I agree, this restaurant is more hype. We really wanted this restaurant to be as good as reviews stated, but were extremely disappointed in the food quality. We visited our children in wichita and decided to take them out for a nice dinner. Being siciliano, from New York ( we live in Arizona now) & eating food cooked by immigrants of Italy..I guess I am spoiled. I expected more from his background. My husband decided to get the chef's special 5 course dinner. The first few appetizers were very "fishy" and did not have much flavor. His polenta was cold. We all shared calamari al vino blanco. This was bland. I ordered an italian basic. Pasta Cabornara which is classic and supposed to be creamy. It was dry as a bone. It was spaghetti and terrible.Food was cold. One of us ordered steak with diced potatoes. Basic. Not worth the amount paid. Potatoes were tiny diced and not flavorful. Desserts were the best on menu. My creme brulee was very good. Bill was almost $200.00-definitely not worth the money. Also not worth the drive to Mulvane Kansas for mediocre food. Shame on being italian and serving food like this. read more

i finally paid a visit to Luciano's. As a northeasterner familiar with good Italian and good pizza I wasn't sure what to think when I heard about this place. So it took me awhile to get all the way down to Mulvane (Mulvane?? Really?)--and I had to convince my wife, too, who, as a native of the NYC area was even more skeptical than I. But in the end even we cynical cultural elite liberal big-city types were very pleasantly surprised. This is a great little spot, romantic and warm and gracious; reminds me of little trattorias I've been to in little tourist towns or larger cities. It has a delightful glassed-in patio-porch area that suggests warmth even in cooler months...tres romantique, to be sure. But I digress...To the food! Italian cooking is often very simple. It depends on high-quality ingredients and does not seek to bludgeon fresh tastes with heavy spices. As an example of this, consider the antipasti misti to start, with the excellent "unwrapped" mozzarella that just oozes off of your fork. Combined with high-quality olive oil and prosciutto, there is a lovely balance of creamy, salty, and savory that does not want for more flashy flavors of garlic, oregano, rosemary, or basil...there's enough here. Feng shui your menu, diners. Our pasta dish was similarly nuanced and subtle. Homemade gnocchi tells you in itself where Luciano wants to go with his food: fresh, handmade, soft, comforting, about timelessness rather than nouveau trends. One of the essences of the old-world home, gnocchi (along with risotto, also on the menu) is humble peasant food, defiantly un-modern and impractical (dating to Roman times), totally dependent on freshness for all its graces. It is basic, subtle, and filling. Pasta carbonara, on the other hand, showed off a bit more of a balancing act with stronger flavors: garlic, oregano, black pepper, and parmesan added a bouquet to balance the hearty saltiness of fatty pancetta. The carbonara was a harbinger of what would happen on the entrees. Luciano goes for balance and nuance without compromising the aesthetic of care with quality ingredients. I was glad to see my filetto al pepe verde listed clearly as "served medium rare;" yes, it must be this way, because the rarer beef flavor has to stand up to the heavier mushroom, pepper, and cream flavors served with it, but also because the pink jus of the beef extrudes into the cream sauce and adds another layer of taste to extend the sensation. This is not easy to do; my wife had a perfectly-prepared veal in a red wine reduction cream sauce, but in this daily special, the cream was a bit too much for the veal's delicate nature (while still being awfully good--as she pointed out, we should be so lucky if that's the worst of Luciano's). Two of the other best dishes appear to be the bruschetta appetizer--this is amazing, not to be missed--and the pasta con salsiccia, where italian sausage is crumbled amongst carrots, garlic, onions, tomatoes, and parmesan to create a delicate, aromatic dish. Pasta with garlic and sausage that is delicate rather than gloopy and heavy--it illustrates once again how important nuance and freshness are to Luciano's. As far as the pricing, Luciano's is less expensive than many "fine dining" options in Wichita that are far lesser in their food. I cannot believe the Larkspur can get away with what they do at the prices they charge, and Yia Yia's--what pompous emptiness. You'd pay half of what they charge even in Kansas City for food of that quality. Luciano's, however, is a fine-dining bargain because of the method of preparation and freshness of ingredients. It's not a business model easily matched with expectations in this market-- nothing done fast, everything done with care and precision, slow is the modus operandi. On second thought...maybe a small, unassuming prairie town like Mulvane is just right for this level of simplicity and time spent. I think I like that idea. More slow, more quiet, more poetry are good things. read more

Luciano's is a fantastic find in the midst of a very small town. The food is fantastic, the space is quaint and homey, and the service is great. Luciano's offers an extremely reasonable lunch menu. You can try a half order of pasta and a small salad for $6.95. The Quatro Formaggi salad and the Spaghetti Aglio, Olio, e Peperoncino are fantastic. This is a great date spot for a weekend. The dinner menu is set up to enjoy multiple courses, true to Italian cuisine. The salads arrive in a delicious, edible Parmesan cheese bowl. I tried the Cotoletta di Maiale, a grilled pork chop with a creamy, sweet mushroom sauce. Delicious. Luciano's is worth the drive from Wichita any day! read more

I was visiting my family over Easter weekend and wanted to take them out for something different - and we all love Italian food. I found Luciano's online and we went for dinner. I was happily surprised - the place is cute and the food was great! I live in LA now and I have to admit I didn't have the highest expectations for an italian restaurant in Mulvane - but it was great! The service was friendly...good wine list (grandma loved the Lambrusco)...the penne dish and mediterranean salad did not disappoint. I'll definitely go back next time I'm in Wichita! read more

I've been going to Luciano's since it opened. Over the years, I've had at least 300 meals there, and I've never once been disappointed. If it weren't for the 30-minute drive from my home, I would eat there every day--except Tuesdays ... when it's closed. read more

Our family stopped for lunch at Luciano's on our way to Austin for Spring Break thanks to Yelp. VERY MUCH worth the 5 minute detour from interstate to avoid fast food. The setting is picture perfect, service is small town thoughtful in all the right ways, and the food is sophisticated, delicious and in just the right portions. What a wonderful restaurant-so worth the drive from Wichita. We went on a Saturday and were seated in the "old dining room." They informed me that the newer side (with windows overlooking the park) typically requires reservations. Good to know for the future! We had bread with an oil/balsamic/herb dipping sauce, bruschetta with fresh mozzarella, a delicious salad in a crispy parmesan cheese bowl, pasta, a bottle of chianti, and creme brûlée. Amazing restaurant with great food and friendly staff. We stopped in for lunch after a football game in town. We shared some bruschetta and a couple entrees between 2 adults and a 6 year old. It was delicious without being too heavy or filling. Which was great because we really wanted to try some of the delicious looking desserts that were in the front counter. Save room for dessert! Goods: Excellent staff. Friendly and attentive; knew the menu. Good wine and nice antipasto. Others: Food lacked the zest necessary for high quality Italian food. Lasagna was lacking in thickness and had little flavor. Carbonara didn't appear to be prepared by the standard method and lacked both zest and consistency. The staff, wine, appetizers, and general ambiance made for a pleasant meal and good evening overall. The food just wasn't up to par. Maybe a stressed kitchen due to it being Mothers' Day, but it wasn't crowded and we had reservations. I wouldn't go again, but it was a really nice experience because of the people, who were awesome. The food, not so much. Wish I could give them a better review but just can't. read more

Luciano's is a gem a few minutes south of Wichita. Firstly, the interior is clean and bright, with local art hanging on the walls. The service is outstanding: our waiter was extremely attentive, friendly, and knowledgable. For dinner, we ordered the gnocchi special ($?) and bucatini all' amatriciana ($10), spaghetti-like noodles in slow-cooked tomato sauce and diced guanciale. The gnocchi was light and fresh, sauteed with tomatoes, garlic, and spinach; you could definitely tell the gnocchi was homemade! Sometimes, gnocchi dishes can be drowned in heavy creams and sauces, but this was the opposite. The bucatini was very flavorful, but a little on the saltier side. Our first visit to Luciano's was for our 44th wedding anniversary on Saturday, July 28. It was a totally satisfying experience. Surroundings: street parking was ample and convenient. Ambiance: simple and unpretentious; tables were large leaving plenty of leg and elbow room and ample space for condiments, water/wine glasses, bread and butter plates. Service: impeccable! Waitress was very knowledgeable about menu and entrees. She was there when and if we needed her, and didn't intrude or hover when we didn't need her. Food: we had a five-course meal - appetizer, antipasti, pasta, entree and dessert. Each course was professionally prepared and presented, delicious and appropriately sized. It was such a pleasure to eat dishes that weren't over-seasoned and that brought out the full flavor of the foods; and, to finish each course at a leisurely pace without being rushed by the wait staff. Our total meal took about two hours allowing us to enjoy the dining experience and to have an enjoyable conversation. Drink: we ordered wine by the glass, but felt that the volume of wine served (about 4-5 oz.) was small and skimpy. I would suggest that management consider serving a more generous amount of wine per glass. Prices: for the ambiance, quality and flavor of the dishes and service, Luciano's offers an exceptional value. Our check (with tip included) was under $130.00. A little more than meals at an Applebies, Red Rock, Granite City, etc., but then we didn't have to run out and buy a bottle of antacids after our meal at Luciano's. Overall impression: we've lived in MI, OH, TX, FL and KS. We've eaten in many fine, "name" restaurants in the states that we lived in, but have never had a more positive or memorable dining experience anywhere else than our recent celebration at Luciano's. read more

Mamma mia! Eccellente! From the caprese and calamari al vino bianco to the crème brulèe and tiramisu - delizioso! Personally, I took half portions for the salad and the pasta, but after five courses, I was more than sated. The wine list was extensive enough to match the menu, affordable and many selections were offered by the glass as well as the bottle. Some memorable points: 1) Fresh food prepared with pride. (Although, our table declined the cheesecake because it is not made by the restaurant - how lamentable.) 2) Edible cheese bowls for full-sized salads. 3) A soft pudding-like crème brulèe - not the usual custard. 4) Very good service. 5) Two visits to our table by the chef himself. Some modest points of discontent: 1) The pasta carbonara, while delectable in taste, left me unimpressed with the egg in the sauce (My personal recipe for carbonara sauce does not include egg, and I think it is more velvety.) and the a dente state of the pasta was almost crunchy. 2a) I was told the kitchen could not work with me to order the Filletto al Pepe Verde well done, so I ordered the Felletto alla Senape, well done. Naturally, the table waited for my steak to cook; alas, when the Filletto al Pepe Verde for my table mate arrived, it was - guess what - well done! Ostensibly this happened because it sat in the sauce while my steak cooked. My table mate was disappointed as he had hoped for medium rare. 2b) Consequently, I would like to express my opinion that the kitchen could improve its manner of responding to guests by preparing dishes per request. 3) The Cotoletta di Maiale was unavailable. Disappointing because I have always wanted to try a sous vide dish. 4) I wish the silverware could have been refreshed at least once. Overall, a delectable, delightful experience. Would I go back? Atmosphere is nice, service was good. Food was a little disappointing. Tomatoes were not fully ripe and little seasoning on the Caprese bruschetta, but nice portion size. Quattro formaggi also lacked seasoning. Lasagna was an odd pink/orange color. Did not appear to be a meat sauce. It looked nothing like I expected and actually jiggled when the plate was placed on the table. Every bite was mushy texture and one flavor, again lacked seasoning. I've been here before and dinner was good. Even though this Sunday lunch experience was less than impressive, we will give it another try. read more

I've not been on Yelp much, but our recent experiences have warranted me joining. No axe to grind, wife and I went there two years ago and it was superb. Went 5/20 (our 20th wedding anniversary), and were completely disappointed. My lovely wife ordered the lobster (most expensive thing on the menu), it was rubbery and over cooked. Top it off, the "butter" to dip it in was watered down... I had the Tuscany? Steak. Meh. Good flavor, mediocre cut of meat. Fatty, but thin and too much gristle. I cook better routinely. The lobster ravioli was very good, could tell the pasta was house made. But it didn't make up for our lack luster experience. I can see no reason to make the trip from Wichita again. Sadly. My take away is that maybe they're struggling financially? It plays that way. I don't know, of course. read more

There are no "true Italian" restaurants in Wichita that we enjoy more than Luciano's in Mulvane, Kansas, America!!! It quickly became our favorite Italian place to eat. We already have our reservations for Valentine's day, and "our" table! Pricey, but worth every penny if you love Italian and wine. There is only one downfall (and it's personal). I was in a party of 10. We were through eating and was preparing to move to the roof patio. Several of us had to go to the restroom and a wait person directed us to use a hallway in the rear to access the restroom. I was the last one to attempt to go, but Luciano stopped me and began to berate me in front of our party. I didn't say anything and just turned around and went outside to go upstairs. He continued his tirade saying I was not supposed to use the hallway. He followed me outside and halfway up the stairs. I never said a word to him. I was literally speechless.
