I'd like to share another positive update about my experiences at Lu Ross Academy. Since my initial visit on Jan. 2, 2026 for a complex hair color correction, I've returned two more times for additional services. During my second visit, based on Instructor Holly's recommendation, I received highlights -and I left pleasantly surprised and very happy with the results. Most recently, on April 8, 2026, I went for my first touch-up, and I'm extremely pleased with how my hair looks now. I'm especially grateful for Holly's clear guidance to her student, Anne, who did an excellent job on my highlights touch-up. The level of care and instruction really shows in the final results. I truly appreciate the services at Lu Ross -it's a win-win situation where students gain valuable hands-on experience, and clients leave feeling satisfied and confident. Lu Ross Academy Client Services - My new hair style. - Hair Salons Near Me - Ventura, California

I was feeling adventurous so I scheduled an appointment for a hair trim and blow dry. Keep in mind this was my first time after using the same stylist at my usual salon for over 20 years and just happened to miss my appt with her. So I was feeling a little anxious about this and rightfully so. Setting the appt had to be done online so you can't really ask questions. Upon raring I was told my stylist hadn't shown up but they would find someone. After waiting about 10 mins they took be to a chair and I was met by a very shy, young new student. I knew it was possible to be someone's first cut but I didn't really think it would be me. She was so nervous and I kept having to tell her it was ok if she pulled my hair to just get in there while shampooing. She ended up needing help from 2 instructors who ended up finishing the trim. In total it took 3 hours for a basic trim and blow dry. That's a long time but keep in mind these are students and the cut only cost $15! A bargain if you're willing to risk it. The cut turned out well. The vibe was very beauty school. Just don't have any expectations when you go and you'll be alright. read more

I went in on Friday, made a appointment over the phone with Victoria. Got me in right away, appointment was at 11:00am did not get seen till 11:20 am. In addition the young gentleman I believe his name was Giovanni. Everything was going ok, however his scissors fell on my face! As he was blow drying my hair. I get it there learning and accidents happen. However that could have went bad really quick. Shampoo, deep condition, and blow dry and cut. Was very economic I tip him, more than what the service was worth. But base on that experience. I don't think I will go there again. Safety and training needs to be Address in a area of improvement. read more

Thanks Lu Ross & Student Tabitha for great Highlights on my recent Birthday visit. What a Sweetheart! Well woven in Highlights with my natural dirty blonde hair (in a complimentary tint I picked out), I was surprised at how well my mature student handled the end-of-the-day assignment on a TIGHT DEADLINE for my Birthday Dinner. Professional Teacher-Supervisor buzzed around often, keeping a close eye on us, making me feel secure & well cared for. Price was unbelievably reasonable! I've paid a lot more money before for a lot less satisfaction from local "Professionals "@ big name salons. VERY HAPPY, I will continue to go back to Lu Ross Academy again & again! One question.= Minus 1 star: WHY does this school stay in it's ancient rundown building (with obvious parking problems) on Thompson Blvd., while the nearby "Barbering School" has beautiful newly-renovated facilities in old bank building next to a public parking structure? Don't your long-time faithful Female Customers & $17,000+ tuition-paying Female Students deserve BETTER DIGS? You have to be patient if you come to the barber school because sometimes it takes a long time; sometimes it's speedy, though. There is no way of telling ahead of time. Sometimes you get a brand new students, and sometimes you get someone who is a pro and is about to graduate. So you have to be willing to roll the dice. But. . .hair cuts are only $5 and usually they are great. You really can't find a better deal in town. Even with a tip you are walking out for $10 or less. When I sit down in the chair I always give the same description of what I want and I almost always come out with a slightly different cut. This is good if you are flexible. If you have super specific requirements and expectations it may not be the place for you. read more

Its my first time coming here for beauty services. I went yesterday for the express facial, worth the $10.00. I came back today for a full acrylic nail set. The whole set took nearly 3 hours to complete. I rate the final product 7.5 out of 10. For only $15.00 I can't really complain. Customer service/professionalism could be improved. Major hit or miss. The students are not very professional. They will sit around and complain right in front of you! I think they need to be supervised better... they say very inappropriate things in front of customers. Some of the students rush thru the services and do a bad job intentionally- they just don't care. Others love what they are doing and make sure you are satisfied the whole time. I left there once after a blow out (wash and dry), and still had shampoo in my scalp. They also put a ton of product in my hair I said I didnt want (gel, moose, hairspray). The facials are also hit and miss... I've had amazing ones and some really miserable ones. Pedicures are done in cheap plastic containers. With the receptionist- the prices are always different.. I am not sure why that is. I think this school needs a major face lift and more student supervision. All students should be required to take a class on how to interact with customers and how to be professional! read more

This place is great the students are amazing, but its unfortunate that the school lacks the appropriate equipment to help the students work efficiently. When i went to get my hair done there was only one working sink in the whole place, and there was about 4 people in line waiting to get dye or even bleach rinsed out of their hair. These students pay a lot to go here and people pay to get their hair done, they should make sure the place is fully operable. read more

I have been here many times to get my simple straight hair trimmed an inch or two. I have also had them cut bangs once... Never had a problem. My only complaint in the past has been that the students are pretty unprofessional in their behavior, gossiping about other students loudly etc.. But my last visit, last week, was a NIGHTMARE. The student who "trimmed" my shoulder length hair into a chin-length mess was extremely sloppy in her attire and attitude. When you are going into the fashion industry, why would you dress sloppy? When I sat down, she didn't even adjust the chair so that I could see myself and her in the mirror. I sat there talking to my forehead until I finally said, "You know I can't see you or myself in the mirror, right?"--to which she replied, "Oh, I'll raise the chair in a minute.." Why "in a minute"? By the end of the haircut, I wish she had left it down so I wouldn't have had to witness the massacre of my poor hair. The instructor came by and I told her I wanted a shoulder length trim. By the way, the instructor was also dressed and groomed sloppily. She bent my head forward and began cutting hair at the nape of my neck. When I realized what was going on I told her I did not want an A-line or a severe angle (where did she get the idea I did?). She then told the student they would have to cut from the front to lessen the severity of the angle. While she hacked away, the other students in the small room draped themselves in chairs and gossiped--one of them actually screamed loudly when she got her exam scores. Fine--but isn't the school teaching professionalism at all? Cutting to the chase, as it were, I wound up sick to my stomach looking at my chin-length mess of a hairdo. I asked the student if she needed to show an instructor her work (they usually call the instructor who will check them off and make any necessary adjustments to the cut). The student said, "No, that's fine. I'll walk you to the door." I am not exaggerating when I tell you what a disaster this haircut is--layered in places--not layered in others--uneven; helmutlike... Each of my friends who said, "Oh I bet it's not that bad" over the phone, said "Oh my God" when they saw the cut in person. Something has changed at that school--it is like a free-for-all, the students appear to just be left to play-around without supervision. The actual school is also dirty... Wow--I am so sorry, but I will never support them again.... what a joke. read more

I had the "Body Works" treatment today at Lu Ross and it was really great! You start lying face down for a back facial (exfoliating, cleansing, and a mask on your back), followed by a light foot rub while the mask sets and ends with an aromatherapy facial. It lasts 90 minutes and costs only $50 + tip. It's been a while since I've been to Lu Ross for a facial. I felt SO good when I walked out! A comparable service at a spa would cost at least double, if not more. I can't give it 5 stars because it is just so loud and chaotic in the building but I am definitely a fan. My esthetician (Paige) was wonderful. She gave great mini-massages on my neck, shoulders, and arms while my face mask was setting and made me feel very comfortable and relaxed. Sitting at home now a few hours later my skin is so smooth and soft. Recommend! read more

I love this place. I really really do. I've been going here for almost 6 years off and on. I currently drive in from LA to keep coming here since I have never had a bad cut or color/ waxing. Since these are students you NEED to know what you want, and you need to be able to speak up and tell them what you want. If they don't know how to do it, they'll get an instructor to help them. Nothing worse then someone not speaking up during a haircut and then getting upset afterwards! Tell them exactly what you want, and you'll get it. I recently had to come here again after trying out a 'proper' salon where my hair got completely ruined by bleach. Lu Ross fixed it, colored it, cut, and had me walk out with a gorgeous post salon straightening and confidence boost. Not to mention, the whole treatment, plus buying some amazing product for myself at reception, was still cheaper then the salon that had messed up my hair before. I still continue to go here and suggest friends to do the same. read more

I LOVE THIS PLACE! I recently moved to Ventura and I feel so lucky to have found Lu Ross. I have super curly hair and it takes me FOREVER to blow dry it and straighten it. (No, seriously... close to 2 hours!) So instead, I have been going in to Lu Ross to get it blown out. (I have gone in for color once, loved the outcome- but had one of the instructors working on me.) It is usually 15$ for a wash/cut/blow dry/straighten. (At a normal salon they would charge me 120$ because my hair is so curly!!) My color was a little more expensive, but still only 45$ for all over. (And I gotta lotta hair!) You don't really need an appointment, as long as you come in before 2pm they can take you. (If your getting color I believe it's 12pm) The girls are all very friendly and talkative, it is actually pretty fun to watch most of them hard at work on mannequins or gossiping across chairs and stations. The salon itself can be a little intimidating because there are so many girls (and a few boys) compacted into rows of work stations but it kinda made me want to go to beauty school. Surely, your experience will depend on who you are assigned to (I know you can request stylists but if not you are randomly assigned to one.) My first time in I had Amber and she did a great job. She knew how to deal with my curly mess and didn't put too much product in to deal with it. There is no doubt in my mind I'll be in again! read more

I have gone to Lu Ross on several occasions and I've always enjoyed my experience there. I was just there last week and had another amazing experience. There is a new instructor names Michael who assisted the student cutting my hair. He was knowledgeable and answered question and even demonstrated techniques to her and even other students who where in our area that did not have guests at the time. He's a great asset to the school for sure. And I am looking forward to returning again! Keep in mind this is a school. These are student and services provided sometimes take longer or require assistance from instructors. read more

I highly recommend this school! I have gone to this school for waxing, manicures, & pedicures- fabulous! I went in for my hair-perfect for people with straight hair or thin hair. Not a good fit for individuals with ethnic hair, not sure about Asian hair. The instructors are good with hair that is straight or Caucasian but no knowledge of diverse hair structures or types. So they are not able to help their students to learn how to work with diverse groups. Waxing, manicure, or pedicure? They are top notch! I've been coming to Lu Ross for many years. It's hard to rate though because some things are good and others not so good. Bodyworks ($50) is wonderful, relaxing, and completely enjoyable. Only issue I have is they squeezed a lot more people into the room than before. Also laughter and noise from students can be heard from the hall which is completely distracting. Haircuts have always been pretty good. Nothing to write home about but if you need a trim, why pay $40 you do so. I believe it's around $8 here. Coloring I did not have great success with. Had you go back to get it fixed. But they did do it for free. Pros: Price, ease of getting an appt, students and receptionist are nice. Cons: Kind of hectic in the hair cutting area, noise near the aesthetic areas, not for the modest, hit and miss on hair services. But you have to remember it's a school and not meant to be a spa. That's why you're not paying full price. read more

If you are Black, Afro American or of African descent and live in the Oxnard area, you have to try Cortney at Lu Ross Academy. She is an amazing stylist and a wiz with the flat iron. There aren't many stylist in the area who work on curly hair but she is excellent. read more

I have been coming to the Lu Ross Academy for a haircut since about May of this year. My friend is a student and has been giving me excellent cuts, the cuts are so well done she has replaced my regular salon. Today I came in for a cut and right after she started washing my hair they made her leave due to a pattern on her sweater. Now, I understand dress code however she removed her sweater & they still made her leave. Keep in mind my hair is currently WET from JUST beginning a wash. She sent her friend over to me to finish which I was fine with but then they sent her home TOO! IN THE MIDDLE OF MY WASH! She offered to remove the sweater that had violate their dress code but apparently it was too late. What type of school cares more about dress code than their client? If I wasn't a friend of my stylist I would hope they would have just let her finish! It was not only rude, but unprofessional of the instructors. However , one instructor did offer me a free deep conditioning in order to save my experience. So that's the 1 plus here. Otherwise I just feel bad for my friend and her classmates for how they were treated today! I am only giving 2 stars because of how well my stylist cuts my hair. read more

The hair cut is cheap, the experience is poor along with the quality of cut. All I came in to get was my head shaved, same length all around. The young lady did the worst job. After she finished I went home and finished the job myself. What a disappointment, can't even shave a head. Never going back there again. read more

I just called a few minutes ago to try to schedule an appointment with the esthetician. The student (God, I hope that was a student) at the phone was not familiar with the services listed on the website. She also had a horrible phone presentation. Her tone was extremely rude and she acted like she wanted you off the phone as soon possible. Extremely bad training. If I were a salon owner searching for talent, I would expect Lu Ross graduates to know how to answer the phones in a professional manner. The instructors are seriously dropping the ball if they are not preparing students for the real business world. read more

I came here for a haircut, after calling the morning of to see if there were any openings. Much to my surprise, someone was available to cut my hair immediately! And for only $5! This was my first visit and it was very positive. I had a haircut and blow dry from Roxy, a lovely and ambitious young lady. It was such a pleasure to meet someone her age with such poise and passion for her craft. She did a great haircut and a superb blow dry. I will go back and request her again in the future. I brought an older gentleman with me for a pedicure. Sylvia took extra time with him aided by her instructor. I received an aromatherapy facial from Mia this morning and it was fantastic! She did an amazing job, my skin is super soft and she got the knot out of my shoulder. The room facials are done in is fairly quiet/relaxing, however noise from the neighboring rooms/halls can be heard clearly in the facial room, which is a bummer. I will definitely be back! read more

Horrible communication , and even more horrible students ! Very rude and unprofessional , I over heard one of the girls saying some pretty rude hurtful things about me but I bit my lip because there young girls , but then it just got even ruder and ruder to the point I was very uncomfortable but I sat thur because I had a wedding I needed my hair done for that afternoon , and because all this I was there for 2 hours just to get my hair curled ! I asked to to leave my hair pinned cus it goes flat quickly , well when I got home to remove pins they where just jammed into my hair I couldn't get them out without pulling my hair out as well finally I got someone to help remove them and my hair was a mess ! We tried to fix it which made me late to my event , I will say this some students seemed nice gave a smile as you walked by but other and probably 80 percent of them stare at you with judging eyes , I will personally never go back there ! read more
