I am not - nor will I ever be - a Damsel in Distress. After weeks of news about natural and man-made disasters, I decided to do myself and my homies a favor and get my act together with this stuff. I signed up for the 28 hour course to become a member of the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), which is backed by FEMA. Among many other things, I learned that all three of the fire extinguishers at my home didn't_work_anymore. Their efficacy had not only expired... it was defunct. Yikes. It is about 50% cheaper to have your fire extinguisher recharged at Longhorn Fire and Safety than to buy a new fire extinguisher. And fire extinguishers do need to be recharged or at least maintained every 6 or 7 years. Years ago, fire stations would recharge your extinguishers for free, but that's no longer the case. Matt and Dustin at Longhorn are super informative, accessible and resourceful people. They'll help you figure out what's best for you and where/how you should store your extinguisher(s). FYI... Non-rechargeable fire extinguishers must be replaced with a new unit every 12 to 20 years depending on the manufacturer. Also, those little fire extinguishers that so many of us have won't help much, if at all. Stay safe, y'all. I mean that.

Review Highlights - Longhorn Fire and Safety

After shopping online for a fire extinguisher for my home shop, I was left with more questions than answers.

I own a preschool and have been a customer of Ace Fire for over 5 years. During this time, they…read morehandled the installation of fire equipment, monitoring and annual inspections on our system. I am writing this review because of how they handled my recent service call. I am cancelling my service for monitoring and future service because of this. I called them to repair our faulty fire system. It was saying we had a fire when we did not. I told the person on the phone who took the service call that we had recently put in a light in one of our classrooms and the week afterwards, one of their techs came out to fix an error on the fire panel. They cleared it and seemed to find the problem and fix it. All was good! Then three weeks later, the system said we had a fire again, so a tech was sent again. I told the person on the phone again about the light that had been installed and verified that someone had come three weeks before about the same problem in our back classroom. She verified all of this and said she would pass this information on to the tech. When the tech arrived, he started his search for the problem in the opposite end of the school. He crawled up our attic and checked the panel and checked all of the smoke detectors...and when I arrived for the day, I asked him if he had already checked the back room and that attic. He was not told about them. So the first 3.5 hours were spent working on areas of the school that didn't need it. He was constantly on the phone with another tech. He was having problems figuring out the issue. He was young and seemed inexperienced. They finally sent out the tech on the phone in the late afternoon and at 4:30PM (8 hours in now), they discovered a wire that had been crimped or damaged in the attic near the light that had been installed. Then he handed me the bill. Eight full hours of service for something that was exactly where I told him it would be. At $120/hr. They never should have sent an inexperienced tech who couldn't handle the job on his own. They also should have told him where to start. I called and asked them to change the hours on the job to half of the time since he didn't start where I told them to, but they refused and emailed me a bill for almost $1,000.00! I would be happy to remove this review if they do the right thing and reduce this bill. I have no problem paying for 4 hours even though the problem couldn't be found by the first tech for 7 hours. Whoever is handling their service and billing department should not be. There are plenty of fire monitoring and fire alarm service companies in the Austin area. Don't use this one!

I looked Ace Fire up to recharge a small fire extinguisher kept on my tractor. Extinguisher was…read moreabout a month old, but I had to use it for a small grass fire. I chose them because they were the closest to me. The lady on the phone suggested I just throw it away and go buy a new one. Given its not your typical plastic-valved HW store cheap unit, but one designed for use in rugged or weather, I wanted to recharge it instead of throwing it away. That's just a waste of a good tank and valve assembly. The lady quote me $25 and a 24-48 hour turn around for their on-call tech to do it. I dropped it off, filling out their little paper, and she reaffirmed the price and turn around. I didn't get any type of acceptance paperwork. Over a week later, I still hadn't heard back, so I called, and was told it still wasn't ready due to something about the tech and his license or something I didn't follow. Then I got a call early next morning saying it was ready. When I picked it up at lunch, the bill was $41 and change, and not the original $25 dollar quote. No real reason given for the price increase. Its still cheaper than ordering a new unit, but not by much. Next time I need to recharge any extinguishers I will look at some of the other shops.
