Popped in here on a rainy Sunday and had the beautiful barn all to ourselves. Our wine tender was kind and friendly, checking on our group often. We couldn't have picked a better week to visit our friends family vacation home in Lovingston! The weather was beautiful and there was no rain in sight except for the day we left. Food: there wasn't any food present during this time. They did have cheeses to choose from but we had pie we just purchased and they were nice enough to allow us to eat it while we tasted the wine selections. Service: AWESOME! The owners invited us in and gave us a quick history lesson about the property. We were amazed at the beauty and the enthusiasm of this young newly wedded couple. They are the new owners were hard at work to rejuvenate this beautiful vineyard. We laughed a lot and enjoyed the four legged security guard out front, their dog. He checked us out and decided it was ok to stay. He offered our children a deck of uno cards as we sipped. Ambiance: I would say breathtaking. We visited during our spring break. It was so sunny at the top of the hill and they had it set up for a wedding the next day, if I can remember. The horses were roaming at the bottom of the vineyard and it was a lovely pond that sat on the property that was just so tranquil. They also showed us where they were building another outside barn for customers to use when attending events. The wine, the owners and most importantly the vineyard was more than we hoped for. Something reminiscent of better homes and garden. Bonus: do yourself a favor and stop by or call to see what great gifts they may offer for the holidays! We opened the bottle of Rotunda Red (2022) the other day with some friends at dinner and to our surprise it had gone bad. Smelled of wet leaves, band-aid and mustiness. I checked with a wine friend of mine and they said it was a brettanomyces infection. We poured the bottle out. Hopefully others don't have this problem. read more

We decided to go here on a day the hurricane was coming thru...lol. Oh well, we were wet and wind was blowing like crazy but it was worth it. Of course we were the only ones at the winery, we were brave and bold! lol. This is a beautiful winery, views are gorgeous and peaceful, even in the rain and wind. Once arriving, we parked in a generous parking lot, entered the cool looking barn. We were greeted promptly by a friendly gentleman. He introduced us to our options, we decided to do a flight and a glass of wine. They have mostly dry reds and white here, one sweet or semi-sweet wine. I tried all reds and they were very tasty. Decided to take a bottle of the reserve home. We really enjoyed ourselves and definitely will be back when we are in the area again! Highly recommend stopping here! LW is slightly off the beaten path, which adds to its rustic rural charm. The friendly, young couple hustle through their seasons mostly as a wedding venue. I found my visit more enjoyable because of a scheduled art event. The boutique wines are fine, but are better when paired with the outsourced pizza selections. Peaceful winery with a plethora of roaming animals. When we visited Lovingston Winery, there were 5 friendly corgis roaming around the tasting room asking for food and attention. The tasting room itself is stylish and open, but you may have to deal with a few bugs falling from the ceiling at certain times of year. We sampled the Cabernet franc, the merlot, and one of their red blends. The wines were generally on par with the wine of the region, but I didn't love anything that I tried. Overall, I had a nice experience and would recommend this winery to people who like dogs and tranquility. read more

Lovingston Winery holds a special place in our hearts--so much so that we've chosen it as the venue for our wedding! The wines are wonderful; the Seyval Blanc, in particular, is so good. The owners and staff are incredibly kind and welcoming. You can tell they have a passion for both wine and hospitality! The winery's setting is also stunning, with picturesque views overlooking rolling hills and vineyards. I been to dozens of wineries... I love going on day trips and visiting 3 or 4 vineyards while soaking in the scenery and countryside. The whole process is like a religious experience... I love it! The displaying of the label, the pour, the swirl, the nose, the legs...and finally the tipping on the tongue! Mmm, lovely. I enjoy the wine stewards descriptions as they go thru the list of tastings. I'm certainly no connoisseur but I know what I like and wine tastings make for a fun afternoon. That being said, I wasn't thrilled with Lovingston Winery. Be careful in the steep hill going down onto the property. The parking was atrocious and packed! It's not a very appealing sight, other than the pond. The building looks like a big garage. It's not warm or cozy, but rather cold and sterile. The atmosphere is vacuous and dull. I felt like I was in a mechanic shop, and not in a cool, industrial way. The day we went, there was a guitar player there which was fine, but it was $12 a person to get in, plus your wine. They had the bar upstairs right next to the staircase so people were literally waiting on the steps to get a glass of wine. There was a huge "bottleneck" of people trying to get up and down the stairs. It was like a traffic jam, it was chaotic and a little unsafe. Why wouldn't they put the bar downstairs in that huge empty concrete space? The wine itself was okay, and somewhat pricey. So for two, it was $24 to get in, $30 for the two small glasses of wine, plus tip $6, it was like $60 bucks! Here's a tip, give your customers a more generous pour and get some better seating. What's up with those hard metal chairs on the upper balcony? The only nice spot was the deck and it was overcrowded so we stood, drank out 4 sips of wine and left. With so many great wineries in this area, they really gotta step up their game! What a deflating experience, but my bestie and I made the best of it! I'm sorry for whining, but I had to uncork my feelings! Been there, done that, not going back. read more

One of the better stops along this route. They have 12 acres of vines, most of the regular varietals but they also have Pinotage as well (which was planted by the South African winemaker). The tasting room isn't the most scenic; the have a nice pond up front but the tasting bar overlooks the open production area. Then again, I'm more interested in the wine anyway! What I tried (PS - the prices were pretty reasonable all around) 16 Chardonnay: Toasty; liked it 16 Cabernet Franc: Not bad 16 Merlot: Cherry nose but smoky finish 16 Pinotage: Favorite of the lineup! 17 "Rotunda" red blend: I enjoyed it, especially because of the Pinotage component. What a little slice of paradise on the top of a mountain. We stayed in the Cabin with two other couples and it was wonderful. The owners have horses and dogs and were so friendly and helpful. The wines are DELISH. Especially loved the Seyval Blanc and the Cab Franc but the others were all unique and special too. The Pinotage is really special. The cabin has a well equipped kitchen and the beds were SOOO comfy. Close proximity to Monticello and Charlottesville so a perfect spot for a long weekend or a day trip! Would love to bring my toddler granddaughter to pick me some buttercups along the driveway. read more

Spent the weekend at this phenomenal spot on earth and couldn't imagine a better experience! The new owners have retained the winemaking staff that has nourished the vineyards for 17 years and the result is outstanding wines. However, they have upped the game on the visitation experience, creating a relaxed and generous wine tasting atmosphere, including a choice of sitting outside the 100- year old Farmhouse under the massive oak trees, or taking it inside the farmhouse if the air is chilly to sit by the fire, or linger at the kitchen bar or dining room table and engage with the new owners. Sorry for this long-ish review but there are too many great things to fit into a few sentences! Lovingston Winery and the Airbnb are the definition of "5 Stars"! The setting is gorgeous; lush, rolling green lawns; huge, old-growth trees; you get a good feeling just by entering the property! The winery is nestled next to a small pond. Tessa & Wes, the proprietors, gave us an excellent tour-educational but not too technical. Then we got to enjoy the wines. Loved the Cab Franc. Very approachable, soft and drinkable now. Next was the Estate Reserve. Sensational. Really big. Great now but you could probably lay it down for a few years, too (if you have the willpower to wait!) Also tried their Pinotage, which we'd never heard of prior to visiting Lovingston. A South African grape, it reminded me of a Pinot Noir. Liked it a lot. There are multiple lodging options but we spent 3 nights in the Farmhouse. Stayed in the Master Suite. Huge space; super-clean; enormous, comfy bed. There's a fabulous kitchen; professional-grade appliances; 8-burner gas range; multiple ovens; great set-up if you want to prepare some meals on-site. In addition, you've got a charming front porch, complete with rocking chairs; a covered back patio with seating for 10; and a side patio with Adirondack chairs. I mentioned Tessa and Wes earlier; they're a charming couple who run the place. They couldn't have been more hospitable! We can't wait to return! read more

First off, look no further for a fantastic winery experience. My wife and I recently had a wonderful stay in the cabin at Lovingston Winery. We tried every wine and we were blown away. Who knew Virginia wine was this good. You can taste inside the adorable farmhouse or you can sit in any number of wonderful settings outside. Patio, tables on the lawn surrounded by beautiful trees, flowers and a view of the vines and a lake. Fantastic wine, food and attention. A lovely couple owns and operates this gem and they spoil you with kindness and juicy reds and whites! Can't miss spot that is now our go to heaven place...... Everything was just very comfortable and relaxing. Including the horses and the dogs. The red and white wines were also very good, we enjoyed the Chardonnay, the Merlot and the estate reserve. So, we randomly picked this winery off the Monticello Wine Trail list. When pulling up, we saw the sign said closed. We thought, bummer, but pulled in to turn around since the road was narrow. After checking on our baby and deciding on next steps, someone from the winery came out and said hello. I asked if they were open, "Sure, if you want us to be." Never ones to turn down wine, we scooped out the kid and went inside. They'd just finished the harvest and it was a quiet time. So, we got an awesome private tasting and wine geek lesson. We ended up buying a case! I'm not a red wine drinker and normally take a polite sip and move on but not this time. Each bottle of red that he brought out was better than the last. Smooth and not dry. Not sweet either but they didn't make your mouth pucker. While sampling some amazing wines, he told us all about the winery, their process and philosophy. Then gave a great recommendation for lunch. If you are coming to C'ville to do the wine trail, then come here. But maybe call first because as it turns out the closed sign did mean they were closed. A small modest winery that makes some awesome reds and the only winery I've been to with a free tasting. I'm a sucker for a good red, and with multiple friends recommending Lovingston, the girlfriend and I took the 40 minute drive down Route 29 to investigate. The tasting room is upstairs in the winery, a much more industrial experience but still nice with a small tasting bar and a porch overlooking the pond. As other reviewers mentioned, the tasting was free, a rarity for wineries. It seems like people always rave about the reds, but Lovingston makes some pretty good whites too, especially the Petit Manseng, a little sweet with hints of pineapple and orange. The reds are definitely their stronger wines. I thoroughly enjoyed the Pinotage (cherry and dark fruits) and the Rotunda Red (a blend, with an oak and dark cherry taste). Overall, I really can't say a bad thing about any of these wines - they were all really good, and it was very difficult not to purchase every single bottle on the tasting menu. If you're primarily a red drinker you'll have lots to enjoy at Lovingston (and the white drinkers may be converted). read more

Not much of a view, compared with other wineries nearby, and the food/snack options are limited (though they do let you bring in outside food - if you like fried chicken the Chicken Coop is right up the road). So why 5 stars then? That wine tho. Service is great, we're wine club members and we've never anyone not attentive or delightful to talk with, but the star of the show is the wine. You won't find a miss here, whether you like a lighter red or a deep, dark one. Their whites are also fantastic. Well worth the drive from LBurg, CVille, Richmond, etc. read more

Holy hidden gem awesomeness! Okay, I must admit, after looking a host of David R.'s price-centric reviews, I thought he just might be biased on this place because the costs were low. He definitely has complaints with the cost of VA wines, and I suspected he liked this place more because of price than quality. Well, I was wrong and David is right. This place is awesome! Atmosphere-wise, there's not a lot going on. You taste in a small area that overlooks the work area. I think this is kind of cool: it's clear this place is about creating good wine, not pandering to tourists. And, wow, the wines were good and the prices were low!!! I liked pretty much all the reds. We bought two bottles of the Estate Reserve, a bargain at about $18 each, and some of the other offerings as well. I also took home a bottle of Wahoo White, a light blend with melon flavors that's nice for drinking alone. I think I ended up buying 5 bottles of wine and my total was around $80. Not bad at all for Virginia vino. The guy who did our tasting was also super friendly and informative. There was no snobbiness going on--only an enthusiasm for wine and passing on info. about it. This place is a bit out of the way, but if you like quality wine, it's totally worth the visit. I'll certainly be returning. read more

Lovingston Winery was a last stop on a day spent enjoying other area wineries. We happened up it near closing time, but they were more than happy to accommodate a tasting and a glass on the patio. The tasting room itself is rather small and simple. You actually enter into the wine processing area and have to go up some steep steps to an extremely modest bar area but nice open outside patio area. The place is rather stark and not overly done, but I think it's neat that the room does overlook the processing area. So it's probably a real treat to have a tasting while they are working down there. On premises are two friendly dogs, however the place is not pet friendly. We had to leave our little guy secured outside in a shaded area being entertained by one of the winery's dogs. Luckily we could see him from the tasting room. A nice surprise was the fact that the tastings were free, and that the offerings were mostly a nice variety of reds. I'm typically a red wine drinker so having more reds to sample was a nice surprise. Plus the fact that I actually liked many of them. Of the many VA wineries I've visited, I've typically leaned towards their white wine offerings. So finding one where the reds were a standout was great! We really enjoyed the one our wine pourer compared to a pinot noir, so maybe the Cab Franc. Although the Pinotage (also a highly rated wine on the Wine Spectator list) might have also been the one. Either way, they were both very good. Our pourer was very friendly and accommodating, although she seemed a bit shy and timid. That being said, it didn't detract from our enjoying the experience, because we appreciated her accommodating us while they were closing up. All in all, I would recommend Lovingston Winery as a winery to visit. read more

If you want THE HIDDEN JEM of central Virginia wine here it is. From cville head down 29 south, past pippen hill, past delfosse and past the adorable little town of Lovingston, keep going!! The R hand turn for this winery takes you by beautiful country side to a slopping hillside farm with a nice bright patio. The tasting room is the barrel room! No fancy lights and door knobs here! If you're looking for a relaxing getaway, move Lovingston Winery to the top of your list. There are fire pits for those who want to enjoy the outdoors and cozy indoor space with a fireplace available if you prefer to be inside. We stayed in the main Farmhouse; absolute perfect blend of old and new - very clean, super comfy beds, quiet and peaceful location. Make sure you get up early at least one morning to catch the sunrise ... I couldn't take my eyes off the horizon as it exploded with color! Can't wait to go back! read more

If you are anywhere near this winery you need to stop and check it out. We spent the whole day with the new owners the Riley family and Wes! Wonderful hosts from the time we stepped out of the car. We were greeted promptly and quickly shown the selection of wines. You could choose inside or outside around many fire pits to partake in the tastings. We chose the 4 wine flights and 3 cheese tray to go with it. Everything was very tasty. Hard to choose a favorite wine or cheese. What sealed the deal was the family friendly atmosphere.There was something for everyone from kids to adults. What an enjoyable and relaxing day. Sorry when we had to leave! I'm reluctant to review this winery because it is a best-kept secret but my experience there was so positive that I should get the word out. I've never had such fantastic wine at such an affordable price--I'm talking a rich, full-bodied Merlot at $14! The owner explains that he's a small outfit - he views this as a hobby and just makes enough wine to cover his costs. The savings are passed to customers. I dare anyone not to buy at least three bottles at this place, tucked away in the hills off route 29 near Lovingston, a town near "Waltons country" in Nelson County. Call before stopping by--the owner admits his family takes impromptu trips every now and then and closes the winery for a few days. read more

Red wine fans, go here. Period. I've not enjoyed as many robust, rich reds at any other Virginia winery (out of several dozen I've visited). And the per-bottle prices are very reasonable compared to lots of Virginia winemakers. A bare-bones atmosphere; you're tasting at a counter set up in one of the working facilities of the winery -- surrounded by concrete floors, large vats and a general smell of fermentation, which I like. The small tasting area overlooks "where the magic happens" - we enjoyed all the wines as well as our tasting/tour of the Lovingston philosophy. They are seriously passionate about their winemaking, but as another commenter said, totally not snooty about it. During our tasting our guide asked if we knew much about the area, then proceeded to make several recommendations for local restaurants - pretty cool and definitely helpful! There isnt much of a picnic area that we noticed, but that doesnt seem to really be their thing (fine with us). We purchased bottles of petit manseng and merlot and brought them home to enjoy. We visited this winery based on its proximity to a hike we went on before the vineyard. We had a sweet poodle puppy with us so when we arrived and saw the "no pets, please" sign posted at the entrance we decided to turn around when possible and find another vineyard that was dog friendly. However the moment we parked to regroup and turn around we were bombarded by a very aggressive dog. He was barking at the poodle in our car and jumping on the car, leaving scratches all over both sides of the vehicle that a car wash and buff did not remove..... We tried to shield the car from the dog but it kept running to the opposite side of the car, leaving more scratches. I was also a bit afraid it might bite us so didn't want to anger it too much. It took several minutes before who I can only assume were the owners came speeding in on their golf cart to grab their dog. They did not apologize or even acknowledge us in any way. They took their dog away and we promptly drove off the property. A very unpleasant experience. I am shocked the owners did not come apologize for the traumatic experience and damage done to our car. Needless to say, we will not be going anywhere near the property again. We opted for Democracy vineyard that day instead just a few miles up the road. They were very dog friendly (and people friendly). Our dog was allowed in the tasting room and on the deck and the staff even gave her treats and a dog bowl for water. read more
