This institution has been here as long as I can remember…read moreand our family has been coming to Boothbay on and off for near 60 years. walking through is a bit like walking down memory lane starting with walking with my parents to walking with our kids and now just us.It is not that the store is so great or the prices but, like Boothbay it is a constant in a world of change. Prices have gone up as with the times, but there are some great chotkes to be had. It is always great to walk to the back of the store to look out the window at the pier and its goings on while thinking whether the grand kids would like the plush lobster or the puffin better. I began knitting two years ago and love alpaca yarn, and the thought of being able to meet the alpaca that I am knitting from just seemed so cute. Mike was super friendly and very informative. There were 8 total people in our group (our 5 plus a family of 3) and he was engaging with everyone. Our 5 year old grandson started out a bit unsure but Mike was very encouraging and our grandson was able to really open up. What a great experience for kids. The shop is filled with yarn from the alpacas, and they make sure that you have the name of the alpaca as well in case you need more at a later date. I mentioned we would be back later in the year and would love to take the rug making class and they let us know we can schedule that through them for a date that works for us, so if you don't see an experience listed for your dates, call them or send them an email because they will work with you!

Their site (www.swansislandblankets.com) is a good indicator of the extraordinary quality and attention to detail in everything they do. I ordered a scarf, at $160, and it's as soft as cashmere thanks to the fact that Swans Island uses only organic soap to wash their wool. The scarf arrived in a gorgeous box with a catalog that looks more like a fine arts exhibit program. The blankets are expensive, about $600 to $1000 as far as I can tell, but they conform to every facet of the idea of an heirloom: something of high quality that you treasure and eventually pass down. It's wonderful to see world-class working being done in Maine.

What caught my eye was the more "dressy" items that you normally don't see in a resort town shop mixed in with the more casual and "beach" clothing. This shop holds an amazing collection of clothes, accessories and gift items. The staff could not be more friendly or less intrusive! They are extremely welcoming and helpful.

Still an aesthetically pleasing place to browse, and they have a select quantity of beautiful clothing, shoes, and accessories. So many lovely, quality items! This year I bought two ample-sized shawl/wrap/scarves (Daisy big wrap) for when it eventually gets cold (it was in the 80s the day I bought them, but I know winter is a-comin'). They are incredibly soft, and come in the most gorgeous colors (I bought one in a deep plum color, and another in a rich teal. I hate winter, but I will be prepared to keep warm in style. The wraps were just $24, and I already know I'll be getting many compliments when I wear these. I also bought a light, airy poncho that can be worn several ways. I bought one here last year--in indigo--and I wear it over solid-colored basics. I never fail to get compliments on it (and it adds just the right amount of light warmth and coverage, as well as a pop of color--sorry, I normally stay away from using overplayed terms like that, but it fits). It's the Van Klee poncho, just $22, and I got one in fuschia. I fell in lust with some of their fabulous jewelry but had to get back to my laundry. I think I'll be back before heading home on the weekend. As noted in my previous review, the ladies working in the shop were friendly and helpful, but not right on top of me as I shopped (thank you, thank you). This is my favorite shop in York.

I reached out to customer service and got an immediate response from Michelle Comeau stating I could send the bag back postage paid and they would replace it. The same day she emailed me a FedEx label and within two days of sending it back I had a new one arriving. It is perfect. Quality product and excellent customer service!
