Everything here tastes homemade and made with quality ingredients. Even the fresh-squeezed orange juice is exceptional--bright, refreshing, and the perfect way to start the morning. On this visit, I ordered the molletes de chicharrón and the carne en su jugo, and both dishes exceeded expectations. The molletes were rich, satisfying, and packed with incredible flavor, while the carne en su jugo was comforting, perfectly seasoned, and absolutely delicious. Every bite reminded me why I continue to come back whenever I'm in the city. Another thing I appreciate is how fast and efficient the service is. Despite how busy they can get, the staff keeps everything moving smoothly without sacrificing quality or hospitality. If you're looking for an authentic Guadalajara breakfast, La Gorda is a must-visit. Between the fresh ingredients, traditional flavors, speedy service, and consistently outstanding food, it's easy to see why this has become one of my favorite breakfast spots year after year.

The prices are fair, however you are near to the American Zone so you'll find higher than average (compared to the rest of the city) prices. Of course, you should definitely order the torta ahogada. It's a Guadalajaran classic that is as messy as it sounds. Literally translating into "drowned torta" you'll likely need a fork and knife to attack this yummy monster. The spicy sauce adds a nice kick and keeps everything moist and delicious. Once you're done, opt for the classic Guadalarajan style flan/creme brulee called Jericalla. It's a little different than your traditional flan in that it has a burnt top similar to creme brulee. The flavor and texture is quite nice! Definitely make La Gorda your first stop if you intend to bar hop in the area. You won't be sorry!

When I first moved to GDL way back in the day, I lived walking distance from the market. There is no better place to start your day than in a market in Mexico. Back then, breakfasts were MEX$30. They have upped the price to MEX$40 but it is still the best deal in town. The carne asadas are not cheap, but that is because they are using good quality meats: arrachera de res, cordero y avestruz. One more thing that most tourists need to try is menudo. You know, the tripe and pig foot stew. I really don't like menudo in the USA, but I go crazy for it here at Alfonso's. I'm telling you, its about the ingredients. You should spend a little time walking around the market. It is mostly for wholesale, but there is about two blocks worth of retail volume sales. If you are feeling crazy, go get a crate of avacados because you will find some of the best and cheapest produce you have ever seen.
