Went here on Sunday for lunch. Quickly got a table and small serving of chips and salsa. Then the challenges began. No refills on drinks until asked multiple times. Finally went up to kitchen to ask for chips. A mariachi band was playing for a party in the side room and the staff was more concerned about watching them than serving the rest of the tables. The place is super spacious - allowing of quick seating and comfortable away from others. Plenty of parking. And the food is great! The chips and pico de gallo they served when we were seated were fresh and had good flavor. The torta was served on a telera style bread - my favorite for tort as because it's the perfect texture to hug the shredded cheese chicken, beans, lettuce, tomato, avocado and cream. This was the tastiest of the dishes. The beans and rice served on side were also super tasty. The sope was made of cornmeal with good consistency. That was topped with the same ingredients as the torta so you can't go wrong. It was great! The burrito was equally delicious, but I think the star of the show were the enchiladas suizas. You can choose between small and large and I will say a small is plenty for four. You can also choose spicy or non-spicy. We always get the mixto which includes steak, chicken, chorizo, pork, onions, grilled jalapenos, and potato. It's a beautiful dish and delivered on a lit grill to keep things hot. It's served on a grill plate so keep it hot while you enjoy. Meat lovers will enjoy this! Sure it's a little greasy with all the meat, but soak it up in a tortilla with fresh cilantro/onions and then add some salsa and it's delicious. Not a meal you can have everyday, but nice to bring people together. There is plenty of seating, the staff is amazing, and if you're thirsty, try their horchata! We had a mixed table of half and half and our waitress consistently ignored us, went to every table with all Spanish speaking consumers besides us. The chip bowl was nowhere near as big enough as it should've been, and the service wasn't around to refill our chips or salsa. The food came out relatively quickly, but the drinks didn't. Our drinks arrived to our table practically as we were finished eating. In addition, our margarita didn't even have much of an alcoholic flavor, and we even had to ask if we got a non-alcoholic version. The horchata was good though. The flavors of the food overall weren't anything amazing. The steak was steak, the chicken was chicken, but honestly, you couldn't really tell that we were eating Mexican food. My plate of mixed chicken and steak fajitas was bland, and the corn tortillas didn't help with the dryness. The rice was also dry, with lettuce and tomatoes sprinkled randomly on top of the rice and bean plate. The flavors weren't very cohesive with each other, and it was hard to eat overall. sitting here feeling a bit pensive about the whole experience. i ordered the chimichangas, and one of those metal plates of meat and peppers that has a flame underneath it. the wow factor was definitely there, but the taste was just okay. it's hard to mess up mexican, and i wouldn't go so far as to say la hacienda messed it up, it's definitely got that authentic mexico feel. our server was a bit pushy, she came over about 5 times within 7-10 min to ask what we wanted, it got to the point where i had to verbally shoe her away. other than that she was nice. i'll be back, but only because of proximity to my house, not because i really want to be back. read more

We asked for no lettuce in the vegetariano burrito and the server seemed to major misunderstand what we wanted - they brought out a burrito tortilla with a bunch of unmelted cheese and a couple of tomatoes in it. There were no beans, no rice, nothing hut this nasty cheese. The large lime margarita tasted like a stale premix for little to no tequila in it. I have been going to this restaurant for a few years and it is, by far, my favorite Mexican restaurant in Madison. Their meals are huge and their margaritas are to die for. I have always been seated quickly and have been well attended to by the staff. They give you salsa and chips while you wait for food and it's probably the most basic salsa but I would honestly go there just to eat vats of it. Their dinners come with beans and rice, both are delicious. I always end up taking home leftovers because the servings are pretty big. I was not a big fan of their beans this last time I went - they seemed kind of watered down or something, but normally they are delicious. You can get your margaritas blended or on the rocks and they have so many flavors to choose from. Your size options are small, medium, large, or pitcher. Their sugar/salt rims seem to be a bit inconsistent. Sometimes they have them, sometimes they don't. They're also open late so they're good for a late night appetizer or drink!
