The greeter, waitress and table runner were welcoming and prompt during the weekday lunch service. The chips and salsa were fine; neither part wowed. But my El Tapatío plate was a good merging of chicken, chorizo, and pineapple. The rice and guacamole salad played their supporting roles well. Ordering from the lunch menu provided a nice value. With this place being close to work, it just may have earned itself a happy hour visit.

Me and my wife were born in San Antonio, so it's safe to say we know what good Mexican food is about. Need to start with how clean this place is. Huge points in my book for a facility having a clean environment. The server (Stephanie) was awesome, very nice, very sociable, quick to take care of the patrons. The salsa was very delicious, chips were good as well. The guac dip is something that restaurants don't seem to get sometimes, this is some good old school recipe guac dip here. I'm a sucker for fish tacos, whether it's tilapia, or cod, or even shrimp. These fish tacos were spot on, fair amount of fish, tortillas were very good, and the sauce was off to the side as I like. Love the crunch that the fried tilapia had to it, no complaints. My wife enjoyed the Tacos de Birria, and this is sometimes where people fail, with over cooking the beef. Not these, the beef was very tender, I had to sneak a piece of my wife's taco. The beans were great, the rice was great, just like back home. No question in my mind, I will bring my folks here when they come up to visit. My mom is originally from Monterrey, Mexico, and I know she would enjoy this spot. If your craving some authentic Mexican food, definitely make this a family night and enjoy the good. You can tell there is passion that goes into this food, and no doubt, we'll be coming back for more.

Our server, who I think was the manager, seated us quickly and was super friendly and attentive throughout the meal. There is a long bar in one room where a couple locals were dining while watching a game. They also have a back room for larger parties and an outdoor patio. We ordered the beef enchilada, chile relleno combo, and also the chimichanga dinner. Both were very well prepared, and the sauces were definitely not store bought. We asked the manager and he did say that they make their sauces in house. I love that, especially since they were really good and had a deeper spice flavor than other places.

It was a Thursday night at dinnertime, but we were seated right away. They had a decent-sized crowd, but it wasn't packed. We had a server visit our table quickly and he was very friendly and light-hearted. He was good with the kids and we always appreciate that! It was a bit after 6pm, but I was able to get a Happy Hour margarita ordered, which felt like a good deal! $7.99 for a traditional margarita. (I'm not sure what time their Happy Hour ends) There wasn't much salt on the rim, but I actually didn't notice until I nearly finished it and realized it wasn't there. But it tasted great! I believe it was an authentic margarita, not the sour mix. My kids love Mexican rice and beans (respectively, neither likes both), so they only each ordered their side and feasted on chips and queso (the queso was a bit pricey for a large, but it lasted our entire meal). The queso was great and the chips were good too. Salsa was decent. I ordered the spinach enchiladas and my wife ordered the vegetarian chimichanga. We both enjoyed our meals and agreed we ordered those same meals again in the future. Service was fast and friendly and we had a nice relaxing meal. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the indoors is even nicer than it looks from the outside, although they have a nice outdoor patio with some cool decor out there as well. We'll come back!

So far since my big move here last year, El Vaquero is my 2nd restaurant for Mexican food that I've visited. Well, my 3rd really if you count "The Local Cantina", but I really don't count that place just due to how absurd their menu is. I brought my wife to EV for lunch, and this place was very clean, which is a great plus in my book. The young lady that waited on us (Erendira), was very friendly, very quick to get us some chips and salsa, very quick to get us our drinks as well. Very good service, no question at all. The first thing I always think about when ordering Mexican food, is always my memories of back home in San Antonio. When the plates came out, I really had that sense of home. The enchilada's my wife ordered were spot on, the rice was so authentic, yet so simple. A lot of places try and spruce up spanish rice with corn and just simply call it "Tex-Mex". Not the case here, very good. The frijoles were also good, don't miss out. I ordered the flauta lunch plate, and it really hit the spot, not overly portioned, but just the right amount of food. They have a happy hour with lunch through 2p, so drop in and enjoy the discounted plates.
