For those who may not be aware, Tar River Veterinary Hospital is under new ownership. Our pets have…read morebeen patients there for nearly five years, but that relationship has now come to an end. About 10 days ago, our daughter brought her beloved cat to Tar River Veterinary Hospital for a flea issue. A veterinary technician applied a topical flea treatment during that visit. Yesterday, after continuing to see fleas, our daughter called the office to ask whether a second treatment was necessary. She was told yes and instructed to bring the cat in. When she arrived, a second dose of the same medication was applied. Only after administering the treatment did the technician review the chart and realize the cat had already received the identical medication just nine days earlier--far too soon for another dose. At that point, they quickly washed the application area with Dawn dish soap and instructed her to take the cat home and monitor for signs of overdose, including drooling, seizures, or neurological symptoms. She was told that if any of these occurred, she should take the cat to an emergency veterinarian. There was no apology, no acknowledgment of the error, and no offer to keep the cat for observation--despite having just warned her of potentially serious side effects. She was simply sent home to monitor the situation on her own. The following day, my wife went to the clinic seeking an explanation and to express our concerns about how the situation was handled. One would expect the first question to be whether the cat was okay--but that was not the case. This entire experience was extremely stressful and deeply disappointing. It has left us with little confidence in the clinic's attention to detail or concern for patient safety. As a result, we will not be returning.

Sharing a tiny bit of our back story is important in order to appreciate the merit of my review…read more In May 2025, Youngsville AH/Dr Bailey sewed my dog, Matilda, up full of her own long hairs that fell all inside her open abdominal cavity/peritoneum during a routine spay. (You can read my Yelp review of Youngsville Animal Hospital w/photos). Matilda survived against all odds thanks to BluePearl Raleigh Emergent surgery & ICU stay and several other variables. As a consequence, She has serious health issues that require ongoing monitoring and treatment. We were (still are) traumatized, as we trusted Dr Miranda Bailey/owner of YAH for two years prior and she betrayed our trust in the worst ways. I will never blindly trust a vet again. After months of discussions with a LOT of people in our communities and deep dive research in local vet practices and each vet, I found that Franklinton Animal Hospital excels in client satisfaction, professionalism, clinical knowledge, rules/standards of care and very reasonable costs. It does not hurt that they were thoroughly trained by Dr. Lee Darch, who was an exceptional vet in this area for decades until he moved across country. Dr Darch's training is very evident when seen in person with Dr. Alex, Dr. Dragona, Dr Goran. My husband and I were beyond anxious, scared to take Matilda to any vet other than CVCA or a few trusted ER vets at Blue Pearl, but we had to go to one for a possible ear infection. We knew we had to choose a primary care vet. It has been a scary, highly stressful and time consuming process. We chose Franklinton AH. Being very understandably protective of Matilda, we scrutinized every gesture, tone of voice, movements, each touch of Matilda, questioned content of what was said to us. So, we were ready to leave out of there with even the slightest indication that something was off. We stayed. We returned. Each visit with Franklinton was like night & day compared to YAH. For example Basic Handling: at Franklinton AH, the staff/vet consistently handled Matilda with ease, confidence, knowledge, and obvious skilled training in a way that made her still for them as they examined her, Xrayed her, got all in her painful ears, etc. They were gentle and Matilda responded to that. It was a positive and calm experience for her (and us). She has not needed any pre-sedation for assessments or even xrays, nor were those options even suggested by them. Matilda was happy, even laughing and stays in that state of being from entering Franklinton AH doors until leaving. You can only imagine the surprise and deep relief we felt after what we had become used to at Youngsville Animal Hospital for the past two years: For example-Basic Handling: Dr. Bailey (and Dr. Smith at the one visit w/her) literally flailed around on the floor with no plan with the vet assistant, which created chaos, fear and stress. They would have her cornered in the room as my husband and I would hold her. My husband and I were tasked with assisting them and even solely holding/handling Matilda, trying to calm her. All this time, they had me thinking this was normal interactions and that it was Matilda's problem, not theirs. I was scolded once for not giving tramadol before a routine visit when I didn't know I was supposed to. A justification for putting on a muzzle on her, was falsely saying that Matilda bit me, which was not true at all. She had never displayed aggression to anyone, ever. Dr. B put a muzzle on that was way too small. So, My hubby and I held onto her for dear life so that muzzle could come off asap. YAH handling was a forceful physical and mental assault compared to Franklinton AH's professional, calm easy handling of her. I will always feel guilt for trusting YAH and staying there as long as we did. However, I am impressed beyond words in the professionalism, handling, analytical thinking, thorough physical assessments....and kindness practiced at Franklinton Animal Hospital. Matilda is finally treated with respect.
