A good meal for under 5 Euros.
This isn't fancy dancey, it's not fake ethnic. It's Prix-Fixe down home neighborhood cooking. It's simple and it's good. Chicken or pork cutlets, breaded or not, great crispy potato pancakes with goulash, pierogi in different configurations, mushroom or cheese sauce, ribs - it changes daily on the chalk-boards, within reason.
You start with a choice from 4-5 hearty soups and then a plate with a main course from a list of 10 or so choices, with vegetable, parboiled young potato and some salad. Vegetarians can find some tasty and meatless pancakes, cheese or sweet pierogi. You also get a glass of nice fruit compote. The whole meal, 17 zlotys. You can add beer and other beverages and still come out under 5 Euros, never hungry.
You order at the counter, they bring you the food and they ask that you bus your own plates. The small staff is friendly, they handle foreigners like they belong here. The decor is un-decorated, clean, a few steps down from street level. Athletic Marco the owner is there on occasion, with his crew cut and white t-shirt. Sometimes a teacher brings in a class on the way to visit Krakow monuments, and they politely pack one of the dining rooms. If you're staying anywhere near, they'll make you a regular. Last dinner orders 7:45pm, 7:30 is safer. They also have a breakfast menu starting at 8:00am, and there's a coffee and cake offering for an afternoon drop-in. read more
