It is a fairly spacious branch but a lot of that space just seems to be empty space - it isn't too nice or modern and it just isn't utilised well. Good staffing levels but the staff didn't seem too friendly or eager to help. They had one of the larger selections of banking machines / ATM's compared to other nearby banks which I liked. The branch opening hours are slightly confusing but they remain pretty much average, including better than many banks nearby including Lloyds - On most days they open at 9 and close at 6 including on Saturday with the only difference being that they close at 5 pm on Thursday's and Saturday's, and open half an hour later on Tuesday's. In terms of ATM levels and opening hours one of the best banks in the city, in terms of overall feel it is lacking to my favourite banks in Sheffield which include nearby Halifax, Natwest and Virgin Money stores, despite being the fourth best in overall feel, it is amongst the best in other factors so is pretty much A-OK. 3*

It's fully equipped with all the latest fancy paying in machines which sometimes have a queue, but the front of house staff are always working hard to help people out and keep the queues moving. The financial teams are also wonderful if you ever have a query or want to change something to do with your account and there really is no hard-sell. Keep it up HSBC!

I use the business banking in HSBC Retford which I've found to be far more competent than in other…read morebranches I've dealt with in the past. The branch itself is located slap-bang in the middle of the high street (Carolgate) so there's no immediate parking as it's pedestrianised. They've got self-service facilities and service counters, and it's a fairly busy branch. It's an old building which has retained a little of its original character, but with the features you'd expect of a modern bank. My opinion of HSBC as a company on the whole is very very very poor, but this branch is about as good as it gets for them.

Santander on Fargate is located in Sheffield city centre, with so many other rival banks nearby…read morewith nearly every major banking chain in the UK has a branch within a five-minute walk of this branch. The store is pretty average, it's spacious with a larger seating area than most banks which I liked, a great place perhaps to sit down while shopping or passing through the city to relax for a few minutes or do some online banking, if you're a Santander customer like me. I liked how they had their targets on digital screens compared to paper which most other branches of Santander or any other bank for that matter seem to use, it made the whole thing stand out more, and seem more modern. They didn't have any coin processing facilities at the ATM machines, so you'd have to queue up for that, I would have liked more staff on the floor to offer assistance without the need to queue, as the store felt understaffed without it. The bank is nice, with some modern features however and pretty spacious. 3*

The opening hours are average, 9-5 during the week, but closing at 1 pm on Saturday, the latter is pretty annoying. Customer service could be slightly better, compared to other stores where I feel the staff are friendlier, but this location isn't a bad alternative while in Meadowhall. 3*

An impressive branch by Halifax standards, in Sheffield centre, this branch really surprised me as…read moreit is totally different from what one would normally expect from a Halifax store, I find Halifax branches to be a little basic, a wooden floor and not too much in the way of being comfortable or technology but that's where this branch differed. The branch seemed a lot more open and welcoming, they had a nice amount of banking machines and even one of the most comfortable seating areas I've ever seen in a bank other than B Works in Manchester, with blue sofas! The silver colour flour and a carpet/rug in the seating area, made everything seem considerably more modern and comfortable too. From the outside, the branch stood out too with the large Halifax sign and promotional writing "Giving you extra" in the window. The welcome and help from the staff could be improved, however, and again making this branch more digital, to match the modern features and feel of the branch would also be a cool idea to look at for the future. Impressive for a Halifax store but for a bank in general bang average - 3*

The other staff try to get people to use the machines for most queries. There are plently of staff about and do seem friendly enough. If its just a question i would ask at the reception rather then queue up first. Its light and modern interior and is clearly laid out with a large reception desk just in front of the doors. Its a shame there isn't more branches as the banks ofers good deals. The internet banking is great and would try to use this rather then going into the branch itself.
