I've been looking for a stylist since I moved from Chicago and I've finally found my replacement at Lucas. Although there was a bit of a scheduling conflict the first time I came in, the staff was very accommodating and my stylist made up for it with a free travel size shampoo/conditioner. So nice! I've seen both Shiloh and Holly for hair cuts, both of which are great. They're both very sweet and personable too. I came in to see holly on Halloween, and per my request, left with HUGE 80s crimped/curled hair to perfectly fit my costume. The salon itself is totally Portland, with brick walls and a large open space. They also have online booking and a good mix of products - R + Co, Davines, and Moroccan Oil to name a few. I first heard about Lucas in Nylon magazine and figured I'd give it a try, having seen too many lazy Portland hairstylists to count. I told Taylor that my only parameter was that I didn't want to go too short and that she otherwise had free reign with my hair. Without hesitation and without making me feel like I was asking too much, she gave me the cut I've always wanted but never knew how to ask for. She also made it clear that if anything about it didn't work for me after a couple of washes, I could come back in to tinker with it. Not that I've needed to! I've been to MANY salons in Portland, and Lucas is by far the best. Shiloh is a wonder - she is extremely talented; her skill is matched by her sense of style and what would look good on me. Most of all - she takes TIME with me. My last stylist at a very popular west side salon would book numerous people at one time, stopping by to cut my hair while someone else washed and styled it. I felt like I was on an assembly line. Shiloh spent 2.5 hours with ME, explaining what she was doing, showing my tricks and just being her sweet self. She is great. The salon itself is perfect. Taylor Lucas is amazing! I hadn't had a real "hair person" in years and had just been getting my hair cut at the local chain place, which was nothing to write home about. Some coworkers of mine recommended nearby Lucas salon and I'm so glad they did! I've been happy with every single cut I've received from Taylor! She is happy to work from a photo if I bring one in, but I also trust her enough that I'm sure if I just said "I need something new and fresh" I would walk out with an amazing cut. She listens very well and is excellent about length - no "I said a trim and walked out with 4 inches chopped off" here - the length is always exactly what we've talked about when I first sit down in the chair. She cut my hair from long to a lob in the fall and I've been going back for updates and a couple inches off every few months. I always love it! I have fine hair and she definitely gets that putting a bunch of layers everywhere (which some stylists always want to do) is NOT the answer. She knows what will work on my hair, and I'd trust her to tell me if an idea I had wasn't going to work well for my hair type. A couple other pluses for Taylor and the salon: she doesn't push products or try to up-sell, the space is gorgeous and comfortable, and the online booking is easy and convenient. I do have to book several weeks/a month in advance, but with the online booking system it's super easy to change or postpone my appointments as needed. I always look forward to my appointments at Lucas and will continue to go there every time I need a fabulous new cut! read more

Taylor Lucas of Lucas Salon is an incredibly talented stylist and an all-around cool lady to spend time with (which is important if you're stuck sitting in a chair for a few hours). She highlights my hair just the way I like it and is always willing to work with me when I want to try new things. She has a great eye for what's going to look good on me and I trust her 100%. Another thing I love about Taylor is that she doesn't try to up-sell. More often than not, you run into stylists who will push products and services on you like no one's business. Not Taylor. Her pricing is very fair and I never walk out of there feeling like I spent money on something I shouldn't have. I also appreciate that she doesn't try to book my appointments so close together just to give herself more business. She's conscious that I'm on a budget and realistic about the fact that I don't need to come in to color my hair every 5 weeks (which most people will tell you that a blonde needs to do - when you really don't!) The quality of her service and her understanding of my needs is what makes me keep coming back to her. I've already referred a few friends and my mom and they all love her too! She's knows what you are talking about when you use clumsy words to describe your style Not only does she listen to you and understand the direction you want to go, but she adds input that exceeds your own ability to see your own style self. She will pull up references from fashion, film, and music, on her iPhone to show you how your own shape could be if you choose a variety of different directions for yourself. At the end of the day, getting your hair cut by Taylor means relaxing because in time you learn to trust that her judgement is truly great for your look, and for becoming your best self. Taylor has been working with famous artists and bands in Los Angeles for years, and because she is a consummate lover of popular culture (indie and beyond), she can't help understanding how your own face, and head shape will best fit into the style matrix of our contemporary world. I am a guy, and I feel completely comfortable with Taylor styling my hair. This place was downright amazing. Shiloh was the best! I am visiting from Seattle and called in an hour ahead of time and they were able to squeeze me in for a trim. The construction of the building was SUPER cool, decoration on the walls, the way they setup each station. Very picture worthy. Although I came an hour early, I gladly waited around and played with my phone using their WiFi, and made myself a drink at their wetbar. Oh yes, they have a wet bar. My hair turned out fantastic. Just had my first visit with Chevonne. After taking the time to talk with me about what I wanted, problems I've had, etc., she did a great job on my color and bang trim. This salon is obviously not for blondes or any professional color treatments. I recently was seen to get a half head highlights for my already blondish hair. I was seen by Tasia (sweet girl but no clue how to really color hair) I left with what was mostly a mediocre job but my highlights were brass/yellow ton and not what I asked for. I then arranged getting a toner to lift the yellow to platinum which we both argued on. Once I left the salon the second time my hair was almost brown with a green tint. Also I might add the stylist sent me with a sown in updo which is obviously not for long hair because it took me almost an hour to untangle it from my hair which left it nappy. So now after all the damage the bleach did to my hair for nothing I now have to waste more time and money to cover this green color up with some sort of light brown which is not at all my hair color. The staff is nice and friendly but I would never trust them to do a real professionals job. If you like the natural nappy look this is your salon. No hard feeling toward the stylist I'm just stating facts. read more

I just went to Lucas for the first time and saw Niki. I wanted a rather dramatic change, and came in looking to get a halfhawk/partial shave. I was nervous about going for it because I work at a law firm and needed the cut to be classy, not trashy. Niki instantly put me at ease, got excited about doing the hair cut and immediately started playing around with parts and options to get me exactly what I wanted. And she nailed it! I LOVE the cut, it looks amazing and classy and exactly how I imagined it in my head. I moved to Portland recently and haven't found a hair dresser who I could trust until now. Initially I was really excited when I found this salon via Yelp and other online reviews. My experience however was lackluster. The salon itself is cool and everyone I met there was nice and accommodating. It is awkward when you get a bad hair service. Maybe they were having a bad day? I don't know. My cut was OK at best and the blowout was one of the worst I have ever had. Ever. I actually had to go home and restyle my hair which was a bummer because I always look forward to leaving a salon with shiny, bouncy hair that is ready to go out on the town. ~sigh~ I guess my quest for a new hair salon continues. read more

When I was in San Francisco, my hair belonged to Lisa Swiss of Hair Candy. (seriously, if you're in the SF area, please see her.) I could sit down in her chair and she knew exactly what to do. However, I am no longer in San Francisco. I found myself in Portland, looking like the love child of Cousin It and a ragamuffin. I was officially in desperate need of a new stylist. Being new to the area and rather particular about who I see, I researched the area and asked a co-worker's wife for recommendations. She suggested Lucas. After reading all the reviews, I decided to go with Shiloh just by a gut reaction. Going to a new person can be tough, but all my anxiety melted away when I walked in to Lucas. The atmosphere is just awesome and makes you feel right at home. And a free cocktail to sip on during your service? Yes please! Shiloh was also immediately welcoming and professional. She knew exactly how to handle my heavy hair and transform it back to a light voluminous style that I was so accustomed to. She listened to exactly what I wanted and gave me her advice and two cents...which was more than welcome. Her personality is so charming and laid back that you find yourself gabbing away unaware of the time past. In addition to her amazing haircuts, I now have her do my color. My recent dye job has gotten so many compliments! I've now been seeing her for about a year, and I can officially say that I will plop down in her chair, and let her work her magic without really needing to say anything! I highly recommend Shiloh! I was waiting for my hair to grow out a little before I had another haircut to fix it. Tasia is so good at what she does! Showed her a pic of what I wanted and that's exactly what I got! In the past 9 months, I had been to 4 different salons, on 5 different occasions, and seen 4 different stylists. I had told every single one of them the same thing: "I want to be blonde". None of them seemed to be able to do it. After much hesitation and grow-out of my roots I decided to walk into Lucas. I had been told by a friend that they knew what they were doing. I brought a picture as I had to the previous salons and asked if what I wanted could be done. Without a pause, the stylist said it could easily be done and we set up an appointment. I was still nervous on the day of my appointment but Shiloh quickly began applying product to my roots and talking to me about the process. After about 30 minutes or so, we rinsed and I could already tell me roots were lighter then anyone had made them at the previous salons. Precise highlights and a few hours later, I had the beautiful blonde I'd been trying to get the whole time. They obviously have had thorough training and know what they're doing, I just wish I had found them sooner and hadn't wasted my money at the other places! This is just a warning.If I can help one person from being ripped off and mistreated it will be worth it.I went in the first time and Amy did a really great job.When I booked my second appointment I was told the owner,Taylo was excellent at color correction.I walked in & she did not really ask what I wanted.I should have been more specific when I brought it up because she took a hank of hair from the right in back ,foil down she put what seemed like bleach on a wide swath of bleach,more foil then under heat for 20 minutes.Just what my damaged hair did'nt need.I'm sleeping in conditioner and I guess bleach wasn't a good idea but I'm a trusting sort.After the hair was washed and blown out she was really rude while styling my hair.It's long & my husband loves it with a deep side part and just full.Having alot of hair helps with the look.But Taylor got a big laugh at my old fashoned style..mockingly making a remark about my taste.This is where the real big warning comes in.SHE DID A $75.00 JOB But charged me $250.00.I even gave her a large tip but it didn't help.I went back one more time,same thing EXACTLY.I overheard her call me the client with 6 inches of ugly damaged hair!This is a bad business plan.I even drove 3 hours to see her.I hope she gets over her blatent ageism & cruel attitude.Sorry I'm not as cool as you but I really felt someone needed to put her in her place.When I got home I just cried because there was no change in my hair & I felt old & out of touch. read more

Ok so I has booked an appointment at a different salon before getting to portland and after reading yelp I had a bad feeling about it. I then called here and got Shiloh on the phone. I showed up earlier than she offered since my husband had me on a schedule. She was able to fit me in and offered to get me started about 20 minutes after my arrivial for my color. It is very pretty. I wasn't sure about getting my cut but she reminded me I needed one. I like it just thought my final blow dry could have had a little more wow factor. It is nice just not a lot oomph. Just had my bangs trimmed here and loved the entire experience. Shiloh spent some time talking with me beforehand and talked me into a new style. I love it! She was meticulous and took her time making sure she got it right, which I appreciate. Before her I had been to a few other stylists in Portland and was not impressed b/c they all seemed to rush through the cut, leaving me with a mediocre haircut at best.
