This place was huge! It has a long counter of fresh meat priced by the pound including: beef, pork, poultry and seafood. In the back there is a massive freezer of meats, and another freezer full of seafood items. They also had a large selection of pantry items and specialty canned goods and condiments. Some were made in-house and many products were from companies around Colorado. Lastly they had a large cooler dedicated to dairy, every kind of cheese you can think of. It has been awhile since we spent an extended time in Salida but this is an absolutely wonderful place for meat lovers and foodies. They regularly advertise in The Mountain Mail with new specials each week. It didn't take long looking at those ads before we had to come get us some. Enter and you have a long meat counter on the right with a cornucopia of beef, pork and chicken choices. On the left wall are shelves and coolers with all kinds of specialty foods including seasonings, cheeses, jarred and canned delights and more. It is dangerous to go in here if you are not hungry and doubly dangerous if you are because you will be tempted to buy much more than you realistically can consume in a reasonable period of time. Make sure you have freezer and pantry space. The steaks we bought were superb when we grilled them later. The kielbasa was also quite good a few days later with pierogis. If I lived in Salida I would buy all my meat here and use the other side of the store for things to play with my food with. read more

These folks make a super supersetta sausage that is the best charcuterie I have ever had, and that is saying quite a lot. Every person I share it with tells me it is the best salami they have ever had and I agree. Very smoky with a deep, rich flavor that has got a little kick to it. If I had one salami that I could eat for the rest of my life, it would be this one. Their smoker burned down a few years ago, and they stopped making it; I offered to send them money to rebuild their smoker. I seriously did that. read more

We drove here from Montrose because friends have raved about the selection of fresh quality meats. We should have called ahead because most of the meat was frozen or sealed in plastic. We did buy a packaged roast and a couple steaks. It would have been worth the drive (128 mi each way) if we could have come away with a few more items. read more

About two weeks ago I stop by and talked to a gentleman about ordering a custom cut Tomahawk Steak. He told me that he could cut one but it might take a week or so and he would just cut one out before cutting everything else. So today, I stopped by to order a nice thick 36 to 40 OZ steak and was told that they con not cut just one and that I would have to buy all eight, oh and they are about $30.00 per pound. Now the price is not the problem. It is when I talked to one staff and he said no problem and he would get with the office staff with a price. Then office staff tells me that I can not get one custom cut steak, that's the problem. Over the years we have bought half a Beef and Hog and a lot of Steaks from Scanga Meat, but no more. read more

So. I want to start by saying I really want to like scanga meat. Their meat is pretty good and they have a good selection but my last visit there made me extremely uncomfortable. No one working in the store was wearing a mask (including the people who were handing the meat). They also have a sign out front telling people it's ok to not in their business. I'm all for peoples individual rights... but less so when it comes to sanitation. If this is how they are in their store front... I don't know what they're doing when people aren't looking. read more

This company is one of the only places we Salidans have left to shop that is local. Up until today they'd get 5 stars.The beef is excellent, the bacon is to die for, and the shop is great as are the family. The only proble we've had is their lights that point at us across the hwy. Unfortunately, they have sold us out. We live nearby and have always enjoyed our formerly peaceful home near their operation. They are placing a subdivision there which will ruin the rest of what's left of the peace we had left and there will be continuous building beside us. We're here to retire and have been here 30 years and this company has always stood for the community and the people. It is sad to see the kids sell out their community and our peace for profit. I like a good butcher- and this one does that and a step more. From the "unload livestock here" sign, to the rural location, I was pretty sure the meat would be local. True that. The "more" includes pasta, seafood(frozen) and several other exotic items, things that go really well with a steak for example. Here's the kicker- the prices are amazing. Very affordable. Really helpful staff. Pretty awesome. Finally, although Salida has two grocery stores, I think both have deficient (but not absent) meat departments. Scanga fills the gap, and a step more. read more

We learned about Scanga Meat Co. from our son who lives in Denver and shops at Scanga whenever he can. My husband was 1000% impressed by the quality of the meats and we enjoyed all their other products. We live 2 1/2 hrs away from Salida, but will be making regular jaunts up there just to stock up. What an absolute treasure and pleasure it is to be able to obtain high quality meats and a wide assortment of Italian food products. My hubby is part Neapolitan and I am part Sicilian so we know great food quality and products after learning to cook at a Momma and a Granma's side as we grew up. See you tomorrow! I love finding a good butcher shop!!! This place is great. If I had a big freezer in my RV I'd stock up. I ask how long ago the meat was butchered, and the lady behind the counter said Yesterday!!! We are talking fresh fresh fresh. We got a couple NY strips and they were like butter. I could cut the with a spoon. read more

Highly Recommend! These guys have the best and only butcher counter in the county and use all locally raised beef. Also cure their own meat including Proscuitto and Sopressata. The Sopressata is freaking unbelievable and they are only one of a few producers in the US. Nice friendly service and they can get everything you need. Try their Sausages as well! read more

I have been visiting Salida for over 25 years. I enjoy the area and I have been getting meat and other items from Scanga for at least that long; but not in the last 4 years. I was in Salida on September 18, 19, 20th of September 2021 and ordered Lobster Tails which were delivered to me. These were the worse lobsters tails I have ever had! They were very bitter and very expensive; 30 dollars each and I ordered 6. After many contacts with Scanga they never tried to even get in contact with me to do the right thing. My order was in an access of $400. I am not a retailer, simply a customer. I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED! BUYER BEWARE!! read more

Only wish that this shop was closer. We read about Scanga during our stay in Salida and decided we could easily transport our purchases during the 2 1/2 hour drive home. So far we have tried the Tenderloin Steak which was superb and the pork cutlets which we coated in bread crumbs and Parmesan cheese cooked up beautifully. This place is fun to go to and I like to shop there. My only criticism is that they finish off their beef with corn and no organics. I also like there choices of frozen fish but it is all farm raised which I don't eat. It is nice to go to an old fashion butcher to buy what you want. I would still go here rather than a grocery store where you don't know if the cattle have been raised in a concentrated animal farm. For me that is a deal killer. This shop is awesome! They offer many specialty items as well as locally sourced meats. We have never failed to get the freshest hamburger as they grind it 3 times a week. The bacon wrapped tenderloin is the absolute best! It is fork tender and tastes better than at a high priced restaurant. If you are wanting something for yourself and your partner, to throw on the Weber charcoal grill or over an open fire, look no further. The Chicken breasts, when slow~grilled to perfection, are succulent! The pork chops are equally as tasty. And all the beef is top choice. Although prices can seem a bit on the high side, remember, quality don't come cheap. This shop is a must go-to if you're near Salida. We had some of their breakfast sausage at our B&B and found out there was a local store. So glad we did. We shop there quite frequently, they offer local meats as well as game meats (elk, venison, bison, etc). They have good ground beef, and excellent cuts of beef and pork. The prices are consistent with local grocery stores. They also provide slaughter and butcher services for people who raise their own animals, drop them off live, pick them up vacuum packed and freezer ready. read more

We have been buying our meat from Scanga Meat Company for the past 6 years. We just bought some bacon and it was terrible!!! 90% of it was fat. Which means, we threw away 90%of it. When I contacted Rachel (who I assume is the manager) sent her pictures of the fat,she thought the bacon looked good with all that fat. Said she can't guarantee the quality and pretty much gave me the brush off. If this is how Scanga treats their customers, I don't think this is a good company. Sad too, cause we had been happy with their meats prior to this incident. But poor quality and poor customer service are not good signs for a company. read more

For home cooks this is truly as good as you will find in the US. Beautiful rib roast, seasonal lamb, and weekly fresh plump chickens. If you live in the county they also have a good selection of flash frozen seafood, as close as we get to fresh at 7200'. Looking for lunch and stopped by Scanga meat company. Back home, I used to find the best sandwiches in meat markets and this place was just as great, however, they didn't make our sandwiches. We did however get some insanely delicious sliced buffalo chicken and black forest ham as well as freshly sliced cheese. For a snack, we grabbed some salsa, cheese dip, Italian crostinis and cubed smoked-cheese and salami...YUM! Great prices, selection and product. read more
