If you're a microbrew enthusiast and on the search while in Paris, you have to visit Le Super Coin…read more Intimate bar and worth the trip. The bar tender knows his stuff. If you don't speak French, no worries he's fluent enough to help you pick a beer that you like and he even gives good local restaurant advice. Happy and hoppy after several weeks cross Europe, Dubai and Israel, this bar hits the spot. Cheers! Oh yes, It's at few blocks off the foot of Basilique du Sacré Cœur. If you're there at night (or day) it's worth the walk up the steps to burn off the brew for an awesome panoramic view of Paris.

Le Supercoin est l'oasis de biere artisanale en Paris! (Pardon, ce clavier americain ici n'a pas…read moredes accents). Haha, mais je ne parle pas francais, vraiment. En Anglais: "As good as it gets!" is literally true, in this case! When I visited Paris in mid-April, I was impressed with the pervasiveness of the wine culture - that is, ALL IS WINE. Had I been there with a willing accompaniment, and for more than two nights, I would have certainly dug in with a vengeance. From the looks of the labels (and I have experience judging wine by the label, since I work in a wine shop), plenty of delicious wine can be had for 4-5 euros a bottle. But I was not there to learn what everybody knows! I was there to find the craft beer...and unless I was lied to, Le Supercoin is approximately the THIRD craft beer bar in the whole city. And it had just opened two weeks before! So 5 stars is requisite. Digging deeper...by American standards, the tap selection (3) is small. But these taps produce high-quality, interesting French beer. And the bottle selection is fairly diverse and interesting. I had La Franche Galle (good witbier) and Agent Provocateur Blonde Artisanal (good Belgian-style blonde) on tap, and Brasserie du Mont Saleve Sorachi Ace Bitter (2.5% alc, nominally malted and lusciously single-hopped with Sorachi Ace hops) and Agent Provocateur Cuvee d'Oscar (some kind of vintage ale: intense cherry/plum/fig dried fruit notes morphing into a surprisingly dry wheat-y finish). Those bottled beers were a) marvelous and b) quite distinct from anything I've had in America/Britain. But that's secondary; what matters is Le Supercoin is at the very forefront of Parisian craft beer, working in a MUCH less beer-appreciation-conditioned environment than ours. The environment is casual. The young woman working behind the bar was jovial and spoke pretty good English, which combined with my awful French (I've had plenty of school credits; I should be better) was a lot of fun. Craft beer and jolliness seem to go hand in hand, you know? Biere artisanale, une langue universel! Ah, important note: Le Supercoin was recommended to me by Simon, the owner of La Cave a Bulles http://www.yelp.com/biz/la-cave-à-bulles-paris-2. Much thanks for that!

This craft beer store is a welcome find just outside of Paris (an easy 5 min walk from La Défense)…read more It stocks Belgian and French beers, with around 300 varieties. Belgian beer making up the vast majority (and rightly so). It also proposes variety packs of beers, based on a theme. My favourite is the 'world champions' which is a selection of the winners of the World Beer Awards. Great customer service (including English) and clear labelling system throughout the store which indicates beer type, strength, flavour etc. It has a refund policy for glass bottles and plastic crates, to encourage recycling. Basically you get a small refund when you return your empties, and the bottles and crates get reused (starting at €0.10 for a small bottle). This also saves you a little - think of all those other glass bottles that you are paying for, but not getting any money back when you put them in the recycle bin.

This bottle shop turned casual tasting bar is a welcome sign to beer fans in the surrounding towns of the western Parisian suburbs. People outside Paris like good beer!!?! They have a terrific selection of the beers from the region's best brewers. They also have just about all the traditional Belgian beers you could want - with some Germans thrown in there for sport - and all this at a great price thanks to the fact that they recover the bottles to get back the deposit. They also have a selection of chips and cold cuts/cheese to enjoy with any bottles you decide to taste "sur place". They even have a couple solid beers (one local and one Belgian last time I went) on tap for 4 euros the half pint. There are tables inside and outside and chilled brews waiting to be tasted. The owner is great, quite friendly, and delivers quick and professional service. He clearly knows his product. Go get your beer geek on and bring a bag for the six pack you will undoubted take home. I'm going back soon to restock my fridge. I'll taste before I buy of course (and take the bus home). :D
