For me I appreciated the fact the enchiladas were not drowned in either a red or green sauce and the nice part was they were able to stand on their own. I was able to enjoy the enchilada wrap and able to taste the actual ingredients. The staff were extremely efficient and respectful of everyone in there. I'm an old building buff and I like the way they were able to bring the Mexican atmosphere while leaving things like the original ceiling and other parts of the historic building alone. Came in today and ordered 4 tacos. My first taco had a piece of plastic in it that I bit into and was in my mouth. I lost my appetite after that. I showed my waitress the piece of plastic. Looked like maybe from a plastic knife or a plastic lid. She took it to the back and someone else came to my table and basically accused me of being a lier, saying they have no plastic in the back! Overall, it was decent. Service was good on a busy Tuesday afternoon (late lunch). I got the Enchilada Fabulousa plate which includes 3 enchiladas: one chicken, one cheese & onion, one ground beef, with sour cream. It was an average interpretation of American enchiladas. I was in the mood for enchiladas so it hit the spot. It had a ton of cheese. I would have enjoyed more red sauce to cheese ratio. The chicken enchilada was my favorite, followed by the cheese&onion. But that's just what I usually favor. The ground beef was good. The salsa was... a bit odd. My husband said it tastes like it hung out in the fridge awhile. I think he was right. It was real cold and kind of bland. It just wasn't my thing. The chips were very bland and needed salt. But, I appreciate that I can easily add salt, which I did. Those who are trying to limit their salt intake would be able to eat the chips too. My husband got a burrito thing with refried beans on the inside and pork chili and cheese on top. I ordered the Chalupa Platter, then was brought out a plate with two hard flat round corn tortillas topped with lettuce, guacamole and tomatoes. I.E. tostadas. I pointed this out to the server. She told me that was the Chalupa Platter and even brought me the menu to point out my order. I grew up surrounded by Mexican immigrants, therefore have had a lot of Mexican food. I never before was served just tostadas. But according to Wikipedia they can resemble each other. Okay ... But it def tasted just like a tostada. I was disappointed. Absolutely horrible food, steak was dry and tasted like dog food, terrible portion size, the shrimp were tiny, the margaritas had 0 tequila in them and tasted like fruit juice. Completely overpriced. I would recommend going out of atchison for Mexican or next door to Pete's steakhouse which is better quality and half the price. read more

A very small place. We were a largish party in town to celebrate a special occasion. They very kindly reserved a table for us so our 80-year old mother didn't have to wait. The waitress kept separate tickets for us. The food was good, if under seasoned. Almost everyone in our party had to add salt. The salsa was sweet, reminiscent of ketchup. Our savior! After having a very poor experience at another Mexican place down the road from here, we made our way over in the hopes that they had fried ice cream and cheap margaritas. They did! A bit disappointed on my first visit here, as this seems to be one of the more recommended dinner spots in Atchison. My jalapeño margarita was good, but all the food (including the chips and salsa) was on the bland side. I had a couple enchiladas that were lukewarm in the middle and too dry. Service was friendly but a bit slow, and our server seemed to have forgotten to bring us our checks, so we got up to ask for them eventually. Staff is friendly, prompt and the best way to start off your meal is with their great Margaritas that they always make to perfection- I am picky too! The chips and salsa are good while enjoying your drink then a must to try different things and on the menu. We have never been disappointed! The place is small and quaint, nothing at all fancy yet the decor, drinks, food and service makes the whole experience worth going! As this was the last meal of our vacay we wanted Mexican, especially since our son just started eating tacos, very plain meat and cheese but hey, that's a start of exploring different foods other than McDonald's that we use to have to get him while we sat and ate our meal. I wanted him to like decent home made stuff too and this was definitely the place. Service was friendly and prompted. We were greeted within seconds and seated right away. She handed us menu's, chips, and salsa then asked us what to drink. I asked about the jalapeño margarita but she wasn't sure how spicey it was. So recommended the traditional but I was a bit of a risk taker and so glad I did. It was delish. We ordered and got our food soon after. Soooo good. We all devoured it. Waitress kept checking on us and I really liked that the taco were closed up with the meat and cheese so it wasn't as messy for my son. We payed for it after and my son totally admired the flags that were hung cuz they were from Coco the movie that he loves. Yup. Good choice for sure. read more

So if you have been to Atchison, you know that there really aren't many places to choose from when it comes to non fast food sit down meals. We went to watch my brother play some college ball, and came across this little gem. Apparently, this is a very popular place and small. You know it is a good place when the college football team frequents said establishment. Talk about authentic and yummy. Chips, salsa, and queso helped fill our tummies as we waited for our food and tried to warm up. Margaritas are to die for! Added bonus, they don't skim on the tequila. That will put some hair on your chest! Smothered burritos are amazing, as are the enchiladas, fajitias, and well really anything and everything. Do you have that kid that is picky and only eats chicken fingers?? Well guess what!!?? They have them and also hamburgers for your teen that doesn't like to try new things. With respect to a prior review, the Mexican-American cuisine of Kansas is genuine and authentic. Lopez de Mexico is a good example of the style. Mexican immigrants came to Kansas in the late 19th Century to build and maintain the railroads. They adapted their native foods to the ingredients and cooking methods available to them here. While ground beef is not common in authentic south-of-the-border Mexican cuisine, it IS quite common in Kansas Mexican cooking. They also had to replace traditional Mexican cheeses with the cheeses they found in the Midwest. Attend Topeka's Mexican Fiesta sometime and you'll see lots of Mexican-Americans loving their unique and delicious food. My sister lives on the West Coast, loves Mexican food, travels frequently in Southern California and Mexico, ate at Lopez recently for the first time, and loved it. Our family is grateful to have Lopez in Atchison. We eat there on average about twice a month, maybe more. We always enjoy it. My personal favorites are the pork chile and smothered burritos. My wife will usually order the enchiladas. I imagine that, over the years, we've sampled everything on the menu and never been disappointed. Service is always friendly and attentive. The margaritas are well mixed. You can actually taste some tequila in the drink, unlike a lot of "authentic" Mexican restaurants where the gringos sop up margaritas that taste like limeade. The beer is kept very cold, and soda glasses are never empty. The chips and salsa are never ending if you like. Again, Lopez de Mexico is a fine example of Kansas Mexican cuisine. saw the reviews and expected alot better for service and food. the other Mexican place we usually go to in atchison has been good, but we wanted to explore this lopez place. the tortilla chips they brought out were cold and almost stale which is an indicator right off the bat for a mexican place....an authentic place usually has warm/fresh chips. it took 45 minutes to get our order- which had to be sent back as the fajitas werent fully cooked. i didnt see a single mexican employee....only caucasions....so how authentic can this place be? wont be going back read more

We were in town for a baseball game at Benedictine. The AC was welcomed as we walked in for lunch. Small place that was full. We got a table in less than 5 min. Chips and salsa dropped off quickly. Thick chips and mild salsa with occasional heat. We ordered Nachos and 2 diff burrito entrees. Huge portions. Lots of cheese. Everyone was very happy with their food and took half home in a box.
