This historic hotel was unique with modern amenities. We were assigned one of the original (aka older) casitas at the front of the property. The room was cozy with a neat functioning fireplace, which we did not use throughout our triple digit stay. Good AC and a ceiling fan were saviors though! There were ants in our bathroom and what was up with the sink that was at upper chest level? Our VIP Orbitz perk was a coupon for free chips and salsa and one drink up to $15, which depending on how you look at it could be marketing genius or a money grab, or both. If there's two of us, then we're probably going to order at least one more drink, and the fine print also made sure to say that gratuity was not included. The drinks were meh and I would be disappointed if I paid the $9 menu price for chips and salsa. Complimentary coffee in their cute reading room in the morning. Really nice pool and spa area. They also have a gym which I didn't check out at all. The microwave upon request and availability at no extra charge was welcome! Front desk service is snail paced slow. There's only one person handling the guests in front of her as well as answering phones. They sure take their time with each guest, which is nice if you're the guest they're assisting, not so much if you're the one(s) waiting.

Under the vines that make this area so relaxing

This is a hidden jewel of Tucson. When my husband told me we were staying off of Alvernon in Tucson I was skeptical. Wow was i wrong! We grew up in Tucson Az. Went past this place many times but never knew what was behind the walls of this magical place. Pulled in aperance was like going into a small village in Mexico. Absolutely Beautiful! Checked in our room was on the second floor..oh my gosh the room was a old Spanish trail dream. Large room with a Spanish style fire place, balcony, king size bed, shower, jacuzzi and a private tolet. All decorated in a western southwest felt..warm and very inviting. Took a tour of the 5 acere property. Very lush green grass in the center court yard. A pool.with two water falls lounge chairs a fireplace and hot tub. The pool was heated for a chilli day. We visited the library with a fireplace and plenty of books and games to pass the time. Went on to the restaurant and bar. The food was excellent the bartender was friendly and very informative and treated us like family. I highly recommend this jewel for anyone wanting a quiet get away a wedding or anniversary. Maybe even a break from the world. What ever the case its so welcomed. We will be back. Thank you !

What a stunning and beautiful property in this desert oasis! We checked in late on New Year's Eve and they had a beautiful room for us! The on site restaurant was even serving dinner until 8pm! Our bedroom was nice and cozy with a beautiful view of foliage, just enough for privacy from walkway traffic! The shower amenities were incredible, so much that I'd be interested in purchasing them. The robes were extra soft and I even slept in mine! The staff was all very friendly and they are dog friendly and have a huge dog run area! We would definitely stay here again if we pass through this area. The only reason I deducted a star was because there were no USB charging outlets and we couldn't charge our phones or watches. Next time, we'll bring other cables.

I came back for a second visit and upgraded from a casita to a deluxe room. Big mistake. The casitas are lovely and although they are a bit dated, they are cute and comfortable. The deluxe room that I was given overlooked the parking lot and smelled like smoke. It also lacked the charm of the casita. Still, though, I do love this place.

Cielo's patio dining had such ambiance.

I had the pleasure of a lovely 4 night stay here last week. This is such a sweet low key Tucson gem boutique hotel. I highly recommend upgrading to the deluxe spa room to elevate your stay. The onsite restaurant Cielo's is equally divine. My room #120 was comfortable and I can't remember the last time I slept so soundly.

Stayed 4 nights this trip... It's certainly helpful that I have a friend that lives in Tucson. Great locale again. This is located in the midtown area of town and pretty close to the U of A campus. My room had a king sized bed of course. Decent amount of storage, but no in room safe or microwave. A small little patio out back with 2 chairs so I could have my morning coffee. Downstairs has a restaurant called Cielos . That's open for breakfast/lunch & dinner. But they do close briefly between meals. Really dined in once for breakfast that has your standard hot/cold items. One can sit outside on their patio and have drinks by fireplace. When I made my reservation a few months back, actually added a fireplace for my room. Nice size pool and hot tub off of the front lobby area. Only downside of this hotel, at night the walkways should have better lighting. Yes I would stay at this one again.

Room entrance with outdoor, private seating.

Such a cute hotel. Southwestern themed but not cheesy. Hotel staff were courteous and friendly. The hotel is clean. Convenient location and had no trouble getting around the Tuscan area.

I'm a big fan of this classic Tucson hotel. The hotel offers "deluxe" more modern rooms, but I love the casitas. The casitas are large rooms that feel more like apartments, with Saltillo tile, wood beam ceilings, a fireplace and many other cute Southwestern touches. My last room had a hammered copper sink that was gorgeous. The grounds of the hotel are nicely maintained with benches, cacti and small metal sculptures - nice ambience. Large walls surround the hotel, but right outside is a very busy street which can be noisy so ask for a room away from it. Lodge on the Desert offers a free breakfast with your stay so take advantage. It's fairly decent. They also seem to have a fair amount of specials going on throughout the year. I've stayed twice now when the room comes with free chips and salsa, margaritas, and paletas. (Mexican fruit popsicles) I believe they offer AAA rates as well, but you might have to call for those. I find myself choosing this hotel over the others when I return to Tucson.

super friendly staff! love the feeling of old style mexican casitas. feels so private yet home-y. we were able to check in early and sat by the HEATED pool with drinks from the hotel bar

    Bed bug bite

We woke up at three in the morning itchy. When we turn on the lights to take a look we had bites all over our bodies. We start looking on the beds and we found bedbugs. We did inform the front office. They moved us to another room, but we were still paranoid and didn't sleep all night. They did tell us that they were gonna give us both nights for free and end up charging us for one night. I've been trying to reach the manager for two weeks and he's been avoiding me Every time I call they tell me that he's busy. Very bad service

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Lodge on the Desert. Extremely friendly staff at the front desk, including Katelyn who enthusiastically shared the history of the hotel including showing us a binder of historical brochures and pictures. She told us that John Wayne used to stay there! The room was clean and large. No view, but it did have sliders so we could sit outdoors. One of the lights in the bathroom was out and when we told the front desk the facilities person came to fix it within minutes! There was some confusion about breakfast - apparently they used to have breakfast included for all who stay there, but now it is only for people who reserved before January 1st. So just be aware of that. We had dinner down the street at Locale Italian which was great, and they serve breakfast as well so if you dont have breakfast included at the Lodge you can go there. I would definitely stay there again, and next time stay longer so I could enjoy the beautiful pool area!

    Heated pool... it's really nice

OVERALL The Lodge on the Desert is a 3-star hotel in the heart of Tucson. It's not my favorite place to lay my head in this desert city, however, my daughters and I did have a good experience overall here on November 20, 2021. ENVIRONMENT The hacienda charm at Lodge on the Desert is what originally lured me in. That and it was a place I had never before stayed there. In late October I reserved a room online because I couldn't get through on the phone to ask a few questions. For a deluxe double queen with a 10% AAA membership discount, I was charged $214.77 for one night. The rates were highest that weekend than any other I guess because it was just before Thanksgiving. SERVICE The receptionists were very friendly and welcoming. MY FAVORITE PART... The heated pool! What a nice nighttime retreat after an 8-hour drive. NOT SO FAVORITE PART... We were in room #227 and I could hear our next door neighbors fairly easily through the walls. I kicked on the air and that helped to drown them out. So glad I didn't have to use my silicone ear plugs. THE AMENITIES + Dog are welcome, but there is a non-refundable $50 fee per dog per night + Complimentary breakfast at Cielo's + Casita rooms and modern Deluxe rooms + Heated pool and whirlpool spa + Gift shop + Same-day laundry service Monday through Saturday + Free onsite parking + Free wireless Wi-Fi access PARKING Parking is plentiful and free. They'll ask which vehicle you drive and that's it. There are many transients and homeless folks roaming the area. The Lodge is surrounded by tall walls which might give you a greater sense of security. TIPS +Definitely check out Cielo's for drinks or dinner if you do not peruse the complimentary breakfast voucher. Request drinks for the pool & spa! + Your credit card will be charged a temporary $100 deposit fee. | Rooms: 4 | Service: 5 | Environment: 4 | Price: 4 |

Lodge on the Desert is a classic Tucson hacienda with beautiful meandering cactus gardens, a lush pool that Is well shaded for a perfect summer swim out of the heat. The rooms are very large and historically decorated, though the baths are tiny, as was the style many years ago. Ask for a quiet room away from Alvernon road as the doors are a bit drafty and you may have road noise. We were in the back and it was very quiet, though the neighbor's smoking (which is not allowed) drifted into our room. He stoped when we confronted him and also told the front deck. A hot, plated breakfast is included. It is not a buffet, but a choice of two selections and comes with fruit and muffins. The cafe has a lot of different seating options from fully outside, to covered patio, bar, and indoor restaurant. We booked the Summer special package rate which included two fruit paletas which had juicy chunks of fruit, and two margaritas with chips and salsa. The salsa was homemade and the chips tasted freshly fried and were seasoned with a chili mix. We asked for skinny margaritas and they were very flavorful, not watered down to make them 'skinny.' We added a side of guacamole which was very good and also interesting as it had corn mixed in and was served in an avocado shell. Unlike some previous reviews, we thought the guacamole was of ample size.

Lodge On The Desert Reviews in Other Languages

Ask the Community - Lodge On The Desert

There are two listings for Lodge on the Desert. One has three reviews and it averages only 2 stars. The other has over 200 reviews and they average 3.5 stars. Are there two locations or some other reason for 2 listings for a motel with the same name?

I can't imagine this place getting 2 star reviews. It was one of the finest places my wife and I have ever stayed at! Possibly one disgruntled customer left several poor reviews?

I love that it is a single-story motel, meaning you don't have to listen to the neighbors walking above you all night. Also, they have gone out of their way to make things kitschy, artsy, and cool. There is art everywhere, including fun little treats like chalk and chalkboards in the room. The rooms are functional but not fancy. There isn't carpet (a benefit in my opinion), the shower is small, but has excellent pressure. I will say the beds are incredibly comfortable. Everything was clean. We had a small (retro-style of course) fridge in the room. And even though there was just a window unit, our room maintained a comfortable temperature. (Although it wasn't that hot. I am not sure how it would be in the summer.) I do love that they only have keypads, no actual keys, which made it really convenient to go in and out. There is also a little bistro set by the front door, which is delightful for sipping coffee (or eating your free oatmeal) in the morning. The common areas are fun, decorated with a lot of cool art and old school kitsch. The pool is heated saltwater, which is good for the cooler months, but kind of a bummer in the hotter months (aka most of the year) because it was only April but the pool felt like bathwater. You can't bring your own drinks to the pool area, but they have a lot of drinks for sale in the lobby (beer, wine, cider, no hard liquor), and the prices are quite reasonable. And the oatmeal bar in the morning is tons of fun. Service is slightly hit or miss. Some of the employees were amazing (shout out to Alex!), but some kind of felt like they were going through the motions. All in all, this is a good value motel, and I would stay there again.

The bar has very limited hours in the summer, but does have a nice drink menu and makes a good spot to hang out. The room was a bit sparse in my opinion. I was under the impression from the website that there would be a nook with a chair for reading, but my room didn't have one. It just had the bed, a couple of nightstands, a dresser, a mini-fridge, and a narrow desk. There's no closet, just a couple of hooks on the wall. The bathroom was basic, with a prefab shower unit. The decor is limited to a couple of vintage lamps and some patterned fabric for the curtains. The bed was comfortable enough and the air conditioner was wonderful at keeping it cool. There's a window next to the door with a top block that isn't covered by a shade, so anyone could stand on a stool from outside and look in the room. I went looking for ice at about 3pm one afternoon. I knew the bar was closed that day, but the entire front office area was locked and no one was around. We try to eat very healthy, and sometimes taking a chance at the local restaurants are going to be able to deliver is just not an option for us. we like the fact that this hotel is somewhat back away from the main road, and in the middle of office complexes, it made it much quieter than some of the others that we drove by. The bed was fairly comfortable, although the pillows were a bit lumpy . Everything was in working order although the TV is somewhat small for the size of the room. Netflix did work great for us. Breakfast was very good and we appreciated the hot egg options, not just scrambled eggs, but also breakfast sandwiches and frittatas. There was also at least one piece of fresh fruit that we could have each day as well. The coffee in the room is pretty weak, so we ended up grabbing coffee from the lobby as it was a bit bolder and better tasting. Definitely would recommend this place, especially if you're looking for something that is longer-term

There are a lot of elevators for folks with mobility issues. The lobby has cold water (sometimes fruit infused). There are many restaurants to choose from, although we didn't try any. There's also a Starbucks on site. There are many pools: a lazy river, a regular pool, a lap pool and hot tubs. We got a room with a balcony overlooking the lazy river and it wasn't too noisy at all. It was so pleasant to sit with the balcony door open to catch the nice breezes. I also enjoyed breakfast on the balcony each morning, including the coffee from the room which was very nice. The room had a fridge so we had many snacks, drinks and other groceries. The cleaners came every day, and made sure everything was tidy and we were stocked with towels and new coffee cups. The gym was great, and not too crowded. I felt like I got a really good workout. There's golf at this resort, in addition to guided hikes, guided meditation sessions, a shuttle to the Mercado District, and more. Very nice place to stay!
