Found this through yelp when my mom was in the mood for "siete mares" and this popped up. She ordered the siete mares and wow, great portion with a side of HOMEMADE tortillas which she loved. Found this cute little mom and pop hole in the wall restaurant when I came out here for my best friends daughters cheer competition at the cow palace . Which is right across the street ! Food inside the cow palace is ridiculously high , we were hungry and it was break time so guess what ? Los Reyes across the street it was !!! It's a small but cute store front . There's table seating inside . You can stand in line and order or sit and order . The day I went it happened to be crowded inside but again I think it was because the cheer competition was going on and I guess I wasn't the only genius that said " let's go across the street " lol . Customer service was nice very friendly . I got shrimp cocktail which was very good very fresh , however they butterflied the shrimps which I didn't really like . I feel like it being butterflied made them shrivel up so instead of juicy bites of whole shrimp it was a little chewy . Guacamole and chips ... again fresh ! And the pupusas ! My daughter loved them which is a big deal because she's super picky . Overall cute place and authentic Mexican and Salvadorian food ! Gotta love the "mom and pop" joints! Located in the cuts off Geneva avenue in the city, Los Reyes Restaurant featured real authentic Salvadoran food. None of that hip, hipster cultural fusion cuisine BS we see as a result of gentrification. That's a whole other story. A real family business. I'm talking young adults helping out and taking orders from hungry customers while a maternal figure works the little kitchen and stove area. I don't want to assume their connection but it was heart-warming to hear their laughter as they all worked together in the back to make for the best customer service. My two pupusas came out hot with the sauce and the cabbage slaw. I appreciated the lady making my pupusas without cheese. She saved my stomach! I washed it down with a Modelo Negra! The taste of the pupusas hit the spot ! No question. The space is cozy, made for real intimate face-to-face eating, joking, and catching up. Thanks for the experience! Support local businesses! Absolutely delicious!! I rolled in seconds before they closed. The staff seemed tired and not especially excited that one more customer had arrived and was going to keep them 15 minutes longer at work. But despite the late hour and their exhaustion the pupusas were amazing. I was genuinely surprised at how much I enjoyed my meal and I walked out far happier than I had walked in. Seriously. I'm so happy I found this restaurant. The food was bomb dot com. The bf lives around cow palace so we were on this side of town. The restaurant is modest place. No frills, nothing fancy, simple sign out front. I feel like most people won't make the trek to this side of town but their pupusas were on point and very affordable. They had a large selection of pupusas including veggie ones with cheese and meat filled ones. We got the cheese with pork skin? And that was so flavorful. The BF and I also both ordered a dinner plate that came with rice, handmade tortillas, beans and salad. It was a lot of food. I order a chicken plate that was smothered in a delicious tomato base soup. Something I've never had before, and was blown away. Dinner plates were around 12-16 with big portions. Chicken was tender and were kind enough to sub my rice for more salad. It's nice to support local business and to try a pupuseria that's truly authentic and have locals approving the food as well. There's always a little trepidation when you see your favorite old restaurant has changed ownership, you just can't help comparing everything to the old place. Down-home Salvadorian is comfort food, change is just plain counterintuitive. Nothing to fear. If you were fond of Montenegro, the new Los Reyes will not disappoint.
