Employees were friendly and very helpful to the point at the checkout the sacker spoke up about a special price on 3 boxes of Chex cereal as my mother in law was making the second batch of Chex Mix. Everything we needed was there - though she was looking for Chocolate Orange and they didn't have any. So close to Christmas the place was packed though and it was difficult to navigate. Given how much snowfall there was the parking lot was in need of another scraping. And also given how far north it is and the amount of snow St Ignace receives I think they should have a longer entry area to make sure snow covered boots can be shed of the snow instead of making the whole store's floor slick and wet as you walk and it melts off.

Doud's is a small market, but it has lots of stuff. As far as I know, this is one of the only markets on Mackinac Island. There actually is another Doud's down Main Street toward the ferry area, but it's a smaller grab-and-go convenience store, mostly with snacks and coffee. My hotel was right across the street, so I bopped into Doud's a couple of times during my stay, to grab a bottle of wine (they have a decent selection of wine), some candy for my kids, and some fruit because I needed to eat something fresh. The store is tidy and everything is arranged nicely. They also have self-checkout kiosks, so you can get in and out quickly.

Apparently it started off as an IGA, but then broke away from the franchise and blossomed into what it is today. I love going to grocery stores when I'm in a different city, because they always have products that aren't available at home. So the last time my husband and I were in The Soo, I dragged him into the rental car to go check out Pino's and now he raves about it even more than I do, lol. It's huge like a Loblaws or Superstore, but has the feel of more like a Farm Boy or a Whole Foods. It has a great bakery section with fresh baked donuts! The prepared food section has lots of variety. We were growing tired of eating out so much on our trip so we bought a bunch of stuff to eat back at our hotel room. Whenever people talk about The Soo, I always bring up Pino's Get Fresh and The Burger Don as my two favourite places there ;)

They have a surprising amount of natural food items (Annie's brand, etc.) and really affordable prices for a small-town grocery store. Not a ton of produce like most U.P. groceries but nice selection in most everything else. All the employees are very nice and everyone works hard. It shows in this tidy and well-run business and we go out of our way to shop here every summer while visiting family. I've got pictures of it. Prior to that it was a local dance hall that the loggers spent after the week of logging. it was used to supply the needs of the islands and local folks. Now it's a tourist deli. Yikes, what happened to the simplicity of life!
