This is my current home town Walmart. Before moving to Canon I never went into Walmart. I hated it…read more BUT here in Canon if we didn't have it, we would have to drive an hour to either Pueblo or Colo Springs to get stuff. This one is fine. It is mostly neat and well kept. They took out 80% of their manned cashier lanes and put in TONS of self check lanes (which, honestly I don't mind). I have gotten vaccinations at the Pharmacy and their staff is always friendly, but the Pharmacy always has a long line no matter when I go. And if you make an appointment for a vaccine know that it means nothing, they will do it when they have time (which is often and hour after you made the appointment). They do work hard and are professional, just a little understaffed. Bakery does good work. I have ordered cakes there and they always turn out well and taste great (love the whipped icing). The grocery pick up is the only thing that I would give 1 star. I have had them not bag items and just throw them in the back of my truck!? Twice I got home and found that the cleaning solution I bought didn't have the lid on tight and poured all over my groceries and bed of truck - they did refund all damaged food. And they have tons of problems with their "system" or so they say. I have had orders not ready on time (and ready hours later). Also have checked in to pick up after getting a "your order is ready for pick up" and had to wait 30+ minutes. I actually had to stop using it, it was so bad. So it is what it is. Mostly fine!

There could be another sign or two advertising the place, however, Google Maps will lead you strait to it. A very nice Amish woman laughed at my cowboy's jokes and asked me if I was related to another local. To my knowledge, I am not! Lol. The parking lot was gravel with unmarked spaces. A sleepy dog with wavy yellowish-brown hair greeted us gently, but immeditely went back to snoozing. Inside the semi-dusty country store was a surprising amount of everything one could possibly need in a pinch: + dried beans and pastas + nuts and all the baking goods + pie filling + canned goods + household supplies + personal hygiene items + cold drinks and snacks + cat/dog commodities I picked up a jar of locally-made blackberry jam, apple cider vinegar, and drinks for the kids all for under $13. Keep in mind that items like dented canned goods and some smashed packaged items are sold with deep discounts. They do not sell much meat aside from the canned variety. I paid cash for our items, but they do accept plastic. I will definitely be here in the future. TIP The store is open daily except on Sunday 9AM-5PM. Also, their bakery is open only a few days of the week which we sadly missed out on.

I think their prices are quite reasonable given that you're 50 miles away from any kind of established town. The real treasure here is the meat department. They carry absolutely exquisite grass-fed locally raised meat that is impossible to beat at one of the conventional supermarkets. My daughters have been living in the cabin over the summer (2023), and they go down to the Mercantile almost every day and bring back really good food. CRESTONE would be essentially completely barren if it wasn't for CRESTONE Mercantile and Crestone Hardware, owned by the same people. (There is another market called Elephant Cloud, but I think it caters more to vegetarian preferences.) We are are glad to have this business in this community. I wish there was more economic activity in CRESTONE, but most businesses really struggle here. Apparently, Colorado does not allow grocery retailers to carry wine or liquor. So you will need to buy your liquor in Alamosa or Salida as you head into town.
