Lola's Kitchen is the gem located within the desolate depths of the desert. I ran across Lola's for the first time a couple years ago while passing through Barstow for an otherwise uneventful visit. The storefront was deceiving, looking like any random store in that little strip mall. But upon walking in, the colorful decor brightened up my day. The Carne Asada Tacos I've had were surprisingly delicious, the best I've had in the High Desert. Most recently, I tried their Shredded Beef taco which was just as good, and shared a Carne Asada Fries plate. They put the guacamole and sour cream on the corners, and their crinkle cut fries were surprisingly good and crispy. The tortilla chips and hot sauce they serve while you wait are probably my favorite thing to eat while there. Along with the tasty food, the prices are reasonable and the staff are friendly. Whenever you need a pitstop on the long drive between SoCal and Vegas, Lola's Kitchen is a delightful dining destination. read more

While driving back home to Cali recently, my folks & I were passing Barstow & they remarked that they were hungry. So, as always, I pulled out my phone & went straight to Yelp to show us the way. And...Lola's was the best Yelp could come up with. This place truly is the epitome of a hole in the wall. It is pretty small & not laid out very well, IMO. It is pretty small inside. Fortunately, when we got there, it wasn't very packed. But, no sooner had we sat down, people started coming in & it was instantly packed. It was literally, standing room only. This is where the poor lay out comes into play. If you happen to be dining in; you are seated first & then you have to get up & place your order at the counter. So, if there is already an influx of people that are just coming in for pick up or takeout orders, you're stuck waiting on line to place your order. Lame! Also, if you happen to be sitting at the tables up against the wall as you enter, and there happens to be a line, good luck getting back to your seat. I had some green chicken enchiladas. They were ok, but extremely spicy for my taste. Kind of surprising, considering most Mexican places kind of dumb down the spiciness, even more so, considering the majority of non-Hispanic clientele. My folks both had boring burritos, which were actually pretty big & they seemed to like them. They also have cucumber water here too. Definitely a highlight for me ;) Would I stop here again? Ummm...perhaps not. I'd probably just go over to Del Taco. However, it wasn't too bad & the prices are pretty reasonable. I just wouldn't go out of my way to stop here. read more

I think it would look really great on a coffee mug. Ketchup is my personal preference and it makes a nice creamy sauce (or coffee). The waitress Gabriel looks so much like a little girl. Wow! We were driving from Palm Springs to Death Valley and stopped here for breakfast. It was amazing from start to finish. The place is cute, clean, and all around wonderful. You can get breakfast and lunch at anytime. I had the chorizo breakfast scramble and the best ground beef taco. Ken had a breakfast burrito and liked that it was full of eggs, chorizo, and potatoes (and none of the filler as he calls it like beans and rice). I loved the little touches like a plant at each table, salsa and chips, and infused water. The staff was so personable and welcoming. Even Lola herself was there. Great stop for travelers on the 40 or the 15. It's in an almost abandoned retail center right off the freeway so it's easy to get to and there's plenty of parking for trailers, big rigs, etc. The staff is super friendly.
