Despite there being many more issues at hand, I will confine my comments to the fittings at which I was present, most importantly the last fitting that was disappointingly 3 days before the wedding.
The late fitting was NOT because of issues with work schedules, but because the dress was not finished until a week before the wedding. This is despite correspondence that the dress would be ready at the latest 4 weeks prior.
The dress had multiple layers coming from the waist. When the dress was put on at the final fitting, there were still pins in. The hem had not been altered despite us paying extra for this particular alteration. Deanne was completely unaware until my daughter got stuck by a pin.
The sleeves were added 1-2 weeks prior to the wedding despite requests for sleeves from the time of the original design meeting. The sleeves were sewn such that they pulled the shoulders of the dress down and off, as the desss was heavy. We were told to stitch the dress to my daughter's bra on the day of the wedding and were offered no further help. Naturally, with a 15kg gown, this did not work and we had to keep leaving the wedding to pull the dress up and back onto the shoulders.
At the fitting when walking, my daughter kept tripping, unable to walk more than a few steps. We were told she couldn't walk on carpet, as this was usual with gowns. Walking on floorboards as she was instructed, my daughter continued to trip. Deanne then began cutting the inner layers with scissors whilst the dress was still on. The cutting went on for over an hour. It was nearly 10pm. I did ask Deanne three separate times during this cutting, to have these hem alterations evened up and sewn . But Deanne said that this could not be done, and refused. People at the wedding noticed the inner layers of the dress poking out, and that my daughter had to lift the dress to walk anywhere, even down very flat the aisle!
Deanne designs, but does not sew. I did not realise this. The person who is her sewer is available only one day a week. Thus when there were issues at the late final fitting there was no possibility of further alterations.
The comment about the unevenness of where the wedding was held is untrue. It is a residential block on flat ground with 3 steps between 2 sections. At the final fitting, we were told not to walk on carpet or grass or my daughter would trip. How many weddings do not involve carpet or grass? From the beginning Deanne knew that the wedding was being held in our garden. There was no question at all about where the wedding was held until there were issues with tripping on the dress.
During the fittings I found Deanne to be a really lovely caring person. But, she was obviously out of her league and whilst helpful, could not and would not try to complete the dress before the wedding. The offer of fixing it AFTER the wedding was pathetic.
Finally, I must point out that Deanne insisted on full payment of over $3500. I mean really, really insisted. Certainly she is a hard business woman. At no point did she apologise for the situation. For us, the lack of apology was upsetting.
I have not written this until 3 months after the wedding so that I could have a reasonable amount of perspective. I have also thought very carefully about the rating that I have given. In contrast, to this very very disappointing experience we have given the celebrant, wedding planner, marquee people, caterers, waiters and drinks staff, florist, wedding car hire company and driver, and gardener excellent reviews.
At this point we are considering VCAT on legal advice.
