While I can't speak to the underlying output and success of the factory itself, SIMS offers a fantastic guided tour, showing New Yorkers how their trash gets processed and recycled. Tours are about 60 to 90 minutes and lead you through the whole factory, highlighting how the material comes in, how its initially deposited, sorted, and shipped out to people who want recycled material for use. While not the best place for a date spot, there's definitely something cool about getting to go see how a little piece of New York City runs beneath the surface. There's also hands on exhibits for kids to learn a bit about how recycling works and (metaphorically) get their hands dirty with the toy sorting machines

There are tours available on their website or by appointment and they last about an hour to 1.5hrs. Our guide was friendly, knowledgeable, and willing to answer any questions we may have. They have kid-friendly displays and demos of how everything gets identified, sorted, compacted, and re-sold to companies that make the packaging of our daily goods. They'll also take you to an overlook of the facilities so you can see how the mountains of recycled material goes from trucks to and through the sorting machines. It's not the most glamorous place, but it's a cool learning experience you'll remember.

I went through the main entrance and got told that the entrance was at the home depot side, so I had to carefully back out and make my way. All fair - I have to respect the line and other people's time. There were 3-4 vans ahead of me and I waited maybe 20-30 minutes. The process was smooth as someone who's not in the industry. 1) Go in and get your car weighted 2) Get directed to a spot where you will unload all your metal 3) Head towards the exit to get reweighed 4) Get paid As someone not in the industry, I was just given the value of the weight in light iron, because they wanted to get me out and not sort whatever metal I had. Thankfully I didn't have anything valuable like copper. Unfortunately, the gave me 5 cents a pound and valued everything as light iron. I had a 100 pounds (or so I'm told) and got paid $5 for it. Not worth the manual labor nor the gas used. The staff here are pretty accommodating and will direct you as needed. Not the most welcoming but definitely not rude either. When I called, I was told they would sort the metal I had for the appropriate prices. No such thing happened. They just want to get people in and out.

The furniture they moved was a difficult piece. A very large, heavy wall unit. They handled it like it was nothing to them. The photos show the before and after. We had mostly amazing experiences with Junkluggers for 4 separate cleanouts of a family home with…read more30+ years worth of stuff. The guys even frequently stopped to admire items and would ask if they could keep little trinkets. The crews worked really hard and will hustle to get the job done. They also do a great job of saving photos and items that look like heirlooms. We felt most crews were respectful and even offered tips on how to repair or sell stuff. If not for what went wrong below, we would have had consistently 5-STAR experiences. Where things took a turn was in the last cleanout, a large crew came to clear the rest of the home. Unlike prior crews that took great care in bagging up items and carefully disassembling furniture, this crew kept breaking perfectly good dishes, glassware, vases, books, figurines, antique sculptures, furniture, artwork, wood-framed mirrors, and more. They would toss bags across the room and I would hear entire bags of glass shatter. About half of these items were smashed to smithereens and definitely not making it to new homes. A mahogany table, several chairs, and solid wood bookshelves were also extremely damaged from how they were being moved around and stacked. A primary reason we hired Junkluggers over competitors was for their eco-friendly mission to donate and recycle items! The stuff that was left in the last round included complete china sets now smashed to bits, newly released books that were thrown in with cleaning supplies, perfectly intact art pieces now ripped, branded glassware still in original boxes, etc. Had we known that they would treat this round like this, like rotting garbage, we would have waited and made an effort to offer these items and furniture to family, friends, neighbors, charities, and local groups. It broke my heart watching nice things get destroyed, even though this stuff did not belong to my immediate family. I did get frustrated enough to ask why they kept breaking everything, and the guys just shrugged and said they were running out of time. While they met their commitment of clearing the home, I would think twice before hiring them again, as the degree to which they treat items seems to vary and did not leave me feeling confident that most of it will be donated or recycled.
