Looking glass is located 20 miles south of downtown Moab off an austere dirt road. Since it isn't in a national or state park, expect to have the place mainly to yourselves. While the surrounding views aren't as good as Canyonlands or Arches, the Looking Glass itself is a pretty cool site.
The main attraction of this colossal rock formation, however, is the rock climbing. More specifically, the 180' free-rappel into the Looking Glass' amphitheater and the giant swing that follows. There is only one route to the top, an easy 5.4 friction climb with three pitches. The route is bolted, so you don't need much gear other than quickdraws and rope. Since the rappel is long, you will need at least two 60m and know how to setup a double rope rappel.
The start of the route is on the backside of the rock formation (opposite where you park). You ascend the spine with some easy climbing. We took some family who have never climbed before and they made it up without any issues. To start the rappel, you have to lower yourself into a keyhole (located below the three bolts anchored at the summit). From there, setup the double-rope rappel off the three chains and have at it.
The exposure on the rappel is awesome, definitely the highlight of the climb. Once on the ground, keep the ropes up and your harnesses on. If you are willing, you now have a giant swing assembled. Tie in and walk up the gravelly hill to the base of the Looking Glass amphitheater. There should be a ledge with graffiti. That's your launching off point, but make sure you take up all the slack. Once you leap, you will pendulum out 100+ feet. Ride it for a few swings before lowering yourself down.
It makes for a pretty thrilling morning. Just remember to be safe and know what you're doing.
