I'm honestly a little mystified at the strong reviews this place is getting. I've been here twice…read morein the course of a week and don't plan on coming back. I came by most recently yesterday (a Sunday) in the mid-afternoon with two of my top-tier chums for a post-movie late lunch. As an aside, Sunday afternoon to me is pretty much dictionary definition Italian dinner so I would expect Popolari's best for that. I hope for their sake that's not what we got. This is a bit of an odd spot for a restaurant. This area of Little Falls is unrecognizable compared to a few years ago, and it's not really a walkable area - the downtown area is probably 15-20 minutes away by foot, and Popolari is undoubtedly benefiting primarily from the insane number of condos/townhouses that have cropped up across the street (which is making day-to-day traffic a nightmare, but that's not their fault - that's probably on Mayor Damiano and his aggressive building up of the town without doing the same for the basic infrastructure surrounding it). The parking situation here is pretty rough - there's literally four spots out front with seating for significantly more than that inside, so I would imagine most people are either foregoing sit-down and getting takeout, or just parking on the street within the block or so. Pretty cozy spot. I'm not trying to be insulting, but in a lot of ways this felt like a by-the-slice, calzones, etc. type of pizza place masquerading as a bougie Montclair Italian restaurant. It has an Italian car propped outside and some cool Euro 60s shizzle on the walls. It was pretty empty when we showed up and we had our pick of spacious booths to the side. My one chum who came with me both times commented that it feels more comfortable at night, which I would agree with. I opted for the Vodka Chicken Parm on the lunch specials menu (one of my fave dishes/specialty pizzas). It was just okay. Not particularly flavorful and it was clearly reheated like a slice of pizza would be, so the high temp overwhelmed the profile, which was a shame. I had some pasta left over and just didn't waste the calories on it. Worse than that though was the Creme Brulee I had for dessert. Honestly the worst I've had. From what I tasted, it was literally just Jell-O pudding (and it might have been the off-brand of that) with a very thick, cheap sugar layer on top. The temperature of the pudding (this was not the custard it should have been, for sure) varied dramatically bite to bite; it should have been cool but parts of it were randomly hot presumably from inexperienced sugar torching. I'm very surprised an Italian restaurant would push out a substandard product like that. The service was friendly but also not the best. Our waiter (we had the same one both times) was very nice and knowledgeable about the menu. But - and this to me is likely on management more than him specifically - he didn't know to bring our food out at the same time, which is pretty much hospitality 101. This happened during both visits, where someone got their food and then awkwardly waited between five to 10 minutes for the other plates to arrive. And within this one specific meal, it happened for both the entrees and the desserts. It's a shame. The price point to me is pretty competitive, and it's a convenient location for me. But when the service and the food just aren't very good, it's tough to justify giving this place another shot. I have to assume the original Bloomfield location is significantly better.

We were at the opening of the Montclair Film Festival, so the earliest we could get there was 9:30. after a couple of really good Apps, we had the Chicken Parm which was very good but somewhat dry. The portion is big and well worth the $29 but there was no sauce on the plate. I asked the waitress for some extra sauce on the side and she told me the kitchen was cleaning up and she couldn't get it for me. I asked her to please double check and she was not happy at all, bigtime dirty look. Within 1 minute she was back with the sauce, I'm guessing it was not too difficult for her to get. We also asked for some extra bread and she told me it was to late they ran out, which I'm doubting based on her answer to my sauce request. Seemed they were rushing to get out because it was late. If they couldn't handle a my requests they should not take a reservation for so late. I will go back because the food was good however, I hope the service and attitude is better.

The restaurant was packed when we arrived, with both indoor and outdoor dining, but they were expecting us for our reservation and seated us right away. The front-of-house staff was warm, friendly and even remembered my husband from when he called to make the reservation. The food was the standout. I ordered the short rib, which arrived with quite the presentation, a huge bone topped with incredibly tender, shaved short rib and mixed vegetables. It was delicious and the portion was enormous. I shared some with my husband at dinner, took the rest home, and we still managed to turn the leftovers into an omelet a couple of days later! My husband ordered the double-thick pork chop and loved it. We also shared the fried shrimp and calamari appetizer, and both the marinara and aioli were excellent. One small area for improvement would be helping the younger waitstaff become a little more comfortable guiding guests through the menu. When we asked for recommendations and what dishes the restaurant was especially known for, it took a little prompting before we got to Parmigiano. Our server was perfectly nice. It just would have elevated the experience to have someone confidently say, "This is what we do exceptionally well, and here's what I recommend." Overall, though, we had exactly the kind of evening we needed. We brought a bottle of wine, relaxed, talked, enjoyed the atmosphere and genuinely felt like we had gotten away for a while. Our bill came in at the $100 range, and we left completely satisfied. Great food, generous portions, a welcoming atmosphere and excellent value. We'll absolutely return.

We started off with some fantastic and delicious appetizers, including a variety of homemade potato pizza (really good), prosciutto and mozzeralla, bruschetta, eggplant caponata, plus fruit and a variety of other tasty treats. The entrees (all served family style) including pappardelle with sausage in cream sauce, chicken francese, grilled shrimp over bracolli rabe and fusilli with vodka sauce. Amazing meal and Rosa and family could not have been nicer. Rosa's is a BYOB and there is street parking only. It is located less than a mile away from the Willowbrook Mall. By request, there was not too much meat served tonight because of the religious holiday (ash Wednesday). We ended the meal with some Italian pastries, a celebratory cake commemorating the occasion and tartufo. A great evening with long time friends and good food. Interesting note about Rosa's Italian Restaurant and Caterer. This restaurant is not generally open to the public. It is not a walk in restaurant. If you would like to come to Rosa's you have to pre-schedule your dinner in advance with at least 8 or more people (up to 40 according to Rosa) and Rosa will accommodate you. You can discuss selected entrees if you like but generally the meal will consist of the dishes that Rosa is making that day. That meal will consist of a large variety of great dishes prepared for your group and served family style. This is a very cool dining experience in a old school Italian neighborhood restaurant. There's just something about them that you can't recreate. Yesterday, my buddies and I were supposed to hit The Belmont Tavern, but they were closed for the week. Rather than scrap the plan, we pivoted to Matthew's Italian Restaurant at the suggestion of one of the guys in the crew. What a great find. We were pleasantly surprised that an old school spot like this had somehow escaped us all these years. The atmosphere was exactly what we were looking for, the staff was awesome, and most importantly, the food delivered. We came out swinging with Clams Oreganata, Meatballs, Stuffed Mushrooms, Mozzarella Carrozza, and two different types of Ravioli. Needless to say, the table filled up pretty quickly.
