn. I'm guessing that will come in time which is why I'm determined to get my kids there at least three times per week. I hate to sound like a skeptic because I'm not. I have watched this sport for years and love it. I hounded the children's father forever to do this so I am definitely a fan. Gracie Jiu Jitsu is world renowned so I'm expecting to see great results. I want to see my children grow, become more disciplined, more self aware but mostly, gain self esteem. Time will tell. The parking lot is weird. I feel like I'm going to get in an accident when I pull in but so far I haven't. I wish there wasn't a wall so I could see the kids better from the waiting area but whatever. We aren't supposed to interfere anyway. All in all, I have high hopes and I'm confident Gracie Barra Brazilian Jiu Jitsu will deliver.

CrossFit is all about community and the community here is absolutely incredible…read more I dropped in to 9am on a Monday. My Lyft driver dropped me off at the front entrance. The entrance is towards the back of the building and I was a little confused but then saw people walking that direction, so it all made sense. I was greeted right away by members. First up were heavy back squats and I was immediately approached by a member asking if I wanted to share a rack with her. That made me feel so at ease since there aren't a lot of racks. She was so friendly! The coaching was on point and the energy levels were high. When I was walking out, I had two different members ask me if I needed a ride anywhere. How awesome is that?! Anyway, this place has a super friendly vibe and an amazing community. I'm so happy to have dropped in here and will definitely be back the next time I'm in town. I love seeing crossfit communities thrive like this post pandemic. It's so heartwarming.

The class was also super warm and inviting and the coach led us through a great warmup. The class I attended was very barbell heavy and seemed to have a strong focus on strength which was fantastic for me. The facility itself was very clean, setup for efficiency, and had several restrooms and an area to stash your gear. There seems to be a strong sense of community here and would highly recommend coming here if you're just visiting or looking for a way to take fitness to the next level!

What I love about Ninja Core, is the access the kids have to all of the equipment in the gym, and how passionate the coaches are about keeping the kids challenged. My kids participate in the Competitive classes, and attend several of the other classes throughout the week, including parkour, and they absolutely love it. It's helping them develop the skills, attitude and team building for competitions at a national level, while also helping them build strength, agility, coordination, and overcoming their fears and boundaries. The staff is exceptional, I couldn't have asked for a better mentor/leader/coach, and I look forward to making this our permanent ninja family for years to come!

I had reached out to see if I could do a drop-in and was told that I'd be welcome. Impact's motto is 'Good People. Good Jiu-Jitsu,' and after having visited I wholeheartedly think they live up to it. Rob was teaching the class that evening which seemed to be a mix of experienced and some more experienced beginners and some folks who were had started more recently. He broke down the moves and techniques down enough to be well understood by all levels but still let a lot of time to get a lot of reps in. The evening I stopped in was a nogi class, which is a style I generally avoid because it's a lot of wear and tear on the body. I didn't feel as beat up as I thought I would be, not to say that it wasn't the fast paced game that nogi typically is. What's more there was a focus on stand up that most schools usually avoid. I'd definitely go back to ABQ for another drop in and if I ever end up in ABQ on a more permanent basis Impact would be the place to train.

They scale workouts for each individual based on their current level of fitness and their ultimate goals. Cons: *grab your popcorn* -The first turn off was signing up for a trial class- at 5 am, and being told when I got there my spot was taken by paying members. -The second was walking into the gym and after doing body scans (InBody) they show you a picture of womens' midsections and body fat and ask you "which do you want your body to look like?" This was SUCH a turn off for me but for some reason I decided to give it a chance. I understand a metric is needed and this may work for a lot of people, seems like it does, but it was just so ick to me as well as unrealistic. -Turns out this is one of those money maker gyms that talks in circles and confuses you to make you think you are signing up for the 6 week program they say they are putting you on, only for me to attempt to cancel within the 15 days request period and learn the contract I signed was apparently for a 12 months! READ THE FINE PRINT AND GET A COPY OF YOUR CONTRACT!! I feel like this whole situation was crafted in a distinct way to no allow you to understand fully, to sign, and to not give you a copy of your contract but think you got away with a good deal/membership. -The gym was unfriendly and unwelcoming. They have a good facade going making it seem like they are into building community. They have group hikes, bike rides and spirit days, but when it came to time inside the gym my experience was that no one cared if I was there or not. I don't need to be best friends with everyone or anyone for that matter, but especially when working out before the crack of dawn a "Hi" or 'Hello" goes a long way. That's a big factor in wanting to come back to a gym, especially a small one like this. This is not your big box gym after all. At minimum the coaches should offer a greeting. The group I trained with was very clicky. I will say the afternoon groups seemed to be more welcoming. After making my feelings on the matter known to the gym owner it seemed there had been a coaches meeting or something because I got more "Hi's" and "How are you's?" from the staff in my last week there then in my previous 5 weeks combined. -The 6 week program: overall fine, but be wary of the nutrition program. I feel like it was portrayed as they would give you meal plans and/or outlines and what to eat. They give you a list of foods to eat and everyone gets the same foods and eats the same amount. That's the plan. -When you sign up for strength classes you are allotted a time slot which is yours for the day and time you sign up for each week. Fine. What is annoying is that if you can't make that time they don't have an app where you can change your time to or a mindbody type thing where you can swap. You text the coaches to see if there is room in the class you want to be in. This is SUPER ANNOYING because most of the time I don't' know who is coaching what class so then they are texting each other to see if it's ok OR they just say "I'm sure it'll be fine" Which would maybe be fine if I didn't get booted out of my first attempt at class and I'm not trying to wake up and be at the gym at 5am to not get to do the workout I signed up for or was told it would be fine to to come to! Pros: -Clean facility -Good equipment -Workouts were nice Overall I would not recommend. I think they are in it for the money and while we were able to come to a "compromise" for the agreement I signed there were so many red flags I should've listened to. I chose Brickz because when I searched it was one of the only gyms I found with small group training. JUST BE CAREFUL, MAKE SURE YOU READ EVERYTHING AND THOROUGHLY UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU ARE SIGNING UP FOR BEFORE YOU DO, AS WELL AS FEEL COMFORTABLE. Hopefully some of my frustrations will allow them to change some of their business practices.
