Our past experience with Master Park's Taekwondo was friendly, but confusing. Kids who could barely stay balanced were advancing through the ranks. At Dante's, that doesn't fly. I filled out the website contact form and got a quick response from Norma. When we showed up the next day, I expected the usual sit-down about pricing or discounts for paying cash (code for off the books), but that never came. Instead, Dante walked in, shook hands with every parent, and jumped right into class. What I saw was exactly what I hoped for: a balance of challenge, fun, and respect. My daughters (7 and 8) were pushed to think, focus, and move. I watched a girl struggle emotionally--Dante didn't coddle or ignore it. He guided her through, and she finished strong. That kind of moment tells you everything you need to know. There's discipline here, but it's not cold. It's real. Kids are expected to give their best. Parents were laughing as Dante cracked jokes--like threatening to lock kids in a closet or eat their feet. It's the kind of tough love that works, and the kids eat it up. After class, I asked the girls if they'd like to come back twice a week. Immediate yes. When I asked Norma what's next, she simply said: "Go home, talk about it as a family." No pitch, no hard sell. They didn't need to--the program speaks for itself. While we were there, I saw a dad bring his son over to speak with Dante about a tough class he had. I was then greeted by the other owner Art, who welcomed me as the class was doing warm ups. At the time, I had no clue they were owners, just based upon how integrated into the school they were/are. All of the schools I've been to I never met the owner. I think it's very cool. A lot of gyms feel like corporations. Not this one. It's a perfect balance between professionalism and fun. Emily and Art genuinely care about you and don't put up with any crap. If you get hurt, they will make it their mission to find out who, what, when, where, and, why. That brings me to my next reason why I love PBJJ. The culture at this gym is vastly different than the other gyms I've been to. Not only are the owners welcoming, but everyone that trains there is welcoming. Every single instructor will introduce themselves to you if they have never met you before. Instead of making you feel like a noob on your first, second, third day, they make you feel comfortable and a part of the family. Most importantly, the quality of the instructors and classes are top notch. Most of the instructors are black belts, which is highly unusual. They are all so knowledgeable, and each one brings their own style which helps you develop your game better. Additionally, from white to black belt, there is a very diverse mix of students that train there. This gives you the opportunity to roll with people of various experience and sizes. It also gives you the chance to have multiple rolling partners so you're not constantly rolling with the same few people. Overall, BJJ is a sport you have to love, obviously, but where you train makes all of the difference. If you're new to BJJ, or you're looking for a gym, I highly recommend just coming and trying out a class. You will soon understand why I've grown so fond for that place.

This is awesome as I get to use the rest of the gym's facilities which are all included in my membership fee. This includes cardio machines, free weights, squat racks and boxing heavy bags and double end bags. The bjj instruction is top notch with 7 days a week of classes available and reasonable class sizes. The teachers are awesome. They also have a family plan which I used to enroll my 10 year old in monthly membership as well for $125 extra. This is a very reasonable price for up to 5 days a week of children's classes. Parents looking to roll should definitely consider enrolling their child for these great classes. The kids classes run from Sunday thru Thursday. I'm happy I made the decision to come back.

I ended up getting smothered a few minutes in and I tapped and said I need to reset because of my elbow. He proceeded to tell me "this is not how that works" (ON MY FIRST CLASS! ) when I asked to get up. I had to use everything I had to get to a position so I could breathe and eventually force the instructor off. I wouldn't recommend this gym to anyone honestly. The owner came in and told me to quote "get the fuck out". Thuggish, little rules, not clean. Sad that an instructor has the ability to strip the fun out of such an amazing combat sport.
