Surprisingly large, they pack a lot in. The basics are pretty reasonably priced and there are some good specials.

Presumably because its only us gwei lo's who think that how a place looks and whether you can actually fit two people in an aisle is at all important. Compare the way the produce is stored and handled at other places and Jarern Chai looks a cut above - even if the stuff is exactly the same and just as cheap. Pontip still wins on overall variety and hard to get stuff but this place smacks it into the bleachers for presentation and stuff thats important to dumb white people even if it shouldn't be.

I was in a frantic rush to get to my daughter's school musical and had grabbed a gorgeous bunch of roses with coloured baby's breath. The flowers had been sitting in a jar of water and the bottom half was unwrapped -- and this mattered, because we were giving them to one of the leads in the show who wouldn't finish performing until 9pm. It was only 5:45pm, so the flowers needed to stay hydrated for over three hours before they'd even be received. The in-store florist had already finished for the day and I had no idea what to do. Zeron, who was near the cashiers, came straight outside to help. He grabbed a freezer bag from the fruit section, added water, wrapped the stems in tissue paper, secured it all with a rubber band, then finished the whole thing beautifully with florist paper and a decorative tie. It was creative, practical and looked wonderful. He was calm, quick and genuinely kind the whole time. We made it to the show on time and the flowers were still perfectly fresh when presented after the performance. Zeron is exactly the kind of person who makes a local shop feel like community.

Nortons has a great selection of olives (my picks: the manchego stuffed, anchovy stuffed, Sicilian and chilli stuffed) and cheeses, plus I'm sure they've got a good range of deli meats as well - I should say that as a non-meateater I didn't really pay this much attention. Aside from the antipasto ingredients, Nortons has fantastic selection of fresh fruit and vegetables, which is fantastic when the Coles upstairs disappoints. Not only is everything stacked and presented immaculately, but the grocers are more than willing to help you choose the right produce, selecting the one that's just ripe enough for whenever you may need it. They have a great selection of fresh and dry pastas, passatas and various other Italian ingredients, and come Christmas and Easter times their shelves are loaded with dozens of panettone varieties - my boyfriend's Italian mum (not a Sydney-sider) has us source on from Nortons every holidays.
