Thumbs up for the unique and interesting tour of the Lost River Caverns in Hellertown, PA. Expect a guided tour of a cave with beautiful rock formations and a small, lost river that runs through a portion of the cave. Have outdoorsy footwear and a jacket, even in the summer, as the underground temperature is a cool 50s/60s. Once through the cave, take a few pictures outside, some great photo ops for the family including a brief, kid-friendly nature trail. Walk across the street for a lunch picnic area. There is a nice gift shop to visit after your tour, and a friendly staff to help you. Lost River Caverns can handle large groups and class trips. Do, however, limit your expectations of the cave as the scenery is not as spectacular as other cave/caverns located in other Eastern States. The rope paths in the nature walk could use some fixing. This was a very nice day trip. The cave is rather small. However it has all the elements of the bigger caves. The tour guides are friendly and seem very knowledgeable. It is a little surprising and annoying that they allow you to throw coins into the lost river. It seems a little opposite of the ideas to preserve and protect these natural wonders. The gift shop is small and a little cheesy. We thought the prices were a little high for a half hour tour. We had 2 adults and one child and it cost approximately $50. The bottom line is my 6 year old son really enjoyed the tour and we thought it was informative as well. This is really a one time tour but for what it is we enjoyed it. read more

There's something just so electrifying about caves. If I were a professional Eccentric, I would purchase my own personal cavern system strictly for the purpose of throwing dance parties in it. When I was younger, ferried back and forth to school, I dreamt of buying a yellow school bus, throwing out all the seats and making that my dancehall. Now the dream is a cave. When our guide pointed out that a certain chamber (now housing a nondemoniational chapel) was once converted into a dancehall complete with a rocky alcove for a live band to play in, fantasy & reality mingled together in my head while a soppy grin formed on my face, visions of thousands of terpsichorean candleflames flickering to the melody of a raucous banjo, hands clapping, whoops & hollers and prancing shadows of a frolicking group stretched grotesque on the gnarled limestone walls. I snapped out of my little reverie, my guide mistakenly believing that I was grinning over her latest little rock joke. "We like ta' say that the Rolling Stones played here, hee hee!" We moved on. The tour was actually a *personal* tour, being that my boyfriend and I were the only two crazies at Lost River Caverns on a Sunday afternoon at 5pm. Our guide was actually quite nice and informative, although the tour was blatantly set up to anticipate children's reactions, inform their questions...and to alleviate their boredom, from time to time. Me, I have a childlike sense of wonder, so I was also a perfect candidate for the tour and I peppered the nice lady with queries that she was extremely happy to answer. Besides the requisite talk about stalactites/stalagmites, she also demonstrated the scientific property of florescence, which on the infinitely long list of supercool natural phenomena entries, is pretty high up there. The tour was about 30-40 minutes long and I'd say, worth the 10 dollar entry fee if you have an interest in caves or natural science. I would hope it would entrance any and all children, but you know... kids these days. Wear proper shoes and a jacket when visiting, its always a chill low-50s in the cave. Little brother cave to Crystal, the kitschy factor here gets ratcheted up a notch with their 'Jungle Pirate Dinosaur' theme as you wait to enter the cave. The cave itself is much tighter than some others I've been in, and not for those who don't enjoy narrow passageways. Although there are large rooms, some walkways are definitely narrow. The flowing crystal clear 'lost' river was very neat, and apparently drinkable, although sampling was not allowed. (We wondered if new tour guides were initiated with a plunge into the icy 54 degree water!) Best thing in the gift shop? The A-Treat soda machine with birch beers for fifty cents! read more

Lost River Caverns - Museums Near Me - Hellertown, Pennsylvania

The lost river caverns, is made of five chambers and is pretty easy to cut and chase through in a half hours time. There aren't any minerals and is made of limestone that water dissolved through time. I enjoyed the little area where there are some fluorescent minerals and the tour guide displays ultraviolet light show. The lost river cavern contains no fossils and there hasn't been any signs of life, to ever bask in this cave. In the good old days, there were wedding ceremonies held, in this cave. That was put to an abrupt halt, as the carbons can destroy the structure and stop formation as well. These things were not know far back, which is why they no longer allow for them. There is a gift shop inside the cave and it is pretty affordable, I would recommend stopping in and picking some souvenirs, as I have. The cave is quite easy and small, but there is a tour guide to walk groups through every half hour. The tour guide was quite informing and well knowledgeable. I don't see a reason to return here, but I would likely recommend you stop by if you are passing through this part of town. read more

My husband and I stopped here on our trip, and we had a great visit! When we entered we were greeted promptly and told when the next tour would start. We had time to look around the museum and store. The tours normally start every 30 minutes, and start promptly. The tour was very enjoyable! Our tour guide was pleasant, and knowledge. The tour itself lasted about 45 minutes and was full of information. We stopped in every accessible room of the cavern for time to look around and take pictures. Our guide talked to us about the history of the cavern, the story of the lost river, and pointed out interesting features like the stalactites and stalagmites. Make sure to take time look around the museum at all of the interesting old-timey guns and the minerals on display. I would recommend stopping here if you're in the area and want an quick, interesting detour. read more

Caves are honestly some of my favorite things on earth. They've taken millions of years to form through erosion, and the beauty they hold is unmatched and unique. Then imagine you're Lost River Caverns and gatekeep any video in your Cave for fear of loss of revenue. For a Cave. That's existed long before you. And will exist long after you're gone. I understand why it's not handicap accessible, but to then go around and not allow the handicap to see it whenever they want regardless of the ability of their bodies is criminal. So don't go here. Find another Cave in PA (there are several) that will allow you to take video and make memories that will last almost as long as the beautiful sights in the caves. read more

Interesting attraction for a Saturday outing. My family and I live about an hour away but we love the Lehigh Valley/Easton PA area so we wanted to make a day of it and find some cool things to do over here. We decided a tour of the Lost River Caverns would be something new and different to try. The rock formations were really interesting, the tour guide was informative and knew the history and interesting facts about the caves. Great tour into the caverns. Our guide was Emily who, although said she had only returned to work there after a few years hiatus, was knowledgeable, interesting and kind. Our group had a number of younger children with us and she made sure they were OK when she lowered the lights to show some interesting mineral specimens that they have. Tour was about an hour. Very nice people who work in the gift shop. Our granddaughter bought a bag of sand to discover gems. There were actually a lot of very pretty rocks and crystals in it! Highly recommend. read more

Lots of fun and extremely interesting! As you get within a minute of the place you think you might've made a wrong turn because GPS had us go through a residential neighborhood and then golf course, then you suddenly see the parking lot and entrance. The front parking lot is very small, possibly less than 10 cars with additional parking across the street. It's obviously an older facility as you pull in but once you walk inside they have a really cool reception area/gift shop with artifacts and various types of rocks etc. They give you a time slot for your group and the guide takes you down into the caverns and underground river which are extremely interesting and at one point you are amazingly a quarter mile or more below ground level! Family owned establishment definitely recommend for small side trip! Admission very reasonable $13.25 for an adult read more

Needed something to do with my son while my wife gambled my money away at the nearby Sands Casino, so we went to check the cavern out. We were the only people on the last tour of the day. I have never been in a cave before, so it was interesting. My 7 year old seemed to enjoy it also. Tour took about 45 minutes. Basically you just walk through the cave and the guide points out and explains the interesting history of the cave and the water that runs through it. If your in the area it's worth a look. read more

This place is quaint and very interesting. The owner of the cave has crystal collections displayed all through his little gift shop from around the world and he has a rich display of animal heads that he has hunted throughout his lifetime. The cave itself is very cool (a constant 52 degree so bring a jacket) and damp (don't wear sandals!) Our guide was fabulous and very knowledgeable about the different rock formations. She was also very patient and has a fun and appropriate sense of humor (I can't remember her name but she has a beauty mark on her upper lip and has brown hair). Overall, I had a great time learning about bacon rock, glowing fluorides, and the story on the lost river inside the cave. It's worth a visit! read more

Definitely worth the visit. We took both our 6 and 11 year old children. Both loved the experience. The cavern is not cold. I would recommend sneakers as some areas were a bit wet. The route guide was fantastic and funny. We learned alot and are now interested in visiting other caverns. Highly recommend. read more

I was really looking forward to this tour. I absolutely love earth sciences. The caves are beautiful, unfortunately the tour guide couldn't get through her script fast enough and was extremely short with me every time I asked a question. I was made to feel ignorant and it completely ruined the experience for me. I get that this woman had better things to do, but she will be responsible for turning people off from returning. read more

We came here as kids and also on a school/camp trip. You get to go through the caverns and see unique rock formations - and of course, you wind your way out through the gift shop with all sorts of things that appeal to your average 4th grader. If you are in the area - it's worth a trip. (One is enough.) read more

Stopped by with a friend while driving from Reading to NYC, and it was GREAT. The gift shop is nuts; the tour is informative. This is a pretty sharp place to visit. The cave is beautiful to photograph. No Video Cameras allowed on tour! Employees are extremely nice. I would highly recommend this cave it is awesome to see how the earth forms. I will be going back for another visit. read more

I was here yesterday with a friend of mine who lives in the area. She had never seen a cave before, so I knew it was the perfect opportunity. On top of enjoying the wonderful tour, our tour guide Paul went above and beyond after our tour had ended. My car wouldn't start when we went to leave, and Paul saw that we were having trouble, and came out to help me jump start my car and gave me some helpful advice. I don't normally leave reviews, but the tour itself was very nice, and the staff are obviously willing to go the extra mile for their customers. I truly appreciate it & hope others have just as nice of an experience. read more

Not a bad place to visit. Interesting little tour of the caverns (you can only see the attraction with a guided tour). Price was a little higher than I'd expect for something that goes by fairly quickly, but we were entertained. But aside from the gift shop there's not much else to see or do. The "nature trail" is about a 3 minute walk up a hill and back down. Probably much more exciting if you visit with kids or are a huge fan of rocks. Likely a one and done visit for me (and others), where I think most people will get much more out of a place like Crystal Cave including return visits. read more

This is an interesting and comfortable place. The cave is small but interesting. The museum is "old timey" but fun. The souvenir shop has the normal touristy stuff, but it is not overpriced. There is a great selection of stones and jewery making items. The employees are polite and friendly. One of the employees saw us taking photos outside and came out and volunteered to take pictures. It appears no middle age people work here. The employees are either late teens/early 20s alongside those old enough to be their grandparents. First things first WOW! This was a amazing tour of the caverns. The people who work there are very smart and seemed friendly. They also had a gift shop with many minerals,rocks, gems, and crystals. They were all well priced except for a rock or mineral I don't really know that was $1580! You could buy quarts, gems, and even a figet spinner. When it was time to go into the caverns you walk through a red door and walk down a slope. The whole experience is about 30-45 minutes long and you walk about a quarter of a mile in the cavern. A child (12 and under) ticket cousts about $10 and a adult ticket cousts about $14. I would definitely recommend this to a person or a family if you are in the area. read more

When you first walk in you notice they have a wall of guns, rocks, gems, in a glass case they has not been cleaned in 30 years. A lot of the labels have fallen off, and owners never bothered to update. Very sad. The tour guild was very kind, and helpful, and over priced. I felt like the place really needs updating, including the smelly bathrooms. The gift shop had cool stuff,but lacked any cohesiveness. Take a look on the floor in the gift shop. Growing up in Bethlehem, I remember visiting the cavern as a kid, maybe on a school trip. Today I took my friend's son on an adventure underground which he basically thought was the coolest thing ever. But what I was really impressed with is how I still thought it was super cool too, maybe even more so than when I was a kid. It seems really simple, it's just a cave under ground, right? But think about it....how often does the average person ever get to go into a cave in their life? I'd venture to say rarely, if ever. And plus that, there is the river aspect with crystal clear water that looked shallow but was actually over 6 feet deep. The building you enter above ground is stuck in a time warp, something you might expect to find along Rt. 66 back in the 50s (somehow part of it's charm). But don't be fooled. Underground is a natural wonder which is totally worth seeing. You may even enjoy it more than your kids! read more

I do think it is a bit overpriced and I have no idea why there are 6 people working there at the same time.
