The Mocha Me Crazy was delicious and I really enjoyed it, though $7 felt a bit expensive for a drink. Unfortunately, the customer service overshadowed the experience. I waited in the wrong line, and instead of politely letting me know, the cashier was rude and continued making unnecessary comments about how I should have ordered. She also made rude remarks to a coworker that I could clearly hear and spoke rudely to my friend when they asked where the straws were. The sandwich was huge for $13 but so dry. It's like a knockoff subway but subway is MUCH better. Everything was fresh but I don't think the bread was because it was so hard to bite into. I split this with my friend because of how big it was. Didn't feel full despite the size because it's like almost all just bread they are very skimpy with putting stuff in. I haven't eaten there in a few years, and I remember the sandwiches being so delicious! I decided to eat there today because all the other food on the Stanford Campus is expensive and just, bad... I forgot what a hole in the wall this place is. It is incredibly small space wise. I was there about 11:45 and fortunately there was no line. They have a great selection of sandwiches! I think there might be pizza too, but if so, it was not apparent. They have a very small selection of chips/snacks and bottled/canned drinks. The service is a little off. The people at the counter are clearly not experienced sandwich makers. I was the only person in the store, yet it took almost 5 minutes for 2 people to make a veggie sandwich. Lots of chatter between them and the person at the register. Glad you enjoy your job. The most disappointing part was the actual sandwich. It was SO small!! $12.50 and it was smaller than my hand. The ingredients, the few that were on the there, were fresh and seemed like good quality. But honestly, it was mostly shredded lettuce. They mound everything into the center of the bread so that if you bite from the middle, it tastes like you got all of the toppings. Then on subsequent bites, you realize that it is all lettuce. I took apart the other half of the sandwich and what I found was 2 tiny pieces of black olive, 1 slice of pepperoncini (not one pepperoncini, one SLICE of pepperoncini), 3 pieces of chopped tomato, 2 slivers of red onion, maybe a teaspoon of sprouts, half a piece of avocado and NO pickle... I can get a better, heartier and more satisfying sandwich at Togo's or even Subway!! That says a great deal about this place. read more

11/5/20- Small sandwich deli located on the medical campus of Stanford. Nice, quiet place to have a lunch break, especially if you're a student rushing to and from classes/labs! -Lox sandwich on Dutch Crunch bread- Included salmon, lettuce, tomato, onion, bell pepper, olives, pickles, and pepperoncini. The sandwich was also supposed to come with mayo but I definitely got cream cheese in mine. Not sure if someone got the two mixed up or if they ran out of mayo. Overall, the flavor of the sandwich wasn't bad but I was disappointed with how it was made. All of my salmon was smashed into the middle section and the 1/3 ends of my sandwich was just bread and lettuce. The sandwich was also very messy to eat with ingredients fall out or moving around with each bite. The Dutch Crunch bread also had no "crunch"...wish they would toast their subs! I heard that for their hot sandwiches, only the meat is toasted but not the bread. Would have loved a crispy, crackly exterior to my sandwich! -Cafe experience and ambience- Ordering was very simple and fast. They also serve coffee, smoothies, chips, etc. My sandwich came out within a couple of minutes. I also love the vibe of CSSR cafe in general. There's lots of glass and the architecture at Stanford has a very modern design. If not for COVID, I would be camped out in this area much more often. There's quite a few tables set up so it's a great place to rest. -Price/value- My lox sandwich was about $9-10, which is the price of most sandwiches here. Not too bad of a price for a slightly above-average sandwich but wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. SO ill be honest as evidenced by my checkins Nexus is my go to here but there are times,and times being the key factor, that the CCSR Cafe hits the spot. As work dictates sometimes I cannot meet the hard 230 pm cutoff at Nexus. Other times you just need a great deli sandwich and this is a great place to get one. First off the lines can be horrendous during peak hours. That being said the service is quick and friendly. I also really appreciate that the person handling the money is NOT the person making at sandwich. Its a heck of sandwich as well. As always my Mendoza Line sammy is a Roast Beef with Swiss cheese. Its a basic order, its impossible to hide crappy ingredients and it lets face it very very tasty. The Roast beef is perfectly pink and tasty. The ingredients like the sprouts, onions, lettuce and tomato are fresh. The mustard and mayo are nothing special but deftly applied in perfect amounts. The dutch crunch is not quite up to Ike's standards but its a close second. It is a sandwich at its best. Simple but well executed They actually quite an extensive collection of chips, as well as the usually suspects in terms of beverages. As a plus they recently updated the outside furniture/tables and it no longer looks like a tetanus shot waiting to happen. read more

Everyone knows I am a sucker for a sammich. And when you are on the road sometimes you just want something simple...like...oh...I don't know...2 pieces of unbuttered and toasted sourdough, a grilled chicken breast, a little mustard, and some dill pickles. A simple lunch was craved and received. The ladies taking my order were very nice and very fast at making the sammich. At $9 it is a little pricy, but it is exactly what I wanted. No sodium, fat, grease, or clarified butter overload here. Just a good lil sammich. Next time I am at Stanford, I would put money on me eating here again. For the decent campus fares, speed, smiles, and simple food, sometimes the comforting things are the best. 4 stars. read more

I never thought I would be singing the praises of an on campus eatery. Everyone knows that on campus eateries should be disgusting. Not so with CCSR cafe. This place has a line out the door every day at Noon and for good reason. Their sandwiches are delicious, huge and have this amazing fresh baked bread. Sourdough roll, FTW! Giving it 3 stars because most of the staff there are very sweet. Food is ok but kind of pricey for what they serve you. Vibe is chill, I love eating here on a sunny day because it's laid back and quiet. Been here plenty of times but the last 3 times I've run into the same staff member who had rubbed me the wrong way. First time she let her boyfriend or husband jump me in line because he had to go back to work. I work also and only have 30 mins. Second time I saw her have a running nose, might be allergies or a cold who knows but she kept rubbing her nose with the gloves she was making my sandwich . This last time she let someone else cut in front of me to pay even though I already had my sandwich and chips in hand ready to pay. I'm in loooove with their mushroom soup (and apparently so is everyone else since I stopped by around 3pm and it was all gone)!! It contains a variety of mushrooms in their delicious chicken bouillon, it's very filling and about $3 for the small sized container. I also occasionally get their breakfast egg sandwich ($5 and available all day!) with pepper jack cheese and ham/bacon on an asiago bagel. They will automatically toast the bagel for you and it comes with 2 egg patties and 2 layers of ham/bacon. Pass on the mayo and butter, it's already artery clogging enough. They also have a bbq every Tuesday and Thursday during the summer, it's cash only and be prepared to wait at least 10 minutes. Your purchase includes a bag of chips; soda can be bought for an extra dollar. After purchasing your food at the tent, go inside CCSR Lutticken's cafe to find your burger condiments and toppings! Sandwiches are huge and they have a great selection to choose from as well as awesome toppings. This used to be my favorite sandwich on campus, until Ike's came along. I've tried a few of their cold sandwiches, but I always come back to the veggie meatball on dutch crunch. I really like how it's warm and had lots of tomato sauce oozing out of it. It's a really massive sandwhich too, which is great because I can save half of it for later. read more

Since I eat here at least once a week I figured I should write a review. I'm going to give Lutticken's 4 stars (slightly generous...feeling nice today) because they are always there for me when I'm starving and they make big ass sandwiches that I can eat for lunch and dinner (granted the bread doesn't get soggy). My favorite is the Italian sub on the usual menu but lately I've realized that the specials on the window are the best sandwiches. I had an awesome bruschetta sandwich the other day with chicken, tomatoes marinated in whatever sauce you use to make bruschetta, balsamic, lettuce, etc. The BLT is real good too when you don't mind eating fatty bacon. I'd recommend always getting one of the rolls as your bread of choice because $7 for a regular sized square sandwich is SUCH a ripoff. Anyways, since I'll be here for a few more years, I will be trying more specials and building up that special bond with all the workers there. :) read more

7/21/07 Update: They've changed their french roll! It's not nearly as crispy on the outside, melt in your mouth on the inside. Now, it's just pretty decent. Sigh! Also, it seems they are starting to skimp on the sandwhich fillings that are measured on the spot. I ordered the chicken salad sandwhich a little while ago and had a little smear of chicken salad. It seems though if you stick to the choices that were made up earlier in the day (any of the straight meats), they are still giving out great portions. The veggies are still really nummy and fresh... Well, I guess perfection can't last forever... sigh. 4/28/07 I have a hard time going to any kind of sandwich shop because of this place. I always find myself saying, "Nope, it won't be as good as the Big Sandwich Place, I can't stand the disappointment". Seriously. The bread is made at a local bakery (I adore the french roll - a little tough for some people - so you might want to try the Dutch Crunch if you're worried), the veggies and meats are plentiful and fresh... sigh... I usually can't resist an Italian with everything since it's gigantoid and everything melts so wonderfully in the mouth. The Pastrami is a favorite, and when they have the turkey club special (with fresh avocado that they cut right in front of you) it's the default. I'm knocking one star down, due to the following changes: Refrain yourself from getting the refrigerated pastas and salads--they are incredibly greasy and artery clogging. On the other hand, they have also raised the price of coffee refills from 50 cents to $1. A bit lame, considering that their coffee tastes burnt with residual coffee grinds. Mmmm, yum! This cafe/deli/BBQ is the perfect place for lunch - if you can beat the 12 o'clock mob. (And even then, they make the sandwiches fast, so the line is moving along nicely.) I love the bagel and lox for less than $3, on an Asiago cheese bagel. But their sandwiches are great, and you can ask for all sorts of extras, since they are a gourmet deli. Plus, pick up chips, soup, ready-made salad, all sorts of beverages including chai tea lattes, or even single-use packs of Tylenol. Over the summer, they have a grill running on some days, so you can grab a burger or a hot dog, too. And then sit out in the "bird cage" of CCSR and people-watch. Too bad lunch break is so short! TIP: To beat the lunch crowd, sign up on mytango.com and place your order. In the time it takes for me to walk through the hospital, my sandwich is freshly made, waiting for me. Seriously - ridiculously high quality ingredients, massive quantities of meat and veggies - no skimping! - very friendly and fun staff (especially if you speak a little spanish), very reasonable prices (especially if you opt for the Lox and bagel option for breakfast - cheapest good lox anywhere in the bay that I've been to) and surprisingly good coffee (try the vannilla hazelnut with a little bit of fresh nutmeg - the grinder is on the counter next to the register). They also take credit cards, which is nice as well. Just make sure to avoid the ridiculous lunch rush around noon... Other big plusses - Tuesday and Thursdays, awesome barbeque outside - really really good... try the steak sandwich... awesome... This place is a better place to get breakfast than Tazza D'amore at SF Caltrain, so I usually come here when I've run out of my morning yogurt. I always get the cinnamon raisin bagel with cream cheese, toasted. It's pretty decent, except for a few times when the bagel wasn't toasted enough. It usually is just fine though. I can't really give four stars for a toasted bagel with cream cheese though! I just can't. Their breakfast sandwiches are way expensive ($4.50 for just a bagel, egg, and cheese?) and not really worth it. I can make a better breakfast sandwich in my sleep. Their sandwiches are okay, but nothing really to write home about. This place is a solid three stars. read more

Breakfast: decent selection (bagels, egg sandwiches), ok prices. I am underwhelmed by their coffee. Lunch: decent sandwich selection, ok prices. During the summer there is sometimes a BBQ. I was disappointed by the tri-tip sandwich, and tri-tip is my favorite piece of cow. I don't know if I'll be giving the BBQ a second chance for a burger or anything. It is the closest food to me, but unfortunately the meat smell coming out their back door into my hallway becomes overwhelming. Lutticken's is a good place for a quick bite to eat and coffee in the morning. With the other med school crowd, I usually eat here pretty often when I'm too lazy to venture to the massive crowds at Clark Center's Nexus. The main thing to get here is the sandwiches. They're build-your-own sandwiches for a good price. Also, they usually have some special sandwich of the day. This place also sells soup, chips, prepackaged salads (which they make every morning fresh), and occasionally, they'll have a BBQ outside of the deli. Lutticken's is also a good place to get coffee in the morning, as it's probably the only place that has decent Hazelnut coffee. Be careful though, the coffee served here is freakin' hot. I just got back from picking up a sandwich at Lutticken's Stanford location and have to honestly say that the sandwich was not great - bland at best would be a more appropriate description. I was third in line and the staff was tediously slow. With three people making sandwiches behind the counter, I expected the line to move quickly. My big peeve is the four very thin slices of ham that were put on my $6.50 sandwich. I can go over to the Safeway in Menlo Park on El Camino and pay a $1.00 more for extra meat and come out of there with a huge sandwich - a sandwich excruciatingly filling even when eating only half. The sandwiches at Lutticken's aren't bad, they're just okay and okay doesn't warrant a return visit. read more

Lutticken's Deli is in the building right next to Stanford Hospital and is a great option to the Market Square Cafe (http://www.yelp.com/biz/market-square-cafeteria-palo-alto) in the hospital itself. I've had a decent chicken salad on Dutch crunch sandwich here, and that's a nice alternative to the boring grilled chicken sandwich at the main hospital. The line was a little long at 12:15pm, but became pretty manageable by 12:45pm. I highly recommend you check this place out if you are visiting the hospital and don't want to drive downtown for lunch. read more

I like Luttickens. The sandwiches are very good but can run on the pricey side once you get a drink and bag of chips. If you get the sandwich alone it'll be under $10. It's good food for a quick lunch. The sandwiches are made well and to order. The lines can be long here but with 3 people making sandwiches at a time it moves pretty fast. You can see your sandwich being made and what toppings are available (even though they are on the menu, I like to look anyways). It's a small place that has no indoor seating, so expect to get your sandwich and leave. The good thing is that Stanford campus is very picturesque and you can eat anywhere on campus. Check the soup of the day because usually it's good. I say usually because there are just some soups I'm not partial too. If you like the soup of the day it's a perfect pairing with the sandwich. just be prepared to shell out over $10. read more

I must say, the best veggie meatball subs ever! Back in the day when I worked at this side of campus, I used to get them every so often and haven't forgotten them. I also enjoyed and miss the coffee in the mornings with the large muffins, priced just right. Earlier today I ran in for a spinach and cheese calzone with a soda as I was about to be late to a training at Polya Hall, and was so surprised that Barb (I think it was Barb) still recognized me after all these years! So that's another plus in my book for Lutticken's. The staff here are extremely rude. My pregnant wife came in and one of the employees yelled at her for ordering two things at once and then proceeded to speak a different language to her coworker. These employees are often eating and conversing when I come in for breakfast. They do not say thank you and are very lackadaisical. Please train these employees on customer service. read more
