I subscribed to the LA Times to keep local newspapers alive. This one deserves to die a slow painful death.It's an amateurish local news put on by high school students rag, so I cancelled my subscription online. I was pleased that they made cancellation easy. So easy that they don't even send a confirmation that you would need to look at. I had not been checking my credit card statements and just found that they never cancelled and have been charging me for about a year after I cancelled. I paid for a two year digital subscription to the LA Times a few months ago. I had previously subscribed to the delivered. paper for about 25 years, and my parents always got the paper delivered when I was growing up. It used to be a great paper with very high quality articles, opinion pieces, sports, and entertainment. In fact when I went away to school in the 80s I would buy the Sunday edition at a liquor store in Cincinnati, at great cost, because I missed the writing so much. I thought it must be like that now when I recently resubscribed. Sadly, the current newspaper is of very low quality in terms of the writing. There are still a handful of great writers but most of the articles are poorly written with no cohesion, little useful information, and no obvious editing; essentially terrible writing. And often there is an accompanying photo that has nothing to do with the article. At first I thought AI was writing the articles but I believe AI would do a better job. I already knew that the subscription price of $160 was not refundable but cancelling just now felt so good just on principle. This is a great paper and we need it. Despite the incredible hostility towards print papers and the hatred from the internet in general, it's a true miracle that this paper exists. The writers are great, Steve Lopez, Sandy Banks, Bill Plaschke, Michael Hiltzick, Harry Littman, Mary McNamara, LZ Granderson, Robin Abcarian, Amy Kaufman, Gustavo Arellano, George Skelton, Mikael Wood, Mark Swed, Mark Barabak, Steve Padilla, and Editor Allison Wisk. So suck it up, sourpuss critics, most of the world loves this paper! The owner, Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong, should get an award for keeping real journalism alive. Only comment, the customer service from their 800 number needs improvement and the paper should be printed on 100% hemp paper, the same paper the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the Constitution were printed on. I just wanted to be a good Samaritan and help out this kid, who needed to sell subscriptions of the LA Times to get a scholarship. What ended up happening is that: 1) I never received the physical papers for the LA Times per the subscription I purchased 2) Got billed twice within a month of activating my subscription, and got charged for a "premium issue" 3) Attempted to cancel my account via phone call and through email 4) Have continued to receive invoices It has been a nightmare to try and resolve any of these issues. Look, I would guess that I would have absolutely no issues with the actual content that the LA Times is producing if I were to ever receive the actual LA Times, but I can safely say that for me, this has been the single worst subscription experience I've ever had. This paper is something you would expect from a small rural town. It has gone downhill and now the delivery service is horrible. You never know when it will arrive IF it arrives at all. We live in a condo and now they stopped delivering it to our door. We are seniors and we have to walk down to the lobby to get it, but we never know when it will get there. Have you ever attempted navigating the LA Times website??? Don't try, save yourself a "HUGE" amount of frustration!! Unless you're interested in the latest crossword puzzle, locating an article from the LA Times, published two days prior is impossible on the website. Additionally, 3 or for weeks ago in the "WEEKEND" issue the "TIMES" ran an article on the best bottled water too purchase. Seriously!! We're in an environmental crises and need to cut usage of plastic and they suggest the best water in plastic water bottles!! Whom ever wrote the article should be fired!! Note, LAX has cut interior vendors from selling water in plastic bottles and asked its public to switch to refillable water containers NOT plastic! A year ago over content dissatisfaction and after 45 years reading the LA Times, I trimmed my subscription down from 7 days weekly to weekends. Cutting Saturday delivery is next. I'm sad for the wonderful people who deliver my paper. Less money for them as customers cut readership. LA Times Customer Service is the worst excuse for that function I've seen anywhere , in a long time . It's like there are no humans there anymore . Today i received a Notice saying my account - which I closed for poor service issues back in November 2016 - threatening to report me to the Credit Agencies for $14 that I don't even owe them & they have never billed me for. I am unaware of any previous balance with them, so I went Online to see what could have caused this to pop up 4 months later. I am unable to Log In online because their site says there are Cookies preventing me from getting in -- but giving no further directions . So ,I tried calling their Customer Service Center at 213-283-2274 , finally got past all the stupid prompts and mis-directions . But next, I was left on endless hold until their equipment - probably in the Phillipines ----disconnected me!!! I do not owe them $ 14.69 and they have NEVER sent me a Bill for anything since my subscription was terminated in November 2016. Their Collection agent claims I ignored "previous efforts" to resolve this issue. BUT NO PREVIOUS calls or letters were sent to me stating I owed anything. This is a big lie, and this kind of stupid accounting procedures was the reason I terminated my subscription 4 months ago, after being a subscriber for over two decades. They can never get it right , they will not credit you if you go away on vacation and stop your subscription, and they are always sending confusing billings that stretch over months ahead. Whoever is in charge of this Dept ought to be fired . LA Times Subscription Dept caused this problem to begin with, and now they have the nerve to send me to Collection for $14.69 ?????? How dare you ? No wonder your newspaper is losing its longtime subscribers . BUYER BEWARE ! These people are incompetent. Please note this stellar review of the Los Angeles Times Newspaper is for their digital distribution... or more succinctly their lack of a consistent digital distribution their newspaper. After several fruitless phone calls to their (lack of) Help Desk, I've come to the conclusion that should I have the good fortune of receiving an email notification that the digital version of the newspaper, it would be a miracle. Most days I don't receive an email notification, but today they've exceeded my lowly expectations! They sent me 4 notifications for todays paper! The Subscription Phone number is a joke. I tried changing my subscription plan and was on hold for 20 minutes before someone answered. After telling her what I wanted to do, she transferred my call, and I was left on hold for another 25 minutes, finally hanging up. Sent a letter instead to their Customer Service Department in El Segundo explaining my change request and asking to be contacted to confirm. I highly doubt anyone will follow through with this request if it's any indication how unresponsive they are with their so called " Subscription Phone Number" line. I have been reading the Los Angeles Times for over 45 years but no more. When I received my credit card payment for a continuation of my on-line subscription, I phoned them and asked them to reverse the charge and cancel my subscription. The rep said he could not do that because I'd agreed (in the 5,000 word legal document) to keep renewing until I canceled. Now, I have other companies I deal with who have similar policies, but they ALWAYS email me a couple of weeks before my subscription renews verifying I intend to renew. I encountered an offer by the L.A. Times online and decided to avail myself of a trial subscription. I am a literate woman--I graduated with straight A's through Bachelors, Masters, and Doctoral degrees--but the online offers by the L.A. Times seem neither honest nor clear. I signed up for what appeared to be a limited 4-week subscription for which I would pay $4.00 per week (thus, $16 per month) for a digital copy of the Times. I had fulfilled my part of the bargain; then it was time for the L.A. Times to fulfill theirs. They sent me copies of the newspaper, yes, and (as with all bills), I trusted that they would deduct what I owed, when I owed it ($16 per month); then, if required, I'd receive a renewal notice. I DID NOT. I assumed then, that the Times continued the newspapers beyond the trial period to encourage subscription. I pay my bills when I receive them, but wasn't billed further (and, had I been, I'd have cancelled, since I signed up for a particular weekly rate).
