It's a girly explosion of women's accessories, with a glamorous (and slightly Asian) influence. The Vogue: much of the stock falls into either "sparkly" or "feathery" categories, like shoes, hats, belts, lingerie, and oh yes, jewelry. Some goodies, like the plumed hairpieces and chain-link purses, are actually prettier and cheaper than similar items at vintage stores. Prices are very good, and there always seems to be a sale on when I go in. It's all straight up sweetness and unabashed glamour, just the sort of accoutrements you could imagine Krystle Carrington donning before throwing Alexis in the pond. The Démodé: the proprietess relies on less subtle methods of security than this Western urbanite is used to. My pleasant lunch break trance was shattered by the loud motion activated bell that rings when you enter and exit. The manager overtly watched my every movement and followed five steps behind me at all times. To be fair, her behaviour may not have been fueled by suspicion but rather a more traditional Asian style of customer service. But just in case you make your way to O'Gemma, don't skulk around the store and cackle like Snidely Whiplash. Who knows what they'll do?

Lately I've been inundated with FB ads for a specific made-in-Canada household cleaner and I was intrigued with the product, for many reasons. On the manufacturer's website, it showed that this Coast Goods store sold the products, so I decided to check it out IRL (as opposed to purchasing it blind on the web). This shop is quite small, right on Victoria Dr at the corner of Charles. There are lots of trees on both sides of the street and the area is very residential. Even with GPS, I drove right past the shop initially without seeing it (the canopy of trees obstructed the shop sign and street sign for Charles). FYI. (Granted, I'm not familiar with this particular area). Once you know where the shop is, there are ample free parking spots on Victoria proper. The store interior is small but jam-packed with incredibly well-curated items. I really like that all (or the vast majority) are Canadian-made, and many, artisanal. From jewelry to greeting cards to candles to pottery and dinnerware, from textiles and cocktail napkins to organic cleaning supplies... you'd be hard-pressed not to find something perfect here, for yourself or a gift for others. I like how they carried local artists' works but also a few other well-known companies' works (i.e., Jenny Bird jewelry, for example). The two women who worked here when I visited couldn't have been nicer. They opened up their own cleaners that I was interested in, so I could smell the different scents, and we chatted a bit about all the fun stuff in the store. Great place! I know I'll be back.

It's one of those shops I'm glad isn't close to my house or I'd be over there wayyy too often adding various colorful furniture, knick-knacks, and bric-a-brac to my stale beige apartment. The shop features two rooms devoted to all things imports. The first room is mainly small items, from jewelry and candles to clothing and other decor items. If you're looking for a gift for that hard-to-shop-for friend, this is the place. The second room is full of seriously gorgeous furniture and larger household decor items. Dressers, chairs, beds, dining sets, tapestries, lamps, rugs...it's all in here and it's all just begging you to dig out the ol' credit card and re-dec your place to look like you just returned from a six month excursion through Southeast Asia. The staff are super helpful, too. I was looking for a wall tapestry for my daughter (who is trying desperately to add a boho vibe to her bedroom). The store employee showed me the different sized tapestries and helped me pick one that most suited my kid's vibe. She said if my daughter didn't like it I was welcome to come back and exchange it for a different one. (Luckily, she liked it!) Someday when I win the Mega Millions I'm going to head to Wander and buy one-of-everything.

But then newcomer Spirits Free arrived, and although at first it seemed the store had an identity crisis, leaving the sign blank with no name for months, the character of the shop, now aptly named 'Wander', really took an independent form. The space was brightened up considerably and filled with affordable merchandise from around the globe. Add nice music and an uncluttered layout and voila! You have an inviting, warm place to buy lovely things for yourself or gifts for friends. The merchandise includes home decor and objects of self adornment. From tribal style to Yoga style, there's something for everyone and every season. You can't just pass by, you have to wander in :)

They carry high-end labels as BA&SH, Free People, and accessories by Sailor Jerry, In God We Trust, and Illume. Zuriick sneakers look hot on the boys and Free Worn tees are so Main Street! Silk tanks by Graham and Spencer are a bit pricey ($300 and over), but the Cheap Denim jeans are not too heavy on the wallet. If you like Valley of the Dolls on Main or Misch on Granville, even Lilly and Jae, you'll love this store.

They were also on sale, which added tremendously to their appeal. I also really appreciate when sales people are actually honest, in providing a second opinion when asked what looks best on my body for instance. Here. they are truly helpful, which always makes for a positive shopping experience, bringing me back every season... though only to peruse the small sales section at the back of the store. The types of items stocked here are totally down my alley, so I admit, I am biased. I love modern, clever, functional, non-fussy things, items with clean lines, nothing superfluous (I hate clutter. So things have to be practical!), smart and contemporary. It's like the buyer at this shop totally read my mind. I loved practically everything here. They have the coolest binoculars, lightweight puff blankets in a bag (light as a feather. Really!), candles, decanters, baskets, placemats and trivets and coasters, reflective tags and pins, cards, stunning jewelry, thick "butcher" aprons with the coolest hardware clips, organic baby linen bundles and gifts, contemporary tea infusers, glassware, adult card games and notebooks.... I could go on and on. Everything is cool here and beautiful to look at. The ladies who work here were all super nice and totally let us browse at our leisure. They were also very knowledgeable about all the merchandise. I've seen some of these items at local craft fairs, so I know they are locally made, by local artisans.
