My father in law and I went on a guided fly trip with Erik at Lost River Outfitters. Erik is an absolute 10/10 when it comes to guides. I am an experienced fly fishermen but my father in law had never swung a fly in his life. The first place we went was Silver Creek which was lights out. I caught a tagged brown trout on the first cast (bucket lister) and probably staged 6-8 more fish. Silver Creek is a very technical fishery, but my father in law still managed to pull out 3-4 fish that morning. After that Erik took us to another stream, I cant remember the name, where we proceeded to catch at least 20 more fish between us. My father in law went from not expecting to catch anything, to having an absolute lights out day and I attribute it all to the patience and instruction of our guide Erik. My daughter and I take a trip together in August or September every year and in 2023 decided on Sun Valley Idaho. Really wanted to fly fish. Went to Lost River Outfitters on Friday August 25, 2023 and made reservations to fly fish on following Monday and gave them name and credit card # to hold places. We have never fly fished before and this was made clear. I was told we would be contacted day before about gear and sizes, etc. On Sunday, the day before, no one contacted me and it was getting later so about 4pm, I called the number on the card and got vm. About an hour later, I called again and was sent to vm. I left a message and about an hour later a guy called and said we were not on the schedule for Monday. He said he did not feel like going to the shop to get our gear but thought he had some gear (I guess at his home) and would meet us at 9 a.m. next morning although I made it clear on Friday we needed to go at 8 a.m. on Monday because of other plans. He said he would find someplace to fish Monday morning and ping my phone where it would be and we could meet him there. NOT AT ALL what was explained to me on Friday when reservation made. Here we are two women asked to drive to the middle of nowhere possibly with no cell service and meet some guy I had never even seen before. I thought about it for a while and texted him and cancelled because this was not at all what was told to me when reservations were made. It made me really uncomfortable. He told me if we cancelled we would be charged cancellation fee. We weren't even on the schedule!!! Monday morning at 8 am he texted and said we could meet him at the shop since I was uncomfortable but said something about we would interfere with his childcare plans. Never understood that. It was obvious he did not want to take us fly fishing. We did not go. Spent $44 on fishing license we could not use. Really disappointing and affected our trip. Total disorganization. I am very disappointed in Lost River Outfitters. I wanted to go fly fishing with my buddies and thought this was the place to go. I expressed my interest in having them provide a guide and they took down my credit card information. I received a phone call from the guide 5pm the day before we were supposed to go out and fly fish telling us we needed to have licenses and gear set up for tomorrow at 9am. I was blindsided by this maneuver because me and my friends had went rafting hours before and were very tired. I communicated with the guide saying that it was unfair to tell us we needed all of this before 9am tomorrow when he had called us at the end of the day and asked to cancel/ reschedule. Members of the staff communicated to me that a cancellation fee would most likely get waived or at most be $100, which I understood and appreciated. I woke up today to see a $200 charge on my statement with no prior warning. Very disappointing to see and this is a result of business malpractice. Fraud. read more

My wife and I wandered into LRO the day before our anniversary to attempt to book a fly guide for anniversary. We had expectations that the likelihood of this being possible was slim. We ended up dealing with Zach who was very friendly, helpful and accommodating. He found us a guide and got us setup with all the gear we needed. We ended up fishing the Wood the next morning and had a great time. Suzanne was our guide and was super cool. She has years of experience in the area and was a blast to spend the day with. We also spent a few bucks in the very cool store they have. If you're looking for clothes, gear or a guide I would recommend LRO any day. read more

I was in town on a multi stop fishing trip through Montana and Idaho. I went in there to get some supplies and as all fly fishermen do in a new shop, look for something they don't have and convince themselves that they "need". There were a couple of young guys behind the counter who couldn't care less if I was there. One guy was talking to what sounded like his girlfriend the whole time and the other was heads down on the computer the whole time. I was the only one in the store and you'd think they would approach me or even just acknowledge my presence. Nada, they were into their own thing and couldn't be bothered with me. I got computer dudes attenton and said I'd like to see a reel ( I actually DID need one for my steelhead rig) and computer dude, the guy not chatting on his cell, gave me just a nod, like "Chill, I'll get to you", not a word, then went back heads down surfing whatever he was on the computer. I wanted to buy some flies for my next day on the Big Wood and needed to know what to buy. Nothing, nada, no attention whatsoever. I prowled around in there for 20+ minutes and no acknowledgement of my existence. I even left to see if Sturtevants or Silver Creek were open and came back when I found they weren't and they STILL didn't acknowledge me when I just stood there looking at them. Nothing. Like I had the plague. From what I saw in the shop, the selection probably rates a 4 star. But service *IS* what makes a fly shop. I can get everything online if I wanted to, but I buy everything from a local shop because no website store can tell me what they used to catch tricky fish, hours ago, at a spot only a local shop would know of! I finally made it into Silver Creek across the street the next day. They know how to treat a customer! read more

We walked in the person working said nothing to us, I asked a question if everything on the rack marked 40 percent off was true he said yes. We picked a jacket off the rack shopped around for a bit, got completely blown off when I asked about another size in a jacket and decided to check out, he rang up the jacket off the sale rack at full retail price and I asked didn't you say anything on the rack was on sale. He simply replied with it's not all on sale do you want it or not? This was some of the worst customer service I have ever had, this guy was on his phone non stop, didn't seem to give a shit about his customers or the store. We bought the jacket, and returned it just to go across the street and buy the same one from silver creek outfitters because of their customer service and great attitude I've ever walked in. I will never shop at lost river outfitters again. It's a shame because they've got some great stuff, but in this day and age with the internet and local competition you've gotta have some friendlier people working in your store. read more

I just returned from a 4-day trip to Yellowstone with Scott Schnebly, the owner of LRO. Without a doubt, it was the best guided experience I've had in +35 years of fly fishing all over North America and the Caribbean. Even though Mother Nature kept throwing curveballs at us (blown out rivers, some areas closed due to wild fires, etc.) he always found ways to get us onto to fish. I visited Ketchum for a fishing adventure and a vacation with my wife. I went to the Lost River Fly Shop on a recommendation from a gentleman who saw me carrying fly rods on the plane. They were so helpful. I bought flies and a 3 day Idaho license. They also gave me lots of advise on where and how to fish. Sometimes a fly shop can be intimidating = dude you don't know how to fish but we will sell you some stuff anyway. This won't happen at The Lost River. Scott and Frank took us on a trip of lifetime today in the one of the prettiest places in the world. The 3 of us, my sons, 20 and 14, walked into the canyon where the big wood river, and it was beyond our expectations. At one point, I looked up the canyon to where my sons were casting in perfect rhythms with the canyon in the background while the snow came down hard. It was a once in a lifetime moment and one we'll never forget. Scott owns the place and has been guiding for over 40 years. Frank was amazing and worked with me primarily and was an expert at the craft. They both intended for us to have fun and catch fish. Within 10 minutes of being knee deep in the river, my youngest had landed a fish and my other son and I had already had bites. I can't recommend these guys more. We were on a Sun Valley vacation (primarily to ski) and wandered into the store one evening when everything else on Main Street was closed. We got to talking with the very friendly and attentive staff, and became interested in a guided fly-fishing day trip. Neither of us had ever done any fly fishing and were leery about whether we could enjoy it as novices, but we decided to give it a try and it turned into one of the best outdoor experiences we've ever had. The scenery was gorgeous, our guide Scott (the owner of the store) couldn't have been more patient and helpful in his instruction, and we ended up landing 15-20 rainbow trout between us. Scott has a wealth of knowledge about the Idaho outdoors which he readily shares, and as a bonus he made an outstanding clam chowder for lunch.
