Ok. I have a transmission issue…read more Brought it in to determine the root-cause. They found an old (not cleared) thermostat problem that I fixed a year ago. It didn't totally close, thus not allowing the Cat o get up to temperature quickly enough. I replaced for $25 and 45 minutes, easy. Check-engine light disappeared. But obviously the code locked in. And also they said I needed a full replacement transmission. Which I don't deny may be required. , sorta. I am 71 years old, done professional car work since 17. The ONLY reason I am not doing this myself is age. But that said, before I would tear down anything I would already know what component is bad. A valve, cam sensor, etc. My symptoms are of a valve-body stuck valve, causing the clutch(s) to not fully engage. Thus I wanted a more concise explanation for why I should give them $5,000 - $6,000 to replace the entire Xmission. I really should have had a talk with the trained mechanic that could go into depth about the detailed reason it is giving me problems. But I got the worker at the register explaining the estimate to me. I have 100% confidence she has ZERO true mechanical knowledge/training past what to say. She should have called the Tech to talk to me. Had that happened I would have set an appointment to have it replaced. Without hesitation, I called. Initially, I was not impressed with the phone conversation as the guy on the other end didn't pick up with an "Auto Express, how may I help you?" , but rather picked up and said "Hello" as if to welcome the dead silence that followed. After clarifying with the guy on the phone that I had called the right place and asking if they sold tires (thinking for sure I would have to buy a full set or something) he said "Yeah, bring it in. The sooner the better." I was off put that they guy didnt ask for any information about my car or situation. Fast forward, I pull up to the shop. I don't see any tire selection in the store front or a street facing garage (must be in the back). I came in and asked for the guy who I talked to on the phone. Saying nothing, the guy instead just asked for my key. Hesitating, I held the keys in my hand, dangling them a bit, and said "don't you want to look at it first? I didn't even tell you what kind of car.." The guy cut me off, barking "do you want me to look at it, or do you want me to fix it!?". I submitted to him that I wanted him to fix it and surrendered my key... tire fixed in like 15min, no line, no wait, no charge. In summary, this place is a great place to take your car. Just expect that the people running the place are a little socially awkward and/or lacking in social skill. Overall solid job.

Their style is more casual than corporate and that is great for some people and makes others nervous if that's what you're used to, but they're all about fixing anything that is a true mechanical issue or safety hazard, but won't ever push you on anything cosmetic or non-essential, which is great if you're not a millionaire with a car budget to match! They're all much more into doing than talking at this shop, so if I had to give constructive criticism I'd say communicating more about the car's issues/options would make people feel better, but if you have to choose between a mechanic that will talk to you or one who will just fix what's wrong at a very fair/low price, I'll take the latter every single day. :)
