Floated the wilderness area of the Rogue River with guides from Briggs out of Merlin, OR. Wildfire blew up after we started on the raft trip. Guides were very professional getting us down stream. Due to fire had to evacuate to Lucas Lodge. They handled unplanned arrival of 16 guest the first night and a second group of 20 the next night. The Lucas Lodge response was fantastic. Best Chartreuse appetizers I have ever had. Fried chicken and steak for dinner. My husband said it was the best food he has had at a restaurant in years. My family and I stayed here and had an amazing time! Jennifer,who runs Lucas Lodge, made sure we had everything we needed and went out of her way to make sure we had a great time and felt very welcomed. It was a great experience for our kids - it felt like we stepped back in time to a slower pace. We enjoyed hiking around property, fishing and swimming in river. Jennifer also cooked amazing meals during our stay- we were well fed. We had eggs benedict for breakfast and fried chicken for dinner. The rooms were spacious and decorated nicely. We loved the porch in the evenings where we played board games and enjoyed each other's company. Definitely a highlight on our trip and would love to visit again soon! read more

We spent three nights here this month and definitely will be back. Jennifer, the proprietor, truly goes out of her way to make your meals and your stay as terrific as possible. Read this review, however. It's not a 5 star hotel - so know what you're getting when you reserve. As far as the cabins, they are well decorated with plenty of sleeping area. No "living room" as both rooms are made up as bedrooms. But some have a full kitchen, others a microwave and fridge. Each has a balcony out front to enjoy the scenery. These are rustic type cabins, so there is no TV. They do have electric, but don't expect phone or internet while you're here. You can expect wildlife and outdoors activities though. We made our reservations by phone. Call back if you get the machine - there's not a bunch of employees there and those that are can be busy working in the kitchen. When we reserved our room, we also reserved dinner. She DID ASK about any allergies or preferences when we booked, in contrast to a previous reviewer's rating. The meals were FABULOUS. No, there's not a menu - it's chef's choice. But if you have a preference, ask in advance and she will do what she can to accommodate you. We had three dinners. They are served family style with a salad of some type, main course (fried chicken, ribs and tri-tip were served on our nights) and sides. Our sides included corn, string beans, squash, as well as a starch like mashed potatoes with gravy option. Home made biscuits or bread are served, one day with an amazing caramelized topping. Dessert was cobbler and ice cream. There was more than enough food for everyone eating and everything had a homemade touch. Lemonade and water was served, or you could bring your own. We didn't ask for anything different. Jennifer and her team served meals for as few as 10 people and as many as 150 while we were there, and we didn't hear any complaints. She works real hard to make sure everyone is happy. The area is very out of the way. Agness is about an hour from Gold Beach and there is nothing here except a couple of lodges, an RV park and one bar / grill type restaurant. There's not a lot to do if you're not into hiking, nature watching, fishing or hanging out at the river. The Agness general store is closed right now so bring your supplies with you. The ranch itself is kind of cool. It's set up almost B&B style with your own cabin. There are board games if you have children and a living room sitting area should you choose to use it. It has an airport with a grass strip, a small lake with an old boat and car around it for decoration. It borders the Rogue River with a dock below and a rocky beach is also part of the property. There's a meadow in the center where you can look up and see the stars every night. The Gold Beach clouds don't often make it up this far and the nights were beautiful. The website could use some updating. They don't do rooms any more, just full cabins, and the rates have gone up. It was a bit confusing when we got there, as there is no "welcome" sign or anything and you feel like you're going into someone's living room. Overall, this is a great experience. It was clean, nice, friendly and the food was great. They were wonderful with our daughter allowing her to help out with clearing the table. Jennifer is working real hard to make sure everyone is taken care of. We will definitely return to this lovely ranch. read more

They're on the 7th generation of family ownership and it shows! What a terrific place. I last stayed there 60 years ago (I live quite a distance away) but it will be a very short time before I return for the great presence, service, amazing food and restful ambience. Do not miss out on this spot! If you are in or around Gold Beach, OR make the drive to Agness or hop on a jetboat and let someone else do the driving. Either way, get here, because the food is hands down the best! I have had the pleasure of visiting Lucas Lodge about a dozen times over the last 3 years, while guiding tour groups on trips through the Oregon Coast. Not only are the folks at Lucas Lodge easy to work with, they know good food. This is a family owned lodge that goes back generations in the area. Remember to pay in advance- one flat rate for your entire meal, and prices differ for kids and adults. In general, you will pay about $20-25 per person including tax and tip, but trust me, it is worth it. On a sunny day, you can park it under a grape vine that has to be older than my grandma while you wait for your meal, sun yourself on the meadow, or play a little badminton. There are some fun photo opps like old equipment and a row of overalls hanging on a line, but when the dinner bell rings get your booty in your seat cause it is about to get crazy. Lucas Lodge has two seating areas. One is a screened porch with 3 large tables and the other is outdoors; I believe it has 3-4 large tables as well. Both are fine, but on a hot day or a rainy day head for the screened area if you can. Cooking is done in the kitchen and dining area of the old house, and the living room is used as a waiting area with a piano, a variety of games, and memorabilia to check out. Bathrooms are outdoors, separate buildings with full plumbing for each gender. There are also two bathrooms inside the lodge if you have mobility problems or the others are full. For lunch or dinner, you will notice several folks (usually younger folks, but sometimes the owner assists as well) bringing out bowl after bowl of food, in addition to fresh lemonade and iced tea. The strange thing is that the bowls keep coming! They will even ask you if there is a specific dish or piece of chicken that you want and have not had yet. Lucas Lodge serves meals family style, so you will pass the peas and say thank you and please and you will quite possibly meet a few new folks if your party is small enough to fit at one of the large tables with another. You will see biscuits that are homemade (as everything else is)- make sure to try them with the homemade blackberry jam at your table. You will see a variety of garden fresh veggies, mashed potatoes, and oh my God the chicken! The fried chicken here is amazing. Occasionally they will add a second protein to change it up (I have seen ribs on occasion or salmon), but in general you are going to Lucas Lodge for some awesome, crunchy, diet killing fried chicken. For dessert enjoy vanilla ice cream with fresh blueberry sauce on top. If you have vegetarians or special dietary needs in your party call ahead- they are really accommodating. You can also get coffee for no extra charge if you ask for it- again, the people here are really nice and they will do whatever they can to make you feel welcome. We stopped on our Jerry's Rogue River Jet Boat Tours for dinner...there was no one to greet us, and no signs to direct us (fortunately we'd been there before and knew where to go). They rudely told us we were waiting in the wrong spot...then the manager refused to take our money and said that we would have to wait outside in the heat for 10 minutes before she'd even take our money. Sean, our jet boat tour guide told us to be sure to tell them that they needed to serve us right away and not wait for the next boat to come in and serve us together. He knew what he was talking about. When we finally convinced them that serving us right away was what they needed to do, they finally seated us. They served family style a very delicious "down home" meal of cucumber salad, cole slaw (both satisfactory), homemade biscuits (yummy) with a mound of butter like substance, really delicious corn on the cob, green beans with bacon, wonderful fried chicken (who ever cooks that at home any more). And for dessert, vanilla bean ice cream with a homemade black berry sauce. As soon as we finished eating we hiked back to the boat dock and waited only 7 minutes for the boat. I'm not sure what we would have done if we had not insisted on not waiting to be served, they had only just started to serve the other boat when we left! read more

We took a jet boat trip and ended up with a group that booked dinner here. If you have food allergies or are vegetarian you will be greatly disappointed. I will say the service was good. The food however was not. I only had a small amount of salad and water because we weren't given choices. Ribs. Mashed potatoes. Canned corn and for dessert ice cream. Not much to choose from for someone who is vegetarian and allergic to dairy. Although I didn't have anything but a salad I was charged for a full meal. 22.50. They were not understanding at all so I paid for a full meal. I would never recommend this place or go back. read more

OMG! can't believe no one has reviewed this yet! We took a vacation to Brookings Oregon and wanted to do a boat tour on the Rogue River.We ended up deciding to go with Jerry's rogue river jet boats (great decision it was SOOO fun, wet and REALLY PRETTY!!) and they let us pick from like 3 places to go stop for lunch that were right off of the river. one was a buffet,second one was lucas lodge and the other was like a sandwich shop. it was explained to us that lucas lodge was "family style" like the samoa cookhouse (they're great too=) so we decided on that one and OOOOh MAAAAH GAAAAWWWSH!! everything was TO DIE FOR! gravy, pan fried chicken was, dare i say it, it was actually better than mine. the best!!! vegetables were fresh from the garden! mashed potatoes were good too. and the biscuits!!don't even get me started on the biscuits! theyre not as good as my grandma's ( you haven't tasted biscuits unless you've tasted hers) but the're a close second! and there's a honey glaze on the biscuits that is SOO good! this place gets a 100/10!! dessert wasn't anything special, but WHO CARES!?! after a meal like that? ambience is super cute inside the house and you eat outside in a big long picnic table outside=) really pretty over there too=D read more

This is the place to stop for lunch on your jetboat ride. The meal was fantastic, lemonade, lots of fresh vegetables, homemade biscuits, mashed potatoes, gravy and Ice cream with blackberry sauce to end the meal. I enjoyed sitting at the big table passing the food around and talking with people as if they were family members, it has a nice home atmosphere. Read the reviews and decided this was the place and for 24.00 it cant get any better. This is 7th generation of the family owned lodge you eat family style on an screened porch, which is nice as you can visit and get to know the people from your tour/boat, the table is filled with plates of THE BEST fried chicken, local veggies, corn, green beans, coleslaw, beets, cucumbers an tomatoes. Plates of bbq pork ribs and real homemade yummy biscuits mashed potatoes an gravy. If you still have room as you can eat all you want, there is vanilla ice cream with a homemade berry sauce, If your in Agness or doing the jet-boat tour, Don't miss dining here. read more

we went to stay at Lucas Lodge this summer... WOW.. IT WAS FILTHY AND HAD MOUSE POOP IN THE CABIN ALL OVER THE FLOORS. WE TOOK OUR BABY AND COUNDNT EVEN LET HER PLAY ... I opened drawers to put clothes in and there was a mouse nest and 3 DEAD baby mice in the drawer. Sitting on the front porch we noticed more poo.... only now it was from BAT infested rafters and bats poured out of the porch at twilight.. HUNDREDS of them. One of the reviews is written by the girl that worked the front desk.... oh and the front desk called me 4 times asking me to pay... I paid on check in and gave them the info to clear it up 3 times!!! what a joke!!! The scenery was beautiful, but will NEVER stay there again NEVER!!! BIG waste of $$ (I realize Im in the woods and expect country living,,, but the poop was awful, we cleaned the entire first night) ooh and the hide a bed wasnt made, they gave US the sheets to make it ourselves...really!! read more

Our room was accidentally given to somebody else so we were upgraded to a cottage which had lots of character. With two in our party, we definitely has lots of space. Everything was old but clean-- as can be expected from a place that had been running since 1910. It is in a beautiful area. read more

All is true that has already been mentioned. My friends and family stopped on a Jet Boat trip about 20 years ago (twice) and I was determined to go back to Lucas Lodge as a guest in one of the cabins. Needless to say, my husband and I stayed at the "Riverview" cabin last year and loved it so much we are going back this month to stay in "Frankie's Cabin" - the hospitality extends beyond the fried chicken and biscuits and family style dining. As a guest at the lodge (or cabin) you are welcomed as if you are one of the family. You can experience special home-cooked meals, freedom to roam the property or hike the trails, swim in the river, or meet and talk to friendly local folks under the shade tree at the little Agnes store. It is busy when jet boats come in for lunch and dinner, but otherwise peaceful and serene. The river is a short walk from the lodge/cabin, and we had opportunities to view wildlife daily (including skunk, raccoon, various birds, bear). --And a couple of beautiful labrador retrievers. The staff were friendly, and the lodging was very affordable and homey. We are so excited to go back and look forward to seeing our old friends.
