Tidewater Adventist Academy is a Great Place for Christian Military Families…read more Like most military families with children, our biggest concern during a move is finding great schools for our kids. Finding our children a great learning community is the key to transitioning them to a new place with the least amount of stress. We all care that our children's education be interrupted as little as possible and we definitely don't want them to get behind. Tidewater Adventist Academy was wonderful at helping our son transition into school here in Hampton Roads. We don't see how they could have done it any better. Before we moved, we communicated with their admissions liaison and she was caring and friendly. We felt like she understood our situation as a military family and she worked with us to get all the paperwork and information we needed so that our son could transition into school smoothly. We felt like the staff already cared about our son's education. Since schools teach with different curriculum and no one class is at the same level, TAA did the standard assessment to figure out where our son was at. What set them apart was the personal attention they gave him so that when he came for his first day of school he was in the right place and not lost at all. We met with the teacher before my son entered her classroom so she not only knew where he was but she was also able to connect with him personally. The smaller class sizes at Tidewater Adventist Academy make it easier for new students to be involved and included. Our very introverted son made friends quickly and easily. Tidewater Adventist Academy is prepared to meet the needs of Military Families in our area and we are so thankful for the quality Christian education that our son is receiving and for the wonderful friendships that he is building. If you are moving to the area, we can't recommend TAA enough.

The adults and parents take themselves too seriously and are the kind of adults that peaked in high school and think they have the authority to do and say whatever they want. The teachers love to embarrass students based on learning abilities and make sure nothing stays discreet. The school does absolutely nothing in the way of bullying besides some lousy posters. If you are getting bullied in The Williams school best believe your bully will not get any punishments or long term consequences. The kids there are also horrible and will shun anybody out of their circle who doesn't fit their requirements. Going there feels like an overpriced cult that you can't seem to get out of, and once you do you can't even remember why you went there in the first place.

When she took control of the school she brought along a teacher named Mrs. Pinner. We all hated her. She has a way of teaching that just shows she doesn't know what she is talking about. Once I had to tell her how to do an assignment. I found this absolutely outrageous. I also found that the way they would discipline was not the standard. Students can expect to get in trouble for being too loud on the stairs when really we are just talking. Students can expect to get locked out of a classroom even if your previous teacher let you out late. These two things can be excused as they aren't on a regular basis however the new management is awful. In conclusion Dr. Hedrick and Mrs. Pinner have got to go.

The kids are given age appropriate levels of autonomy, which has really helped my son thrive. They get the kids outside as often as possible and utilize their great outdoor space, including a wooded area behind the school. One example of this is my son and his class have marked out small squares of land in the woods as part of a science project and they go out there with some frequency to monitor how the land changes over the seasons. I've heard very cool reports home about this. They also just go out there to be kids and to play! The school is doing a really outstanding job of meeting each kid where they are along their social/emotional/academic learning process. For a small school they also have an impressive availability of resources to scaffold the kids where they need help. As my son is currently in 5th grade, I was thrilled to learn they will be having a 6th grade next year (2023-2024 school year) and plan to open a full 6th - 8th middle school the following year! The teachers are top notch - very engaged in designing an individualized educational experience for each child and are highly communicative and supportive with both the parents and kids. They have gotten my son from hating school to telling us about all the cool things he's learning when he gets home. Truly an amazing place!

The teachers are caring with years of teaching experience. The fact that families send all their children to the program and the lack of teacher turnover speaks to the strength of this program. The positives of this school include creating a good connection between The staff and parents. The Teachers work together with the children and parents and anything that is challenging providing an update on the progress of their child, with their education and well-being. Additionally Everybody there wants your child to succeed in their education and in life. Well, this might not be a negative for every single parent or family one downfall in my opinion is the cost. Although this is not a public school, and there are fees that come with this school, it can be hard to maintain as a single parent. I would love to see school lunches an curriculum fees decreased. However, I understand that might not be a potential in today's inflation/cost. The only thing I have noticed over the years is that title one services can be a little unstable, but I do not think it is because of the school. I am not behind the scenes and able to provide more insight. Although, I think it is awesome that most of the staff, if not all of the staff, including the pastor/principal are able to connect with each family and remember their name. I think it says a lot about a school several different staff, and even the principal knows the child's name and their family.

When I witness a teacher shake a baby multiple times or hold them like they are a foot ball when just a few weeks old is UNACCEPTABLE. There were times where the preschool director " TLC" said she would " take care of it" but never " reported " it she just fired that person. Where is the justice for those innocent little babies? She also has her " favorites " and treated the rest of her staff like we weren't even there. Do y'all know how sad that is to work for someone like that? Me being a parent I wouldn't send my child there it is so UNSAFE. God bless those children.
