As far as I could tell Anidote is the only 100% vegan cafe/restaurant in all of the…read moreChristchurch/New Brighton area, which immediately put it at the top of my must-visit radar! Upon walking in it was a bit unclear what the food options were and how to order. It turns out the big computer screen on the check-out counter is intended to order from (after you register or sign in, or something) but I didn't see anyone use it (I only came to know that's what it was for after a lengthy conversation with the owner--I had asked about it because it seemed quite out of place in an otherwise warm, cozy, and family home-like environment). Head chef Annie and her husband Levente were just sweet as ever and clearly working very hard to make Antidote a standout vegan establishment in the New Brighton-Christchurch region. The cafe is more of an order-as-you go/made-to-order type of thing. Which is cool and Annie's talent for making fully raw foods is just lovely. The freshly pressed juices looked particularly yummy. They also offer weekly yoga classes in the back room, there is soon to be a co-working space upstairs, I believe (although I couldn't get the wifi to work the few times I stopped in--they do advertise free wifi on the window), and possibly other events, so do check their calendar. I could see this place doing well in downtown Christchurch (with a bit more foot traffic) and a nice interior facelift to give it some vibrancy and oomph. My only concern is that a different location would take away from the amazing locals that seem to come in almost everyday--everything from "pirate" ukulele teachers and puppet masters, to yogis, young tourists, long-time townies, and everything in between. All in all, the food was nice and I very much enjoyed the company and energy that Annie and Levente exuded while preparing and serving the food.

An upscale, luxurious restaurant celebrating some Asian fusion ingredients and flavors. It's…read moreprobably a special occasions type of restaurant, though we viewed it more as a welcome meal on our first day off the plane in NZ. If you're having trouble determining what to get, their "Trust the King" tasting menu is a perfect choice. The "Royal" for 100 NZD nets you their best hits plus a dessert as a bonus. With the amount of courses you are given, this ended up being such an incredible value versus ordering all separately. After a final tally, it honestly felt like a highway robbery! Here's what our table received along with expected NZD: Small plate samplers (2): Natural oyster w/ nashi pear, Smoked salmon w/ spinach leaf, galangal, chili jam, and salmon roe Small Shared Plates (2): Wild Venison Carpaccio topped w/ nahm dtok, EVOO, and spicy sesame (32 NZD); Moong dal in mixed seed salad, avocado, and fresh lime (22 NZD) Larger Shared Plates (2): Marinated yellow fin tuna w/ chilli and mandarin, coconut salad (38 NZD); Crispy Pressed Half Duck in caramelized mandarin sauce (62 NZD) Dessert: Lemongrass panna cotta, lime granita, mint (18 NZD) It was a harmonic interplay between different Asian flavors, more Thai heavy than others, and even the local ingredients such as the raw venison entering the foray. They did ask if there was anything we didn't like before serving the meal to which I never thought to mention my aversion to overly spicy food (I was thinking of exotic foods I dislike). And, lo and behold, a lot of options were definitely on the spicier end such as the spicy sesame/ nahm dtok sauce which topped the carpaccio and abundance of red chili shavings in the marinated yellow fin tuna. On the bright side, it did require me slow down which enabled me to truly relish my food. Most everything was delicious even the duck with joyfully crispy skins and dipped in a sweet honey glace (though ever so slightly on dry side in the middle). King of Snake also houses the Monarch Cocktail Bar, to which I ordered a 'Paper Crane' (King of Snake Gin, apple soju, elderflower liquer, sake; 23 NZD) to pair with my meal. A buzzy, floral, and effervescent drink to really lend to the comforting meal.

We shared delicious plates and wine. would recommend the prawn dumplings, blue cod, tenderloin steak bites and curry pumpkin. We thought the curry pumpkin was the best!

Beautiful, modern and spacious Burmese restaurant in Christchurch. The server was very friendly,…read moreaccommodating and actually from Burma/Myanmar. Food was very tasty with authentic flavors, but can be adjusted for Western palates (primarily by dialing down the heat). If you have spicy food lovers, be sure to ask for the chilies on the side...they pack a lot of heat! We enjoyed the Le Pet Thoke salad, Seit Da Kin (lamb skewers) and Jetda Ono Hin curry. Everything was delicious and goes well with their selection of beers. Only thing that I would change is perhaps having a little more tea leaves in the Le Pet Thoke. Overall a lovely dinner and nice change of pace from the other Asian (mostly Japanese, Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese) restaurants in town.

It's merged with The Bodhi Tree so don't confuse the two; it's now under one roof. Mama Hooch is located right next door to them. We dropped in for an early Monday dinner (around 5:45pm). The inside is gorgeous with two floors and a very clean, modern look. Interesting that most of the clientele was Caucasian. The menu is short and sweet; nibbly bits, soups, vegetable/salad, meat, seafood and desserts. The drink menu is standard but at least the bottles are reasonable. - Lepet thoke ($14.50 NZD) - tea leaf salad is a Burmese speciality. Pickled tea leaves mixed with lentils, nuts, sesame seeds and chili. Barely any heat nor much tea leaf flavour but still a tasty dish. Also, way too pricey for such a small appetizer. - 2x steamed rice ($3.00 NZD/person) - we weren't sure but turns out you can get free refills on rice. Sweet because it's steep enough for plain white rice. - Nga kin ($17.50 NZD) - a boneless fillet of fresh fish (grouper) baked in the oven. When this dish got dropped off, we did a double take. Smallest piece of fish I've seen on a plate. Fish was nicely cooked but plain. Luckily, the side sauce was BOMB; could have drank that on its own. It was sweet, spicy and tangy (a mix of soy sauce, fish sauce, vinegar, cilantro, chives and hot pepper). - Seit da nut ($16.50 NZD) - lamb curry cooked with lemongrass, ginger and curry leaves. You get three pieces; again, small portion but the lamb was tender and delicious. Wish that you'd get some vegetables with this dish. Good flavours but know coming in that portions are small. 3.5 stars.
