The best Mexican we have found in Colorado's highlands ranch area so far. We just moved from Southern California where Mexican food is so authentic everywhere. Los dos never disappoints, the only problems are parking and waiting for a table but there is a good reason for both the problems and that is because this is the best Mexican food in South Denver the staff is always great food is always good and while you are waiting the bartender is always willing to help with one of their great margaritas. Decent tacos, service usually good, great salsa

I have been going to Los Dos over then years and have enjoyed their food and their margaritas. I went back today and was treated very poorly. The $11.00 (large) margarita had little or no tequila in it, just the mix. You would think that with a 16 oz margarita you would feel something; there was absolutely nothing! I mentioned this to the waiter and he said he would have it removed from the bill. The floor manager ( a younger thin woman) came over and said there would be no adjustment because I drank it. You would think that being a regular for over ten years would mean something to them. It doesn't. Being treated as though we were trying to screw them over a margarita was insulting. We have been coming to this restaurant for going on 15 years. Today will be last time I will set foot in this place. I will never recommend it to another soul on earth. The staff were beyond rude. First placing us, a party of 7, in a booth next to the kitchen. There was no way there was enough room at the end of the table for 3 adults to eat. I asked to move, so we were then placed at a table practically in the kitchen. The table was covered in standings water. There was another table available but was being saved for party not yet arrived. RUDE inconsiderate ass!!!!! The waitress was pleasant and the food was ok. Not worth the price. The quality has really fallen and is nothing special. Regardless, of this review, people, especially people from Highlands Ranch will still come, where else will they go. Glad we have options. Fabulous family Mexican restaurant in 'burbs. Solid Tex-Mex execution of the standards, friendly service in a family-style setting. We are here at least once a week. Love the street tacos, enchiladas en salsa verde, and the green chile plate with nice big chunks of pork in a chile warm enough to get your attention. This location did a wonderful job of stationing someone outside the front door widen they were closed for renovations for a couple of days. The young man had a discount coupon and directions for the nearest other location. We really appreciated the attention to the regular customers while they were closed. There are more innovative and fancier Mexican places, but how can you beat a neighborhood restaurant we can walk to, with great prices and a friendly "Hola amigos!" Food is good, service is lacking. We called ahead to make reservations for 6:30. Got there at 6:30 and were told the "wait" list was another 25-30 minutes. Given that businesses are hurting right now (especially local businesses) my husband and I decided to get food to go yesterday. I was very disappointed with the food and the fact that I called and the staff did not seem to care. My family and I always come and eat at this place. We ordered steak street tacos, horchatas, and a sweet rice. When we got home I looked at the sweet rice and it looked like cottage cheese. I told my husband that it looked weird, but I still gave it a try and I had to spit it out. It was so bad and tasted like the milk was spoiled. I called and it was frustrating because they couldn't find my ticket. I just wanted to inform them about the sweet rice so that they were aware of it and not give it out to customers. They handle the situation really bad and when I asked for a refund they didn't call me back to return the money back to my card. We have been here a handful of times and always has been a 3-4 star experience whether dining in or ordering take-out. Food is above average, hence their rating, service OK, and speed average. Like I said overall a 3-4 rating. Earlier this year we put in a $60 to go order for dinner. I went to pick it up and waited a few minutes but got the order in good time. I paid and proceeded to head home. Upon getting home we opened our take out order and it was missing the 1 order of chicken tacos we ordered, strike 1 (mistakes happen). We had enough other food that we all split our items and made due. I called back the next day and spoke to a gentleman, not sure of his name, and he offered to either credit us the order on our next visit or refund it. For simplicity I vowed to have it refunded to my card. 3 weeks later when I got my credit card bill there was no credit ever applied, strike 2. Today I called to notify them that the initial error had not been corrected. Their proposed solution, credit it back, strike 3!!! SO basically your solution, the third attempt to get my order correct, is to do what you already said you would do? Los Dos Potrillos you are OUT of our Mexican options when we decide to go out. There are other great options around like Mama Sol Cocina at 6439 S. Broadway and Mama Sol Cocina is a lower price point with GREAT MEXICAN food! For those that have not checked it out I would highly recommend it. In the future I would propose to management that they offer something out of the norm when a customer has to call in 3 times for an order to be placed or corrected. A $20 gift card would have been a nice gesture. You won't see us again and although I made that clear on my call you still simply offered to credit the cost of the tacos. Food is great. We are long time customers and the food is always excellent. We particularly enjoy the carnitas, street tacos, and chili rellenos. The salsa is spicy, the guacamole fresh, and the flavors good. I'm only giving three stars because of the takeout. Occasionally, we order extra meals because we live far away and it's nice to have food ready on a busy night. Unfortunately, our takeout orders have been incomplete on several occasions. When you pay the price of good food, you expect it to be in the bag. The way Los Dos ties up their takeout bags, it's almost impossible to check your order before you leave without looking paranoid. However, that is what you have to do unless you want to give your money away. It's happened too often to us to be excused as a simple oversight. Great food but check your bags! read more

I'm fairly new to Colorado coming from Texas and my husband and I are very picky about our Mexican food. So we stopped by this hole in the wall restaurant on a Saturday and judging by the crowd and wait, figured it was probably decent and we were not disappointed. In fact, we have found our new Mexican home! Los Dos Potrillos is by far the best and most authentic Mexican food we have had since moving here almost 2 years ago. Ever been to Long Beach CA and eaten at any of the Brite Spot Mariscos Mexican restaurants or cafes? This is almost the exact same menu. There are some differences, but they are superficial. Now this is a good thing since the Brite Spot(s) is considered to be some of the best Mariscos and Mexican fare in all of Southern CA. A place where you expect to find top Comida Mexicana. But sadly.... Los Dos Portillos has a bit of an Acapulco or El Toritos design vibe inside and the tables seem to turn quickly. Service is about the same as well. The restaurant noise level was a bit higher than other like setups, but that's ok because it adds to the atmosphere. We were eating at the newly opened Highlands Ranch location off Broadway just S of C470. On this visit we had the Ceviche, Seafood Shrimp and Asada Street Tacos. Ceviche was OK, but not a complete constructed serving. Lack of attention to detail turned up an uneven mix of the molded serving plate with one side having almost all of the fish, and the other almost all of the veg and aromatics. The lime "dressage" was lacking throughout as well, almost as if they ran out of the day's prep and scrambled to get new up for service. The fish was not as firm as I would expect after ample time of required "chemical cooking". Seafood Shrimp Tacos was more than an ample serving. No lack of shrimp here although the shrimp did taste like it came from a previous frozen state - a couple pieces actually had a tad bit of freezer burn. The plate is served with the shrimp over the top of two flour tortillas. Issue at hand; the shrimp served on top of the torts was VERY moist/wet which make the tortillas soggy by the time it reached our table. At that point they were no longer tacos I'm afraid. The Asada Street Tacos tasted barely OK, but again there was a lack of detail in the prep and presentation. The tortillas needed to be pan heated more. They need to be almost on the verge of being toasted and remain flexible, not limp steamed or perhaps microwaved 2-plys. The meat itself was again ample, but it tasted as if it were many hours old and then quickly reheated in a pan or flat top before served. I cut a piece of the meat in half and you could see a distinct cooked crust core, surrounded my another crusting of the final cook. The plating was all over the place. Of the 4 tacos on the plate, it looked as if the tortillas were plopped on the plate, a generic spoonful of the meat kind of generically covered all 4 tots, and then the same heavy handed doling was done with the onions and cilantro. Very sloppy requiring me properly divi up all the ingredients and put them all evenly across all for thin cornmeal platforms. The hot sauce served with the plate was a pleasant surprise being what tasted like a habanero based treatment - exactly as I would expect from a So. Cal place. Price wise, the menu is about right. Service wise, it's as good or slightly better than most. On this particular visit however I did not enjoy myself. But - I will try it again after a month of so giving this new location time to further settle in. Look for a future update. read more

I ordered a taco salad for dinner. It was actually like a more like a humungous taco than a salad! Very little lettuce and a couple carrot shreds, tons of meat, cheese and guac! Not very healthy, but oh boy was it delish! Also had the chile relleno nachos as an appetizer and I am still dreaming about them because they are amazing! I also tried my hubby's carne aside burrito and it was so good. The food here is incredible. The service was great too! We had a fairly large party (10 people) and the service was impeccable. We came here based on the good reviews. While the service was good and there were some high lights, my brother's meal was pretty much inedible, thus 3 stars. The meal started with chips and salsa. The salsa was spicy and delicious. Our server was nice and helpful when answering our questions, and was excellent in making sure we had plenty of water, chips, and salsa. My mom and I shared the Los Dos Portrillos Combo plate, making it all vegetarian. The lady told us that the refried beans were not vegetarian, so we did black beans for everything. While we enjoyed our plate, and were quite presently surprised by how good just simple black beans were, no flavors were out of this world or unique. And it was quite messy. Kind of middle of the road. My brother ordered the fried pork burritos, and it was pretty gross looking and in taste for him. A majority of the pork bits were rock solid and tough, deeming inedible. When we inquired to the waitress if this was normal, she said it was. This was almost unbelievable and it should have been taken off the bill as my brother was obviously displeased. Overall, this is an ok Mexican restaurant. The chips and salsa were the highlight of the meal. My mom and I would have appreciated a vegetarian section on the menu or an easier way to see what is vegetarian such as a symbol. read more

The food here is actually good. However even on a slow Sunday Memorial Day Weekend, the service is beyond slow. The food is probably a 4, however the lack of any personality by the server in the bar area today makes me quest if I'll return. This isn't the first time this month that the server was slow, unfriendly, and lacked any personality. Yay! We found our first 5-star Mexican restaurant in Denver! Los Dos Potrillos is tucked into a strip mall, and it was just what I needed last night. It was about 6:30 pm on a Monday, and the place was busy (always a good sign). It was about a 15 minute wait for a table, but we decided to sit at the bar. We were treated to the kindness of our bartender, who made us sangria from scratch (and let us taste the store-bought brand that they also served - his was amazing!). The salsa was incredible, just the right amount of heat, one of the best I've tasted. The menu is overwhelmingly large, which usually concerns me, but not to worry here. Everything is homemade and delightfully delicious. I settled on steak fajitas, one of my favorites. The meat was well seasoned and cooked. The bell peppers and onions were fresh and caramelized just right. My husband had chicken mole, a complex blend of flavors and textures, and he loved it. With an Entertainment coupon in hand and the ladies from work, we ventured to Los Dos Potrillos today; it is not a bad restaurant. We were celebrating several things so we had virgin margaritas because the Big Red H (the company we work for) does test randomly for those who celebrate at lunch. If the mix is an indication of things to come, I bet they have good margaritas. Like Karli, I judge by the chips and salsa and they were quite tasty, especially with the great tasting guacamole served in a molcajete. My lunch was Tacos al carbon and were plentiful and fairly tasty. My gripe was an after taste from burnt onion mixed with the meat. Not horrible but not great. This is solid but not the best Mexican food in Denver; normally a three star place. However, I think what I have read from other reviews and from my experience, this place is outstanding in the salsa and guacamole department which is why I have given the 4th star. And part of that star also comes from the location which is fairly close to work in the Highlands Ranch area. Also, this interior looks like the courtyard of a hotel in Mexico, a little dark but relaxing. Price for lunch will run you about $12.00 which is a bit steep but considering the size of the bountiful portions, and in our case where we shared the guacamole (enough to add to the leftover box) and virgin margaritas it was really not too bad. (This does not include our coupon which cut the price in half and really made the meal worthwhile). read more

I stopped by this place for a quick bite during my lunch break, and was not disappointed. As soon as I sat down I was served chips and salsa and water. I really liked the salsa...not chunky, with a little kick. Great chips too...thin and crispy. I browsed the menu and decided to order a couple of a la carte items, which was much more cost effective. My food came out quickly, even though one of them was a special order. I first tried the crispy beef taco. It was VERY good. Perfectly seasoned meat, crispy shell, and tons of lettuce and cheese. One of the best tacos I've had in awhile. Next I started on my chorizo and rice burrito (actually the chorizo and bean burrito, substituting rice for beans). It came smothered with green chile and melted cheese. I was surprised at its size...took up the whole plate...and a steal at $4.75! Again, one of the best burritos I've had recently. Everything about it was delicious...including the green chile which was a little spicy...great flavor. When ordering my server assured me that there were no onions....and she was RIGHT! A rarity at Mexican restaurants. I finished eating and checked the clock: only 30 min. had passed since I walked in. The service was great up until this point. It took the waitress another 10-15 min. to finally bring my check. (This is what cost them a star with my rating). In her defense, the place had almost completely filled up while I was sitting there...and it's not a tiny place. But she did walk by my table several times while rushing around, without even looking at me to see if I was done.
