A new review for the New Year, in my new home!!!…read more
Five months ago I made the terrifyingly thrilling decision to start looking to buy a place in San Francisco. The first item of business: getting a real estate agent. But as none of my friends have yet bought homes in the Bay Area, I didn't know where to start. Finally, I remembered a friend of a friend had purchased a place, I spoke with him and he highly recommended his agent, Jon Lien. Jon primarily focuses on properties in the East Bay but was willing to come over to SF and work with me.
One twist is that since this is my first place, I really wanted my parents, who live in LA, to be involved (and they really wanted to be involved), as they've purchased several properties over the last 30 years. Props to Jon for signing on to help me knowing that my parents wanted to be included in the proceedings (and equal props to my mom for restraining her involvement to phone calls and emails directed only to me). (But then again I guess that arrangement is fairly common as the girl who purchased the place next to me also had parental involvement.)
Anyway, I had done a fair bit of research on my own before Jon and I started working together so I sent him a list of all the properties I wanted to look at, along with my requirements (close to public transit, lots of light, bathtub, parking if possible). He arranged for me to view all the available ones and used my list to find some other places I hadn't come across. And that's essentially the way things went, I'd send him something I was interested in and he'd follow up with it or he would sent me details about properties that fit my requirements. And then home prices started dropping so he would keep an eye on places that I wanted but were just a touch too costly. For 3 months we checked out every studio from SOMA to Pac Heights. Jon was really flexible, we went and saw places on the weekend, a few times when places had to be seen between 9-5 he even picked me up from work and dropped me back off because I only get a hour lunch. We made three offers, the first two we meet and filled out the paperwork together, the third (and final!) offer he talked me through it on the phone and then I emailed it over to him.
When the last offer was accepted, the fun really got started because what I bought is a TIC. The disclosures alone came to over 250 pages! However Jon took pity on me, meet with me and went over all the key docs and gave me a brief run-down of what to look for in the rest of them. (It still took me six hours to actually read them all.) Jon arranged for the home inspection and was present for it as well. When all papers were signed and the bank had taken all my money, Jon meet at the apartment to give me my keys and say congrats.
Jon is great to work with, he's really calm and laid-back, not pushy at all. He's very responsive, whether it's email or phone calls, and when he says he's going to do something he gets it done. He's also got a really good sense of humor.
Fun facts about Jon: he's a Cal Poly SLO grad and he also works in real estate for restaurants.
Having just purchased Casita Camille, I can't imagine buying another home but one day far far away, I hope I will and I'd definitely work with Jon again.
