He had indicated I might need a full shoulder replacement and then referred me to PT. For two months I have been at a pain level of 9+ and have not had any sleep. I finally had to demand MRI imaging because the pain was so excessive I needed to find out what was really going on. His office also totally messed up the request for the MRIs and I had to go twice. Another delay and more pain. I knew I needed a second opinion and was referred to Dr. Skyhar by two friends, and I have to say was one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. He is one of the most caring and intelligent doctors I have ever spent time with. He reviewed the MRIs slide by slide and explained in detail what each slide was showing. He determined that I did not need to have any kind of surgery and that my pain that I was experiencing was neurological in nature. He even explained the MRI report by the radiologist that to be honest was not written correctly. He is a wonderful doctor. He always takes the time to thoroughly understand what's going on, to get to the root of what's causing your symptoms, and to educate you appropriately. His style of communication is warm and friendly, and he has a great sense of humor as well. I also really appreciate that he doesn't just push pills or unnecessary procedures on you, an increasingly common issue with some doctors who are looking to make a larger profit, but instead makes sure that a treatment really is in your best interests and won't cause unnecessary harm for a minimal (or no) improvement. The kicker is that Barmettler's pride is hurt and he is offended that my sister asked about the COPD when she returned to the dr's office with my father after his two month stay in the ICU, acute care hospital and rehab. Aetna pays NCFMG over $500/visit and each visit I paid my PCP copay of $20. Yet the billing went through as if I saw a specialist ($45 copay) and I only saw a PA, plus North Coast doesn't have specialist they only do Primary Care. This was all because the doctors were listed incorrectly on the bill sent to Aetna. So I called Kara a few times, and I called Aetna a few times and then I put them on a conference call together, and then I followed up with Aetna several times to make sure they were fixing the issue. So after about 4 hours of my time and Kara blaming Aenta and Aetna blaming her I had to give up. And I had a final call with Kara and said there is no way I am paying the $50 because this was billed wrong, just on principal I can't and won't pay it. I can't believe I am ending a 10 year relationship with NCFMG who gets paid $500+ every time I visit over $50 I was wrongly charged for, that is brilliant customer service and a fantastic business model. Note for NCFMG if you even read these reviews: PA Noel and PA Morrison are setup incorrectly with Aetna. They had 2 profiles, one with UCSD and one without. Aetna billing uses the one without which makes them unrecognized so they bill as a specialist. So why don't you call Aetna and fix it before you have more patients leave you over erroneous billing.

In the past it would take me months to see my PCP. This was a big improvement. Everything, from lab work requests to accessing clinical notes and instructions is automated in their system, so there's no hassle. On the day of my appointment, I was pleased to find plenty of parking, even on a busy weekday afternoon, which is always a plus. The clinic looks amazing and they've clearly made major renovations. The space is bright, modern, open, and spotless, with an inviting atmosphere. The staff were professional, warm, and attentive. He is a corporate sellout who works for workers comp companies like Concentra, so that should tell you a little something about his integrity. I saw William Holland 10 years ago before Concentra bought out US HealthWorks in Marietta, CA. I crushed my index finger on my right hand while working at the City of Temecula. It was so badly crushed that the skin burst, breaking open an artery that supplied blood to my finger and requiring several sutures across the pad. Concentra assigned William Holland to be my orthopedic specialist after a couple of weeks of therapy. I showed Dr Holland that my finger had lost much of its functionality and explained to him that it was my trigger finger and that I enjoyed shooting being a retired law enforcement officer. The tendon that ran across the top middle knuckle would get stuck and jump. Additionally, I showed him that I was unable to make a monkey grip with that finger, which would totally mess up my ability to shoot accurately. Dr Holland told me that my finger would heal and that soon I would be able to have my monkey grip back. He wrote me off as 100% with no disability even though I had a major disability when I saw him. It has been 10 years, and I still only have about 50% use of the finger when it comes to grip. I can only get about halfway to touching the pad of my hand. Dr Holland lied to me! I believe it is because he has invested interest in keeping the contract for concentra/us HealthWorks who he works for. He knows if he saves money for the cities and large businesses, they will keep the same work comp company, and he will continue to be employed by them. If you have to see Dr Holland because you were assigned him for your workers comp case, be careful not to let him deceive or mislead you like you did to me. He comes off convincing, but if I were you, I would definitely find a different doctor on the list of providers and get another opinion when he tries to downplay your injuries! I learned the hard way!

I came to this clinic with MRI-confirmed disc injuries, including annular fissures and mild canal narrowing at C5-C7, along with persistent cervical pain that had not responded to conservative care. I had completed physical therapy, chiropractic treatment, massage, and multiple rounds of medication. Early in my treatment, a cervical epidural steroid injection (CESI) was presented as a next step if symptoms continued. I followed through with everything recommended. When my symptoms persisted, I expressed that I was ready to move forward with the CESI and made it clear that cost would not be a barrier--I was willing to pay cash. Despite this, the CESI was then walked back with shifting justifications: first citing cost, then later saying the disc bulges were "too small," even though the imaging findings had been available for weeks and hadn't changed. There has been no new information medically--only a changing explanation that doesn't align with the original plan of care. As a patient, this experience has been frustrating. If the provider or clinic is simply uncomfortable with performing the procedure, that should be communicated clearly and early--not repositioned after the patient agrees to proceed. I'm seeking a second opinion elsewhere and hope this review encourages a more transparent and consistent approach for future patients.
