Had an awful recent experience here. Ordered the Bistek Adovado (Spicy Steak) to go. When I bit into it I knew something was wrong. What was wrong was that it's pork, not steak. I call to inform them and I'm told "oh, I'm sorry, that's a typo on the menu." To their credit, they offered to remake my meal but only after I explained that's a pretty significant typo to make on a menu. He added they were slamming busy and that he could make it for me the next day. I understood. So the next day I got the Carne Asada. And it was horrible. Tasted of oil and very tough. The rice and beans that accompanied it had no discernable taste. The worst Mexican meal I've ever had. Unbelievably disappointed. The tacos are great and carnitas are wonderful if eaten on premises or taken a short distance (they do not travel well). They have Menudo on the weekends, which is quite good. Made a trek out here for a Friday lunch with three co-workers. A group of us have decided to search out good Mexican places for lunch. One of the group suggested this little hole in the wall. Now, one of the guys in our group is from Texas, and incredibly particular about his Mexican food. So I'll take his opinion as gospel. I will say first of all that he approved. The chips and salsa were like this... the chips were fresh and crunchy with no salt. The red salsa had probably too much kick and not enough flavor if you know what I mean. The green salsa was more of a hit. We also tried guacamole, and although it tasted good, it had too much of a tomato and onion ratio to avocado. That is, not enough avocado for my tastes. We all got various dishes. Everyone seemed pleased. The guys got combo dishes with two or three things on them. I went for the Huevos Rancheros and a couple of pupusas. The huevos plate was $6 for a huge portion with rice. Can't complain about that. The sauce on the huevos had a lot of bite to it but that was a good thing. I'm a fan of the pupusas as they had a good amount of pork in them. The Texas guy called it some of the best he had so far in our area, so that's high praise. It also pleased one of the group who does not usually eat Mexican food. So again, high praise to impress someone who doesn't usually go for it. If there's one area that elicited disappointment, it's that two of the guys weren't' a fan of the tamales on their plates (including the Texas guy). They thought they were dry and not that tasty. So it's 4 stars instead of 5. But it's a pretty solid 4. read more

Great food, lovely family business. We stoped in for quick breakfast of Huevos Rancheros, but had to try the taco's too! This is the real deal for good Mexican food. As a Californian, I am Mexican food snob and I can honestly say this place is very good! Great selection of choices on the menu! Went there once and it was absolutely dreadful. I'm not very picky and even if it's not the best I usually don't complain. But this shouldn't even qualify as Mexican. After trying to eat half of it, my fiancee and I threw our food away and went to enjoy taco bell instead which was 100% more authentic if that's possible. It was worse than anything you could microwave from the grocery store. I had the enchiladas and was shocked they would even serve this as "authentic Mexican". I will never go again. My wife and I went for dinner tonight. We missed going on my birthday on the 21st, so we were happy to discover that the carnitas were indeed good. I took home the enchiladas rojas, but also had tacos lengua (tongue) which passed the test with flying colours! The rice was average, as were the frijoles, the chips were good. The pico de gallo could have used more cilantro, as it was a little bland. Service was good. As mentioned, it is also a take out place but it does have a few tables for those who want to dine in. It was quite clean, as well, which is a plus.... Lunch specials are $5.75, BTW. Update on 8-16-08: Stopped in for lunch last week and ordered, again, from the back of the menu (Mexican as opposed to Tex-Mex). I had another taco lengua, and this time I tried a tamale filled with pork. The filling was great. The masa was not quite as tasty as some I've had (or made) but it was decent nonetheless. The third item I had was a sope with carnitas, cheese and lettuce and "sour cream" on top. That was quite good. I've eaten a fair amount of Mexican and Tex-Mex, and this place definitely qualifies as authentic, cheap, tasty, and clean. If you're a Latino food vet, though, there are a few things missing you might expect. But not anything that's core to the repertoire, just some of those regional dishes that can be so yummy. The carnitas are definitely the bomb, though, and ask for the shrimp ceviche which may or may not be on the menu. They usually have it, though. Finally, they've expanded since some of these reviews, so there's more room, and the ambiance has improved somewhat. But if you want authentic latino food, though, you know not to look for anyplace too swank. Absolutely worth patronizing every bit as much as many of the pricier places on Bridge St. read more

Strangely enough, it's not easy to find good mexican food in this area. Qdoba, Chipotle and the like are all well and good for lunch, but if you want to find the real deal it's sort of hard to come by. Los Mariachis is a great place to get some good, cheap mexican take out. I'm a big taco fan, so I got 3 tacos (spicy pork, al pastor, and tongue) and all 3 were great and flavorful and 2 bucks a piece. Awesome deal. We also tried some of the stuffed pepper, enchiladas, and tex mex tacos (which I think are more "americanized" tacos with flour tortillas), and all was very good. So, they're not reinventing the wheel here or anything, and it's not trying to pass itself off as some fancy pants restaurant, but this place is a great go to place to get Mexican. read more

Went for lunch based on all the good reviews here, but left disappointed. My husband and I both ordered the Mexican Platters ($15 a piece) and agreed that the quality was not worth the price. Perhaps the fact that it was lunch on a slow weekday can explain the very dry chewy beef bits, much like small nuggets of beef jerky, that had obviously not been cooked that day. The stuffed peppers were watery and the coating soggy and completely separated from the peppers, NOT appetizing. The rice and re-fried beans were pretty good, and the rice, especially, seemed freshly prepared. I house sat a few minutes away from this place and decided to try it out. We got our chips and salsa, a red salsa which was too hot to even eat by itself and I am a HUGE spicy person. The other sauce given was like a blended guac? They were delicious together. I ordered the cheese enchiladas verdes while the other part of my party ordered the red enchiladas. The green sauce was okay but not fantastic the red was pretty classic. I was very impressed with the beans, the taste and texture was awesome. I can not say the same for their rice. When I first got my plate it smelled like Mac and cheese and I think it was the rice which was a little flavorless but again good if you ate it with the beans. Overall I wasn't too impressed. And there is also a sign that states you have to pay for extra chips and salsa, I've never seen that at a Mexican restaurant before. read more

Don't let the exterior of this unassuming little mexican restaurant fool you. Don't let the interior throw you off either, it's clean but definitely low budget. The food though? Ok, first off, anybody that thinks Qdoba is good food, will probably not like this place. I don't believe they have any "cheese sauce" available. This is more of a hole in the wall, neighborhood Mexican restaurant. Reminds me of many good places I used to frequent in Los Angeles. The inside is bar bones. Nothing special, old looking, but the family run restaurant's staff is friendly and nice. I've always gotten the steak enchilada platter and never disappointed. Tasty steak, decent sized portions and reasonable pricing. I've been with others who have gotten the mole enchiladas and liked them, and my daughter really likes the chicken quesadillas. I've tasted them too, and would agree with her- the chicken is always very juicy and tasty. My only complaint is that if you want more chips/salsa, they charge you. I have NEVER been to a real Mexican restaurant where they charge you for more chips/salsa. That is just the usual thing for you to get free chips/salsa. Now that I know this, I ration my chip eating a bit, but it is annoying. Otherwise, a very good place to eat- just be prepared for it not being at all fancy. read more

Authentic, tasty, lovely Tex-Mex with a wonderful atmosphere. I was lucky enough to have lived down the street from Los Mariachis, so was able to take advantage of my location to try many different dishes. I was never disappointed. The chorizo is tasty without being too salty, the sauces and dips are fresh, the chips are amazing. The frijoles refritos are average, as well as the arrroz, but to be honest, I don't expect those things to steal the show. My favorites are the chimichangas, the chorizo nachos, and the chips and salsa they serve to everyone. The salsa is a delightfully fresh experience that I encourage everyone to try. If you dig flan, try it here, I promise you will not be disappointed. The portion is huge, melts in your mouth, and will leave you wanting more. Los Mariachis also carries a great selection of Mexican sodas. If you're into trying new drinks, I'd suggest starting with the Orange or Apple sodas. The family running the place are very sweet and will answer any questions you have about a plate. Don't forget to check out the Guadalupe painting on the rear wall for a glimpse of a unique use of spray paint. This is a great food alternative to all the yuppy hangouts in Phoenixville, and totally worth the going the three blocks off of Bridge Street to enjoy. read more
