Really lousy food, and what's with the no-tequila Margaritas? I ordered the chicken enchiladas. Only two choices: cheese or chicken, because everything on the menu was cooked a long time ago and is being pulled out of the fridge and microwaved for you. Yes, it's like eating lukewarm leftovers. The staff looks at you with a deer-in-the-headlights gaze, like you're from another planet, and can't answer any of your questions. The "margaritas" show up and it's just some mixer for margarita, in a plastic cup with ice and a straw. No tequila that I could taste. The food shows up and if it were a Costco frozen enchilada microwaved to a good temperature it would be 100 times better. This plate had yesterday's arroz, a little bit of lukewarm refried beans with un-melted cheese sitting on it, and four dry, barely warm enchiladas with no sauce of any kind, looking like they'd been in the fridge for a week. No chips, no salsa, no smiles, no music, no fun. This place sucks. read more

This is my all time favorite place in Madison to get Mexican food. As a law student, this place was so clutch when I was either drinking too much with my friends at a 'bar' review session OR I was up late studying and wanted to munch on some beautifully delicious birria tacos. Their food tastes very authentic and flavorful, I cannot get enough! I cannot speak much to anything outside of their Birria and rice/beans as well as chips and guac as that is pretty much all I get EVERY TIME. And I suggest you do the same! read more

I ordered online through Uber eats. Tacos were cheap and very good! The tortillas were good and the steak was very flavorful. I asked for hot sauce and they added some which I appreciate. Each taco was about $2.50 each and I ordered 2. However I ordered chips and guacamole and I received this insane looking green sauce that was extremely salty. A bummer because that was $7. The same owners own the restaurant on Odana rd.. So here is the full review and by the way, fairly experienced with Mexican food sense I'm a 53 year old Hispanic. The Gilman location is fair if you like tacos and after bar food, or your a college student. Service is not what it used to be but ok for a quick lunch. THE SO called restaurant on Odana is a hole different story. 1. Service is horrible 2. If you like a drink with your food, you have to go get it yourself in their little grocery store. 3. They will not ask you what type of tortilla you would like so they just give you corn tortillas. 4. They will not bring you a bill, you have to walk up and stand in a very slow line and explain to them what you had. These owners are simply taken advantage of there current customers that are Mexican and simply feel better due to the language barrier they most likely experience elsewhere. After about 10 mins of no one helping me there, I went back to the front and asked when someone will help me. The lady then started being rude to me and sent me back there where she came and told me to pour the water myself and told me not to be rude. Of course, I told her off and said she was being rude, and she threw me out. Horrible woman and poor customer service. If she doesn't want to work there anymore because it's too busy, then she should quit and not take it out on the customers. She is the worst in customer service. They really saved me last night - I was hungry, had no food around, it was 2:15am, and I had nowhere else to order from. They came through when nobody else likely would, and the food wasn't even bad! I was 100% expecting a lower quality meal because of how late I ordered at. I got a normal meal, normal food, good quality, everything was fine, even at 2:30am!!! I'm so glad I ordered from this place. I don't know if I would have even received actual food if I ordered from McDonalds. I read a few reviews and was worried based on how negative they were, but I think those reviews are outdated, because I received exactly what I ordered, with no problems, even though it was so close to their closing time. Normally I don't even leave a review at all, but this time I feel like I really should. Apparently other people have had problems with Los Gemelos, but I haven't had any problems, and just want to say that if you're in the situation I was in, where there's nobody else to order from because it's so late, just go for it. Los Gemelos really pulled through for me, and as a diabetic who had low blood sugar, I would have really, really been screwed if they didn't deliver what I ordered. I've learned to be wary of claims of being able to deliver quickly, especially late at night, but Los Gemelos was being honest. They got my order to me on time, it was exactly as I ordered it, and I doubt I would have received anything at all if I ordered from anywhere else. Absolutely love Los Gemelos, one of my favorite spots in Madison. Granted, it isn't the best Mexican food I've had in the U.S, but it's easily the best in Madison! The staff have always been very kind, and the service is consistently quick. If you are going to order online, I recommend getting there quickly as my only so-so experiences were from the tortillas getting soggy after waiting too long. By far the best place to get authentic Mexican food on campus. That's not saying a ton considering this is Wisconsin, but Los Gemelos does do a solidly good job on serving consistently good Mexican food. Upon walking inside, be prepared to be hit in the face with the smell of tortillas (a smell that will linger on your clothes for possibly forever, so maybe don't wear your favorite clothes here or meet up with a date later that night) and some Spanish music bumpin' on the TV screens. You can order take out right up by the counter, or sit down for a menu. The service here isn't great and it's not the cleanest restaurant I've been to, but it's comfortable enough to stay. Food: Chips/Salsa: Decent. I've definitely had fresher chips in other places with more flavorful salsa, but it's nice that they bring it out to you. Not unlimited though, which is a bummer. Salsa Verde: YES. SO GOOD. With your meal, they bring out bottles of different kinds of salsas to put on your food and they are incredible. Fajitas: Comes out on a sizzling hot plate with another plate of veggies, rice, refried brings, and of course some warm corn tortillas! Some of the meat was pretty burnt and greasy, the flavor is good but not anything out-of-this-world, but the whole ensemble was pretty cool to eat and put together. Tacos: $2.25 each and four different options. Awesome, simple, and served with cilantro and onion for some extra flavor. I do wish they had some specialty taco options though. If you're around State Street/downtown Madison and have a craving for Mexican food, this is the place to go. Outside of that, I'm not sure I would venture out to try this place out. The prices are also pretty high. I don't think I will be back. The waitress has made the overall flavor pretty disappointing. Horchata doesn't get better than this. The consistency of the cinnamon infused rice milk at Los Gemelos is perfection. It's spiced and sugared and oh so good. Many restaurants tend to dull this drink down so it's thin as water and way too sugary. Not Los Gemelos, nuh uh. They do it way right. Get some tacos while you're here too. The steak variety is served with cilantro and diced onion and is probably best, but I've had chicken a handful of times as well. If you're looking for something a tad heartier, go for the fajitas and prepare for a lot of food. I love that smokey grilled taste on the meat and veggies, nailed it. Also, they default to corn tortillas here, which is fine by me because they're delish but ask for flour if that's your thing. Service can be bothersome at times, especially if you're pressed for time, but that can't keep me away from their horchata. I have yet to find a better glass. read more

I can't possibly say enough good things about Los Gemelos! Not only do they have a fantastic variety of authentic (topped with only cilantro and onion) tacos, but the prices are incredibly cheap. My go-to meal is two campechano tacos and a side of beans. If you've never had these tacos before, you must try them! The filling is a mixture of spicy chorizo sausage with crispy steak pieces. They are so good that I can't help but crave them constantly. Steak tacos are also a great choice! Great Mexican food bang for the buck (or should I say peso) My daughter and I dropped in during the Madison Art Fair on the Square. We were headed to Chipotle, but after seeing some great Yelp reviews, we diverted off State Street to try this little hole in the wall taqueria on Gilman Street. Unless you're a big fan of formica, the decor barely rates one star, we're talking dive with a capital D. The place could use a real thorough cleaning as well. Our tabletop was a sticky, but with a napkin, some water and a lot of elbow grease, our eating space became acceptable. The flat screen on the wall featured the Mexican version of MTV which kept my 10 year old very entertained with the plot development of each video. (Boy gets girl, boy loses girl, boy is sad) The laminated menu contained primarily Mexican food truck fare (tacos, gorditas, burritos, tostadas, etc.) As a fan of the late, great Up and In podcast, I was overjoyed to see Boing! as one of the beverage options along with Jarritos and horchata. But with ala cart prices from $2 to $3 for many of the items, it encouraged us to sample a variety of items. The cheese quesadilla ordered by my daughter was a revelation. Rather than your standard thin layer of shredded jack cheese pressed between a couple of tortillas, this baby featured a crispy masa pocket crammed full of melted queso fresco cheese. She quickly wolfed it down and ordered a second one, proclaiming this version to be far superior to what she's consumed at Pasqual's or Chipotle. I ordered a steak taco, a pork gordita and a chorizo & potato sopes. The steak taco came in a double corn tortilla topped with finely chopped onions, queso fresco and cilantro. Unlike the pungent onions that plagued a recent meal at La Mestiza, these onions were fresher and the smaller dice complimented the meaty goodness of this taco. The steak was well seasoned and perfectly prepared. The pastor gordita, which had the same masa exterior as the quesadilla was also a culinary delight. The crispy exterior was a perfect foil to the melt in your mouth goodness of the pork filling. The chorizo sopes was a solid offering, but it was a little greasy and did not meet my lofty expectations after enjoying the steak and pork offerings. The basket of chips that we were served were average. My daughter did not like having to apply the salsa from a squeeze bottle onto the chips. The salsa was watery and a little bland compared to the other items we enjoyed. Service was a little chaotic. The server that took our order was not very attentive (it was a rare occurrence to get water glasses and / or the chip basket refreshed), but halfway through the meal, we were adopted by another server who did a great job. The total bill with tip was about $20, a great value for the quantity / quality of the food received. I definitely plan on returning to try more of the menu. read more

Best Mexican food on campus. Hands down. Not even a questionnnnnn. Every single dish I've had has been fresh, flavorful, and not too heavy. The queso blanco they use is amazing--- it's the perfect mix of salty and fluffy. Shredded, tender chicken makes every dish soooo very satisfying! The tacos, gorditas etc. are small and cheap (around $3 each), so you can decide your portion and not have to overpay or take home leftovers if you're not feeling like it! Also, one taco makes the perfect proteinous snack if you're on the run. You order at the counter, so it's no problem getting takeout. Do yourselves a favor and eat here! Amply filled tacos, street greasy but not too much, delivered rolled like a cigar but warm. Well stuffed enchiladas with the chicken a tad under-seasoned and the beans and rice just being their non-assuming Mid-Western interpretation of Mexican sides. The mild to hot salsa which came complementary definitely helped but could have used more of it. Take it for what it is, your cheap Taco place a stone's throw from Campus, sure it's also a stone's throw from downtown but the food's not really aimed at the more expensive crowd. I guess depends on how annoying they are being. Bottom-line? Affordable, ample but needs more flavor. read more

Mexican food right on State St! Well, close enough, it's right off State on Gilman. I can't thank my co-worker enough for his recommendation. They have daily specials, selected mexican items that comes in a 'combo', which means, in mexican terms, beans and rice =) Complimentary chips and salsa if you choose the dine-in option. But for me mostly Los Gemelos is a grab and go place since it's very close to where I work, we would call to order ahead, saves us more time that way ~~ Their sopes and gorditas are my favorite. For sopes I love the combination of beans, steak or pastor, cheese, avocado and lettuce put together on a thick flour tortilla. It's a very refreshing feeling (and taste) to bite into one of those. The gorditas are a slight different version, your choice of fillings wrapped in a Mexican styled pita pocket, as I like to call it. Do note that even though vegetarian options are being offered, I have found the potatoes option just didn't go well with their sopes. The gorditas are fine with potato fillings, but it's still not my top choice. Service has always been prompt and friendly. No problems with food hygiene or quality in the 8 or so times I've been there. read more

it was back during my first year as a graduate student and my study budies were hungry after tons of hours studying at Memorial library. It was midnight and most of the libraries were closed. So, we were trying to find a good spot to study and to munch to keep us awake. None of the coffee shops were open so destiny took us to this place. It was obviously not a study spot, but was indeed an affordable and delicious food place. We had some tacos, with a basket of free chips. That night, we were thankful. On my next visits, I gotta try some other menus, like chicken quesadillas and tortas with chicken. The latter came in a big portion so I needed a box to go! their boing was refreshing! As much as I enjoyed the food here, I was reluctant to give it a four or five star rate, as ehm, they need to work on the cleanliness of the restaurant. This three-star (scored generously) experience is really half on me for not spotting the warning signs. First of all, ordering vegetarian at a place known for its meat dishes is probably unwise. You've effectively excluded yourself from the things everyone else recommends. Second, ordering Mexican food while at seminar in Wisconsin when you spend the rest of the year living four hours from the Mexican border is probably also a bad idea. Third, ordering any food at all within a half mile of a busy college campus is universally known to be a misstep. But I was very hungry and had heard good things, so ahead I went with my bad idea self. I saw fajitas, and that sounded good. It probably should have been a warning sign that the vegetarian fajitas were the same price ($12) as the meat ones, but I instead took it to mean I could expect great things. Then I went home and realized that I'd been given reheated tortillas, rice, tomato, avocado, and about three pounds of sauteed onions and peppers. And they weren't even interesting peppers--just red and green bell peppers, with nary a hint of any spice. Since I was given two tiny cups of unmemorable salsa, I got through the sides and two tortillas worth of the veggies before giving up in boredom and despair. So, for $14 after tax and a small to-go tip, without a drink, I'm still hungry and may have to go back out for food. I would go with two stars here, except the meat dishes coming out of the kitchen while I waited for my carryout looked quite interesting, so benefit of the doubt will be given and I'll just write this one off as a bad call and file Los Gemelos under "not recommended for vegetarians." read more
