Mortgage rates dropped significantly due to the pandemic - so when my broker reached out to me to see if I was interested in refinancing, I figured it was worth at least taking a look to see if it was worth it. Like my original mortgage, I went with Austin Stellato at Thoroughbred Mortgage. Austin was great - he was always available to answer my questions, was prompt to answer emails, and was great at keeping the entire process moving along. Refinancing during COVID-19 presented extra challenges - most people involved were working from home which made some processes a little tougher (especially in cases where my wet ink signature was required). Also, there were extra verification steps due to the uncertainty of the pandemic. Despite these challenges and the new way of working that we are all getting used to, the process was very smooth - and in the end I got a better rate. I would have no qualms recommending Austin and his team for a first-time mortgage or a refinance - they were nothing but professional throughout the entire process.

The loan officer there, who was leaving to work at The First Bank of Greenwich, convinced me to apply with them instead. He promised to personally introduce me to the bank manager and a VP, which he did. At The First Bank of Greenwich, the VP required me to deposit $100K into an account in order to receive a $100K "secured" loan. Both the VP and the manager assured me that, within two weeks, this would be converted into a standard loan. That turned out to be a complete lie. Instead, they held onto my $100K for two months, during which I had no access to it, and ultimately informed me that they would not be approving any loan. When I decided to walk away and asked for my money back (I returned their $100K check, which I had never deposited elsewhere), they had the audacity to charge me $500 just to withdraw my own funds. In other words: they took $100K of my money, used it for two months, refused me the loan they promised, and then charged me $500 on the way out. I do not trust this bank and will never do business with them again.
