I rarely leave negative reviews, but our experience with this physician, Hakeem Asaad was extremely disappointing.
My sister, who is also a nurse, was referred for evaluation after nearly three months of significant symptoms, including numbness and tingling, burning/electric-shock pain, weakness, tremors, dropping objects, leg heaviness, falls, severe fatigue, cognitive changes, urinary frequency, and recurrent blurry vision with pain behind her eyes. These symptoms have significantly impacted her daily life.
As a healthcare professional herself, she understands that symptoms can have many possible causes and that a physician may ultimately rule out the diagnosis a patient is concerned about. She went in seeking answers and a thorough evaluation, not demanding a specific diagnosis.
Instead, she left in tears.
She was told she does not have MS because it would have shown on her MRI. When she became emotional, she was asked, "Why are you crying?" and her depression was questioned, despite her explaining the emotional toll of months of unexplained symptoms.
What was most upsetting was the dismissive tone. Rather than feeling heard or given a clear explanation of possible causes, she left feeling she had to defend the reality of her symptoms.
He did refer her to rheumatology, prescribed gabapentin, and offered further testing, including another MRI with contrast and possibly a lumbar puncture. We appreciate the additional workup, but good care is also about listening, communication, and compassion.
A patient can be wrong about their suspected diagnosis and still deserve to be taken seriously.
My sister didn't need a diagnosis confirmed in that moment, she needed a thoughtful evaluation and respectful communication about what else could be causing her symptoms.
Being a nurse, she spends her career caring for patients with compassion and dignity. She deserved that same compassion and dignity when she became the patient.
No patient should leave a neurological appointment crying and feeling humiliated.
Based on our experience, I would not recommend this physician for those seeking a compassionate, patient-centered neurological evaluation. read more
