So, I'll preface with I know mexican food. I've eaten thousands of meals in hundreds of authentic mexican eateries, and lived in both San Diego and Mexico for something like 15 years out of the last 40. I've been a part owner of one restaurant and a cook in a couple. The decor was very pleasant and the flavor was fine, good but nothing to rave over. The quantity of carnitas in my burrito was miniscule. To compare, I just ate a $6 burrito at a Marianas Market and I kid you not, it had to be 5 - 6 times as much pork and just as high quality. Again the decor is very nice, real paintings of I have to guess the owner, good color scheme and 'pleasant' hosting. But I don't eat these things. I'm on the road, get told a recommendation for a real hidden "gem", I end up spending $8 and change for a burrito that was more tortilla and lettuce than any thing else, and it's not like it was an enormous amount of lettuce either. I had asked for grilled onions to substitute for beans, and really couldn't tell if there were any in the burrito. I mentioned this afterwards to Alberto the owner's son who was hosting and he gave me this, "well I understand that's you're opinion" autopilot response. A response and attitude (dismissal), which people of my age (57 years) really don't appreciate, as I know when I'm being shined on. I had mentioned this to Alberto in part, because of the invisibility of the onions and also because he had charged me over $8 for a $6 and change item, thinking he was adding cost for the substitution. He then informed me that no, the price difference was because he had charged me 85 cents for an empty styrofoam cup for my water, without informing me prior to doing so. I mentioned that this seemed like strange behavior and he said I should have asked him about the cups pricing structure, Like its normal to charge for a cup for water outside of a Am/Pm Arco station or maybe a movie theater. So now I've paid $8+ for little more quantity of food than a $1 breakfast burrito at Taco Bell and a styro cup. I'm still starving and getting rationalizations worthy of a, 'get paid for just showing up and wanting to be praised for just showing up' Millennial attitude. I don't like getting ripped off in the first place (don't know anyone who does), and getting a "we're so wonderful, I don't believe you the customer don't understand how wonderful we are," response. I figured, he's young and good looking so he probably is used to getting away with this kind of approach and would have chalked it up to just that, until I called a couple of days later to give my feedback to the owner over the phone. I spoke with the owner, Alberto's mom, and got pretty much got the same vibe from her as I did from the son. So I guess I was wrong to attribute my experience with Alberto to his age or inexperience. Summing up: I love to find Hidden Gems, not just so I can enjoy them myself, I really enjoy, being able to share them with others, it's a part of what I think it is being a good neighbor. So, in the case of Lola's Kitchen, I felt ripped off on three accounts, 1) the food 2) the H2O cup 3) that I can't possibly pass on the 'Hidden Gem', recommendation that sent me to Lola's Kitchen in the first place. Closing tips: If you are in San Diego please go try JV's Taco Shop on Morena Blvd, one of my all time favorites. And if you're in Las Vegas, check out Roberto's Taco Shop on Sunset and Pecos, they are no JVs, but for the $6 price it's a much, much better deal than Lola's Kitcken (imho). This place is hard to find, because it is not much from the outside. The service is very fast despite being busy. I got the taquitos which were good. My husband got the California burrito and he said it was good, except it had too many fries. My daughter loved her cheeseburger. Funny, since it is primarily Mexican food. Overall very good food. Im giving it 4.5 rounded off. Owners son was very nice and professional. Food came QUICK. Here is why a traveler needs to try this place out. Barstow was, and sort of is, a hole in the ground little town located between Victorville and Las Vegas were years ago, nothing other than a dirty famous McDonalds "Train Station exist. Today many fast food restaurants are there for a quick in and out stop. This place is small, hard to find but much better than eating something wrapped in paper. If your pit stop is in Barstow and you need a bite to eat go here! It's a small hole in the wall and it doesn't look like much but the food is sooo good. I ordered the California burrito and I'm not sure how but the fries inside was still crunchy! My husband ordered the pork chili verde and he said it was delicious. Super find! If you love to eat local or just want to try something non-chain - which we do! - we highly recommend this tiny, but super yummy place! The strip mall it is located in appears a bit dodgy, and you can't tell from the exterior that Lola's will be any better, but we went in anyway and wow!! We loved the bright interior and fun vibe! This is probably my favorite Mexican food spot. All the food tastes like I went to someone's grandmas house and had authentic homemade meal. I crave for it all the time now that I've discovered this place! I come to Barstow on business sometimes, and I've tried Jenny's, casa Jimenez, Los Domingos and I swear none of those compares to this spot if you're craving Mexican food. I can't tell you how many times I've driven out to Vegas, stopped in Lynwood and ate at one of the many predictable fast grab restaurants. Not today! I hit Yelp for some Mexican breakfast to baptize a fun filled Vegas run. We found Lola's and are so happy we did. The 4- and 5-stars are true. Small, friendly, and clean - it's the great taste of the food that puts the 5th star on this one for me. Had carne asada sope for lunch and a pork green chili burrito "to go" for dinner - the best I've had anywhere. Not "cheesy" or greasy, main flavors come from the carefully cooked and seasoned meats and not the salsa ('tho that is good, as well!) Lola's will be a regular stop for me - it's a winner. And thanks to the previous reviewer who pointed out that it shares parking lot with Von's market - otherwise, I would most likely have missed finding this little gem of a place. read more

I got the Californian Burrito which was a very Americanized burrito as it had French Fries inside the burrito... for some reason I thought it was going to be a side dish. The food here isn't bad - very simple but satisfying. My low rating is for complete lack of awareness about food allergies. I have celiac disease (a strong gluten allergy) and would get very sick from consuming gluten, particularly in sizable quantities. I asked for corn tortillas but was given flour tortillas instead. They look similar enough that I almost ate one but decided to ask, just in case. Yes, they are flour, was the response. I asked for corn and am allergic, I said. No apology, no nothing. Food allergies are real and can be very serious. Restaurants should train their staff to know that. If you mess up an order, at least apologize. Some of us don't simply prefer corn to flour. I would have been sick for 2 weeks if I ate that tortilla. read more

Probably the best chile verde I've ever had: perfect balance of sweet, sour, spicy. Excellent salsa, chips were just ok. Friend had a carnitas torta, also really, really good. Stopped here on the drive from LA to Vegas, after reading the Yelp reviews. This was a solid meal -- big portions, friendly staff, good sides. I got a carne asada burrito -- a pretty hearty brick of tortilla with beef, guacamole, cheese. Comes with rice and beans on the side, which were okay. My wife got the #2 enchilada verde. Tasty sauce. Overall, a good meal for the area, but wouldn't hold up to LA or LV. read more
