I have never actually been to this patisserie. What am I doing here?…read moreI am here telling you about the AMAZING quality of their baked goods *cue mouthwatering* I am spoilt. So when friends come visit, they know what to bring. What to bring = Good baked goods. The cakes, macarons, pies, tarts, EVERYTHING at Patisserie New York is even better than that. I promise. Look at my photos, it should give a hint! Their chocolate mud cake. I know, boring choice in the face of rhubarb crumbles in all sizes, and miniature fruit tarts bursting with the rainbow! But it is the best chocolate mud cake that I have ever eaten! Soft, and moist, and so fresh! I feel like the chocolate god would be proud! My other favourite from their bakery is their red velvet cupcake. People know I hate cupcakes from stores because besides the frosting, they never have much going for them. The red velvet cupcake here feels like you are drowning in soft, velvety goodness. It is tasty, and just sweet enough to compliment the strong frosting! I would keep writing but there is too much to say! So save me the trouble, do yourself a favour, and please, go visit the incredible bakery!

Before you get over excited, these desserts are not from New York. But then again, with cakes like…read morethese, who really cares? This is one of the best cake shops I've ever been to. Located in the Sutherland Shire's suburb of Caringbah, Patisserie New York sells some of the best pastries Sydney has to offer, in particular their cakes. Among my personal favourites; the Belgian White Chocolate Mud, a white chocolate sponge layered with white chocolate ganache and topped with hand shaven chocolate curls - all of course made with fine Belgian chocolate. For the impeccable quality and exquisite taste, the $40 used for this baby is money I like to call well-spent. But if amazing white chocolate mud cake isn't your thing, another favourite - the double baked blueberry cheesecake just might be. And if you're still not satisfied, the patisserie offers a wide variety of cakes and desserts suitable for any occasion including tarts, slices, macarons, cupcakes, muffins, sweet breads and more to suit anyone's sugar fix needs.

Reviewing only the wine part…read more I fly out of the 50s gates often and there's nothing else really to do around there, so I usually end up picking a bottle or two. The assortment of wines is eclectic, particularly the foreign stuff. They have brand names at the usual premium (although I notice the Mouton '45 is at a mere A$46k vs SIN's S$50k, a touch over A$3k more), but also the odd very cheap, interesting bottle. Last trip, I picked up a Madeira that a port loving friend is still raving about. This trip's highlight was Hugel's gewurztraminer which for A$24 was an absolute steal compared to what that gets you in Australian. Who on earth curates this stuff? I always felt like I was playing the lottery with the slower moving stock, which is stored vertically at room temperature. And eventually I did hit the jackpot, or the full chamber since it is more like roulette, and found a cork with mould on both sides, a brittle texture and wine so acidic and off that I couldn't even pretend to drink the otherwise so appetizing Robert Weil spatlese riesling. A$45 down the drain, and obviously no opportunity for a return or indeed any type of way to reach customer service. The sales lady had mentioned that both these bottles had been sitting unsold for years due to lack of demand since "they switched the gates to Asia-bound flights" whose customers "prefer brand names"; and this would explain the cork drying, opening to the outside, and the mould coming through as a result. Guess I'm back to the main duty free shop going forward (A Little Something is Heinemann-owned). Never had a bad bottle from them, perhaps due to fast turnaround? Shame, because I liked this usually empty shop with helpful staff.

I had a lot of time to kill at the Sydney airport. Out of sheer luck, I stumbled upon A Little…read moreSomething - and immediately turned into a giddy little girl. This seemingly new, well-stocked, and cute-as-a-button store carries "a little something" from all over the world. In particular, that means that you'll find sweets from various leading international brands. You want Fortnum & Mason jams? Max Brenner chocolates? Italian wine? Who needs to go to London, New York, or Rome? Apparently, you can get them all in the T1 terminal. (I literally felt like a little kid in a candy store!) The service is another plus: the staff were all really attentive and friendly. They gave me free samples (of chocolate), offered recommendations for what to get my dad, and were generally helpful and accommodating. After browsing for a little while, I settled on purchasing some macarons (from MakMak). Although this is no Laduree or Pierre Herme, the store featured some really interesting flavors: - Bellini (Peach + Prosecco) - Green Tea Latte - Smoked Vanilla & Pecan Praline - Rhubarb & Rose I told the person I wanted a box of 6 and then 2 additional ones - and to my surprise, he told me that it'd actually be cheaper to get the box of 10. I did the math - he was right!, oops - and told him that I actually liked the small box better. To that, he said he'd still give me the small box of 6, then put 4 separates in a bag - and just have me pay the (cheaper) price for a box of 10. Nice, right? As a New Yorker, I'm certainly not used to store people looking out for the customer like that. I eventually ate the 4 separates on the plane (favorite was hands down the green tea - yummmmm!), and found them all to be really yummy! Definitely worth the price. Of course, these goods don't come cheap... Even in their respective countries, these are, after all, delicacies - so getting gifts for others (or even a treat for yourself) may cost a pretty penny, depending on what you want. But based on my experience, the quality of the treats more than makes up for it. And most of their goods are packaged and non-perishable, so they'll withstand long journeys. Bottom Line: If you have time to kill while you're waiting at the Sydney Airport (and especially if you're in need of a gift), wander over to Terminal 1 and get lost in the wonders of A Little Something! :D
