Our front lawn was desperately in need of a makeover due to clover overgrowth and bare spots. We had used Local Roots Landscaping when we purchased our home to install some flower beds and wanted to work with them again since we were so happy with their work. When March came, we knew what we wanted to accomplish, and Matt Huebner was assigned our estimate. Our project consisted of a resodding installation for our front yard, cleaning out and the mulching of our flower beds. Matt didn't even need to visit our property to do the estimate, instead using satellite imagery for our property lines and work areas. Their quote was received promptly and was within our budget, so we approved the estimate and scheduled the work to be completed. We were hoping to have the project done in May but Pittsburgh weather being what it is and a rainy May, things got started on May 26 (Friday). Ben and his crew (For transparency, I'll mention that the work was subcontracted out to another local Landscaper who does most of the general landscaping for Local Roots) arrived around 9am and hoped to finish the job in one day. They worked until early evening and would have completed the job but ran short on mulch. We were fine with that because the sod was installed by the end of the day, so our yard didn't look unsightly over the weekend. The crew returned the following Tuesday to complete some mulching and only needed about an hour to finish. Things looked fantastic and the grass is growing out nicely almost two weeks later. We hired Local Roots Landscaping to design our backyard. They came to our house, had a lovely conversation and explained what we would like done. Roughly 3 weeks later we had a video conference and they reveal our design. During the call they did not give us fencing options to look at and that was the main reason we were redoing our back yard and hired them. All they did was quote us on a vinyl fence, which we clearly stated we did not want, and an aluminum fence. They did give us plant options however we clearly stated we wanted roses, a space for a hot tub to be added later and a space for a fire pit, None of which they took into consideration. As soon as the call was over I received a bill for $1200. My boyfriend and I spent time reviewing the design and overall we were not very happy. It was like they took the existing yard and added a retaining wall. They did not include several items that we asked for and quoted us for something we clearly stated we did not want. Two days later I sent an email to the company stating that my boyfriend and I were not happy with the design. I listed the reasons why and said that we would be moving on from their company. Come Monday morning and I received an email with an overdue bill for $1200 dollars. It was 4 days after the design meeting and now all of the sudden I have an overdue bill??? They did not respond to my email and ask "how can we make this right" or anyway to fix it they just sent an "overdue" bill that I got 4 days earlier. They quoted us over $170,000 for our design, which we were going to pay with a few design changes, and they didn't even ask HOW CAN WE MAKE THIS RIGHT? I do not recommend this company. read more

Do not hire this company. We signed up for regular lawn maintenance and clearly instructed them not to prune our shrubs. Despite this, their crew severely damaged our shrubs by improperly pruning them, causing many plants to yellow and die. The service was consistently incomplete--they neglected cleaning our driveway and patio, leaving behind significant debris and mess. Even worse, after repeated emails and phone calls explaining the damage, they completely ignored us. They stopped showing up altogether without any notice or explanation. Extremely unprofessional, irresponsible, and unreliable. Save your garden and avoid the stress by choosing another company. read more

Local Roots Landscaping is phenomenal. They recently replaced our Versa-lok wall with a Boulder wall. We enjoyed working with Local Roots for our backyard redesign. Their team was very knowledgeable and professional along each phase of the project. There were a lot of unknowns with our project due to hillside and existing retaining walls, but Local Roots quickly adapted to find a solution and make our project a success. There were many moving parts in our project between excavation, multiple types of retaining walls, artificial turf, sandstone steps, and a custom Trex composite deck. Local Roots made sure each team worked together to ensure the project came together even better than we had hoped! They had many team members involved in our project and they were all great to work with. Poor communication between sales and site crew. No communication with the customer. No follow up on quotes for larger projects unless you really push for it. My lawn is the worst on the block and I'm paying more for care than any of the neighbors. Spending a lot of money for a pretty crappy service. Today they showed up, hacked all of the new growth from one lilac bush (so it's not going to flower next spring) and left. They didn't weed anything in the garden be or even trim all the bushes. We've asked them to let us know when (and what) they would be spraying anything. They never tell us anything. read more

we contracted with them in feb 2023 for a swim spa and landscaping. it was delayed getting started two months and was a shit show from the beginning. the details we wanted were not relayed to design team or builders. I felt like the project manager the entire time. the pro was supposed to take 3 weeks and it's been 15 months and they're still not done. once they get your money you are no longer a priority. they built a part of the wall wrong and had to fly off the cuff to figure out a solution. it does not look good. I am the one who has to constantly concede to not getting what we initially discussed. the landscaping had no design. they just threw in whatever, wherever. we had to save for a long time - this was a very expensive project and all they say is "sorry". unacceptable. if my clients (we are biz owners) were experiencing this I would be bending over backwards to make sure it was right and they were satisfied. this was NOT worth the hassle read more

lots of errors on my job, small things, but they were so simple and unnecessary. patrick would listen to what i wanted, talk about it earnestly, make quotes, then no communicate my desires, most of which he'd forgotten, to the crews. i had to continually micromanage the different crews, which was entirely unnecessary, and also made for bad dynamics, because i had to ask to have things redone, because they never got the original message about what i wanted (which was so simple!) also the wall was not built to the specifications on my quote (said, for ex, it'd have rebar: no rebar). they're nice guys, but they have totally lost ability to keep track of details and communicate from customer to crews. the job is fine, only in many ways it wasn't what i wanted. i had to have them back to manage that. this was a splurge for me, so i could get it done how i wanted it. and i didn't quite get that, which was disappointing. since my job, which looks nice!, my neighbors have contacted them and reported more misfires in communications with patrick; they're walking away. i would now too. still, it looks nice! just far too many headaches for such a simple job. read more
