It doesn't look that inviting from the outside but on the inside expect spacious rooms, tiled floors, quality furniture including comfortable beds, leather sofas and flat screen tellys. You can cook in the kitchen of the cafe (you have to go outside to get to it but it's not a big hassle) so it's well fitted out with good cooking equipment. The cafe does breakfast so you can get them to cook for you, although it doesn't do evening meals so you have to fend for yourself for dinner or drive further afield to find a restaurant. I came here in December and it was amazing to have somewhere this nice to come back to after endless boggy walks through blizzards. The countryside is beautiful in this area but if you don't like walking there's castles and picturesque towns to wander round plus Loch Ness.

City Hostel in Inverness is a very unique establishment. From the outside it looks very shady and is incredibly difficult to locate. Not a promising start. It is a little hole in the wall nook dead center of downtown Inverness. Upon entering we were greeted by a wafting scent of illicit drugs but the scent seemed to die off by the time we rounded the staircase upwards. As all Scotland hostels seem to have, we pushed our way through countless doors until finally we reached reception. The reception desk was incredibly kind and helpful. They were young and full of energy. I think it may be a volunteer job in exchange for lodging but I may be wrong. The room was packed with bunk beds just as one would expect. That being said, it was clean and tidy. The entire hostel was very well maintained. The people in our room were from all over. Sadly, many were loud late into the night. The common room is big and welcoming. It offers plenty of window seating and charging ports. There are pool tables and board games for the guests. The kitchen was poorly organized but well stocked and decently clean as far as hostels go. Overall I would say that this was a very pleasant experience. The inside of the hostel is much nicer than one would expect from the outside. The staff was kind, the kitchen stocked, and the rooms clean. Showers are available in abundance. It is in walking distance to everything in downtown Inverness. Definitely recommend to anyone passing through that doesn't mind a bit of craziness! Sometimes it can be fun!

It was inevitable, I had to do it, the draw inexorable and pure…read more So, after a couple "scotch fudges" (fudge with a scotch whiskey inside) to warm my guts, I suited up in my 4/3 wetsuit, climbed down from the ruins and paddled across Loch Ness. I don't know anyone who's done this and it was across one of the thinnest links to the other side, but I did it. I paddled my surfboard across Loch Ness. Was I scared of "Nessie", the prehistoric monster that supposedly lurks beneath these cold, dark waters? Naw, I even splashed around a bit to see if I got her attention. Nothing. As I figured. My bf thought I was crazy for doing it but I thought he was the crazy one for not. (We're no longer together) I peeled out of my suit, fingers frozen to the bone from the cold, ate a couple more of the fudges and headed back to the hotel to dine and swap Nessie tales with the visitors and proprietors. I didn't have to pay for one drink all night long. But I think I got sick from the venison. The "Drum" hotel was warm, close to the loch, had a small cafe and offered pack lunches to take for walks along the shore. And everybody wanted to hear my Nessie story. I would've made headlines world-wide had I been eaten. "Aye, Robin Z, a brave American lass, eaten by Nessie, how tragic. So what's for dinner? Not venison again, I hope." The lore continues.

A free breakfast each morning and having boat tours of Loch Ness originating from right in front of the hotel were also convenient. On the negative side there was no alarm clock to be found in the room, the telephone did not work, the bed was too firm for my liking and the walls were extremely thin which made sleeping difficult at times. Overall I was happy with my experience at Drumnadrochit Hotel.

We were there for over half an hour, and after my parents were given their preliminary order of tea, we essentially became invisible. I might have been more understanding and patient if the restaurant had been busy, but it was a quiet Tuesday evening where not even half the tables were filled and there were numerous waiters and waitresses who didn't seem particularly harried. So we finally got up and left. One of the staff thanked me on my way out and I wanted to say, "For what?" Also, for all the lovely views of the Loch, I couldn't stop my eyes from being drawn to the half-dozen massive flies skittering across the windows. Gross. Disappointed.

They even had Nessie condoms if you believe it. The staff was really kind and efficient. I found these really cute Scottie dog earrings in sterling silver here. They also sell whiskey and lots of it. They had gift sets but won't sell any alcohol before 10 am. I bought a few bottles and a small souvenir gift set of Isle of Islay single malt whiskey. They did not permit photos to be taken inside the gift shop.

We left early for planned events a couple times and they brought breakfast to our room at 6am and wanted to at 3am when we left for the airport. Had a bad day so they gave us a couple flasks of whiskey. The area is historic and beautiful. They warned us that while Uber shows it was there, they are not and they charge, then never show up. The only thing I could say was a little disappointing was no AC so we kept the windows opened as it was cool enough and they advertised a small fridge but they had none. Lastly, we prepaid for breakfast but if you wanted something other than a Scottish breakfast, you had to pay for it like waffles or pancakes. Other than that, a perfect stay.

Yarrow is (I hope I'm spelling correctly) an incredibly helpful and kind host. He made our stay perfect. We unfortunately arrived late but he made us a beautiful charcuterie with a wonderful drink in front of a cozy fire. Our night could not have been better. The next morning Gabriel made our breakfast and coffee experience so delightful. We are so happy we found such an amazing place to stay!

We did not rent a car so relied on the Taxi services around town, which were good but tough to get ahold of in certain tourist areas (e.g. Fort George). One of the main reasons for this is the pool table area. There are 6 pool tables, as well as a dart board, and is the cheapest place in the city centre (well, it's 5 minutes walk from the centre) to play some games with your mates. It has a few screens around the main bar, as well as one main big screen, which is always popular on match day, despite the unfortunate placing of the screen next to the toilets causing some obscurred views. A warning to the green half of the old firm - the Chieftain tends of be dominated by Rangers fans on old firm day. Pies are also offered at half time on big matches. A poker tournament is also played next door, in the Hotel's dinner area, on Sunday nights which brings in more punters.

Nick and Siobhan are two that we dealt with the most. Both were exceptional. Nick made one of our mates a hot toddy so she could sleep without coughing; it made a word of difference. Siobhan lets us know they have a same day laundry service and it worked out well. Better than we could have done on our own. The price was very fair. We were able to use that "free" day to explore Inverness a little more. Room: We had number 10 and it was quaint and spacious. Be aware- it does get warm and with the windows open- you hear the traffic.
