Manila's Chinatown is the first and oldest in the world!
Glenn L.

Binondo's Chinatown is famed to be the first and oldest Chinatown in the world! The Philippines is a diverse country with influences from the Americans, Spanish, Malay, and of course the Chinese. Binondo's Chinatown is the best place to visit to get an introduction to the Chinoy (Filipino-Chinese) community! This place has also been featured on CNN Travel because of its rich history, culture, and FOOD scene!!!. There are plenty of restaurants to choose from where Filipino and Chinese cuisines are mixed and highlighted! There's also a famous family owned shop where local and foreign tourists flock to to get snacks to bring back as souvenirs! Add this to your Manila itinerary!

Beautiful facade that reminds me of Macau

First thing that came to mind when I saw Lucky Chinatown Mall's facade from its balcony was: "Are we in Macau?" Indeed, the facade in the mall's courtyard-inspired structure looks reminiscent of Macau's colonial buildings and houses - at least, from what I saw in photos. And, when I first came here during Chinese New Year, there were beautiful paper red lanterns hanging across the courtyard. At night, when the lanterns were lit, the view from the balcony was also amazing. There were also other Chinese New Year decorations inside the mall. We were also able to catch a Chinese dragon dance and lion dance. As this is Lucky Chinatown Mall, of course there are Chinese establishments and restaurants like Sincerity. While I still prefer eating at the cheaper stand-alone restaurants and food stalls in Binondo, it's nice to stay at an air-conditioned mall, especially after a long day of walking around Binondo.

Whenever you're looking to bring people to Divisoria, Lucky Chinatown Mall is a good starting point. It is new, it is exciting, it is CHINESE, and of course it is air-conditioned so before you step out of the scorching heat and elbow your way to Divisoria, here's a nice place to relax in before all that mess. Lucky Chinatown is, in my opinion, actually an elite mall, with shops like those that you can find in the Glorietta-Greenbelt complex. Since it's rather new, not a lot of people come here and that's always fun (get to live the dream of having the mall to yourself). Things I love about it? I love their food court since it has a fine mix of Chinese cuisine and fast foods. I also love how their cinemas don't get too crowded even during premier season.

Every city has a Chinatown, but did you know that the one in Manila is the oooooldest Chinatown in the world? Crazy, right? It's been a chinese community way before Spanish colonizers came in 1521. The exact spot was already a bustling commercial center where early Chinese traders and native Filipinos would do business and live as a community. It became an established (and I wanna say, rebranded) Chinatown when it was founded as Binondo by the Spanish as soon their colonial rule was well in place at the turn of the 16th century. It ended up becoming the most ~happening~ downtown area in Manila with streets like Escolta where the elite of Manila would hang out to do business and shopping. It was basically the business and cultural center of the city then. After the war though, most of that disappeared. But Binondo, as the established Chinatown, still remained a Chinese center with many unique restaurants, eateries, and shops that continue to flourish today. SO many Chinatown food trips and walking tours are done here, and you'd do well to go on one yourself! Visit for some authentic Chinese fare and unique finds in side-street shops. Try places like Sincerity Restaurant or Dong Bei Dumpling in Yuchengco Street, sketchy (but not really) hole-in-the-wall food spots like Quick Snack in market alley Carvajal Street, and even do some shopping at Lucky Chinatown Mall or 168! It's messy, crazy, rough, and a hodge-podge of so many things, but definitely a unique adventure.

Since Manila is infested with malls in every city, you would agree with me that finally there's a nice mall in Binondo which is Lucky China Town Mall. This was established by the real estate developer, Megaword Corporation. I guess since this place caters to the Chinese Filipino community, they really placed a lot of choices for Chinese food. You can choose from among the following: Sincerity Cafe & Restaurant, King Chef Sea Food, Tao Yuan Restaurant, Shi Lin Restaurant, San Gou La Mien, Wan Chai Tea House, and Ling Nam, The mall is literally an explosion of Chinese everything (kidding aside). There are nice stores here where you can go to as well - Beauty Bar, National Book Store, and even a Department Store. The overall feel of this place is that of a hotel. The facade looks quite fancy!

I always considered Divisoria top-notch for deals and variety, and this shopping center did not disappoint. The mall has about six floors packed with countless aisles and shops to explore. The lower floor is not air-conditioned, but as you go higher, the atmosphere becomes more comfortable and boutique-style. Unlike Greenhills, the vendors here don't constantly hound or pressure you while shopping, which made the experience much more enjoyable. The prices are already relatively cheap, so there's not much need to bargain aggressively. I didn't even make it to the top floors because there was just so much to see. I'm already looking forward to coming back and exploring more.

168 Shopping Mall (MANILA Philippines)…read more There are 7 malls in Divisoria and this is the shopping mall we spent the most time. This is an indoor mall with three levels and over 300 stalls/stores. It is air-conditioned inside for shoppers' comfort. When you hear Divisoria it is synonymous to cheap bargains and you can haggle the price and get it more cheap. They have everything here, especially off-the-rack clothing, purses and shoes, novelty items, gadgets... well, almost, everything. I tried to look for a Sacramento Kings jersey but they didn't have it LoL! They also have food stalls. Mom was able to buy a Filipiniana (aka 'Maria Clara'). It was a fun shopping experience here. Cash is king so have some handy before coming to Divisoria. I guarantee you'll find something and you won't be able to leave empty handed, that's for sure. Review #3293

Street Market in Manila Philippines…read more This is the largest street market in Manila. When i hear people say "mura" (cheap) I immediately think of Divisoria where you can haggle for the final price. The place is dirty and crowded and hot but it was fun seeing the many vendors and browsing through the many merchandise. We had our cousin come with us and she was the one who haggled for us LoL! I actually found some cool items here including clothing, and knock off "authentic replica" stuff. LoL! We also found a classic mahjong set for mom and a nice embroidered "barong Tagalog" (a traditional Filipino attire) for my brother-in-law for P450 which equals to $8. Oh man, we tried some street food too like corn on the cob, melon juice and Calamansi juice. I could shop and eat here all day. The place is huge. There are banks accessible around if we wanted to exchange currency. All cash here so bring enough. I guarantee you will not leave here empty handed. Review #3289

I spent a lot of time here. As soon as you walk into the mall, it doesn't feel like you're in the Philippines anymore. The canal was nice to see during the day and at night. You can even take a gondola through the canal. They also have an area where you can feed pigeons seeds. They have a lot of the stores and the restaurants that we have in the US. I was joking around saying that I traveled 7200 miles to eat at a Denny's in the Philippines. Lol. And you know I had to hit up the Uniqlo here! Will I be back? Of course. Especially if I stay at the same Airbnb. I'll see you when I see you Venice Grand Canal Mall!

The mall offers a lot: a supermarket; bookstores; fast food and casual dining restaurants; a multi-screen movie theater; spaces for dance and play--and a lot of retail shopping. You can also buy tickets for a gondola ride or rent a swan boat. This location provided an opportunity for me to people watch; examine products and brands unfamiliar to me; and to price compare goods in the PHL, versus back home. It was interesting.

In any high-end shopping mall in Makati City, the cost for a pack would be triple in comparison to the same pack sold in wholesale shopping mecca, Divisoria. Since a penny saved is a penny earned, I would rather choose the item that costs less. To make my trip to Divisoria in Manila worth it, I would buy what I need in bulk. Because Divisoria is a crazy maze, finding a particular thing might prove quite daunting. So, I am going to let you in on a little secret. For all your packaging needs, your one-stop shop is Meisic Mall, which was formerly called 11/88 Mall. If you are in need of simple supplies such as brown paper bags of various sizes, different shapes of clear cellophane bags with sticky seals, plastic ziplock bags, ecobags of every shape and color (which you can even order made-to-measure and silk-screened with a logo of your choice), one-colored or patterned paper gift bags, all sorts of adhesives, and so much more - Meisic Mall is your wholesale packaging paradise. Now, hurry and shop now! You can thank me later.

And since they're not in a prime spot like the stalls in 168, the stuff here are relatively cheaper. It was my tita (the Divisoria queen) who introduced us to this mall. She said she shops here more often than in 168 because of the reasons I mentioned above. We took after her advice and we are now "suki" in several stalls. My mom loves the stall at the ground floor selling different home and bath items such as towels, blankets, handkerchief and some undershirts. Ms. Mel, the owner knows us and lets us leave our shopping bags at her store and we pick it up when we're ready to head home. On the second floor, there's a stall selling baby clothes and items like Busha socks and cloth diapers. And on the third floor is a small stall selling the cheapest party favors and decors. Those are my prized finds.
